I had a quote for over £2000 a few weeks back

No claims for the past ten years.

Last year it was £989.

Someone recommended Liverpool Victoria (lv.com) and I had a quote in for less than last year’s price.

Just did mine yesterday, last year was £400 quoted £766, compared the market, changed providers and I'm paying £400.

I've no idea why these companies think they can nearly double your price and expect to keep you as a customer.

Another thing that makes me question what they are playing at is over the last 4-5 years I've just switched every year between Aviva and AXA and my premium has hardly changed but every year a renewal quote is massive

I was with More Than, which is part of Royal Sun Alliance, one of the largest insurers in the world.

More Than have pulled out of UK car insurance so with my permission they passed my details on to Swinton, a broker who are also part of the Royal Sun Alliance group.

Swinton offered me a renewal quote at the end of December of £985 for a policy with Ageas, an increase of 70% on last year.

I shopped around and got a policy with Ageas for £450. I’m not sure why there’s such a difference in the price for a policy with the same insurer but I’m not complaining!

I'm not condoning price increases, but there are many reasons why insurers increase their prices. The common 'excuse' is currently that the cost of parts and labour is increasing repair costs. However insurers also regularly change their views of who their 'target' customer base is so may increase renewal costs disproportionately for customers who no longer fit within their preferred criteria in a hope they'll shop elsewhere.

Don't forget also that many insurers offer a discount when you move to them, so renewal in the next year may well see another hike in costs.

Insurers are not supposed to treat existing customers 'worse' than new customers so it's worth taking them to task if you see the same policy for a cheaper price on a comparison site. Also consider reporting them to the FCA if you think they're not following the rules!

It’s always been like that. I worked in car insurance almost 40 years ago and anyone living in an inner city area paid much more than someone living in the suburbs, even then.

Love everyone’s really cheap prices. I doubt I’ll ever get it tha cheap always been over a grand since I passed. But I do 12000 miles a year. I use my car a lot. So because I do school runs etc. they class me as higher risk as I’m in peak traffic. Madness really. I e never claimed on my insurance. I got rear ended. But again wasn’t my fault. But that made my insurance go up which isn’t fair. Renewal wanted 1800 I got it down to 1300 else where. Luckily my ex partner pays for mine. In space for child maintenance. But I still try and save him money.

I actually checked and it didn’t make a lot of difference, couple of years ago I was offered a job that involved delivering food, so enquirered about changing my insurance term to suit and to my surprise the quote was actually cheaper, also changed my car couple years ago old one was 1.9 non turbo diesel the replacement was 2.0 Litre hdi turbo so quite a difference in performance both cars looked exactly the same only visible difference was the 1.9 had a sun roof, both same age the 2.0hdi was cheaper to insure tho, motor insurance is just a massive con
