I work for my local council and almost all my overtime comes from housing (not my dept day to day) and we do a lot of house and garden clearances, I was at one today in fact.

We often have to take a tipper van to get rid of the shit we find inside and in the garden. If it'll fit in a garden, finding it wouldn't surprise me. From household goods to dead animals (last one was an xl bully puppy, 4/5 months old, no chip (we take chip scanners, yes we find that many dead pets) there often tends to be just general waste though so grown in we have to litter pick, then strim, then litter pick everything that the strimming exposes then mow for a half ok looking finish. We don't strim if there's dog shit though which is very often

There is ALWAYS a half deflated football though and at least one shoe or trainer, oh and a piece of old washing line hiding in the grass that will whip up around our strimmer and jam it!

A concrete lintel extending as a rudimentary porch over the front doorway.

Surest sign of a council house. Difficult to remove or disguise under the 'Right to buy'. Origin betrayed on behalf of social climbers turning their backs on their humble roots.

Mines got a nice English cottage style garden I planted full of peonies and roses, and a storage unit I built by hand for the bins.

Nicer than the houses down the road that weren’t built for council tenants tbh.

Hoarding and people with far too many pets isn't only by those who live in council owned property..

Seen it in all types of property..

Yes, but the question was about council houses

The issues that lead to such behaviours are across all strata of society, poor mental health being one of the main factors so yes the thread is about council properties but threads do expand as people contribute..

Yes, we know this, but the question was about council houses, I answered with stuff I've found specifically in council houses. What answers would you have preferred people to give?

Perhaps start a thread on things found in the gardens of homes across all strata of society if you'd prefer that conversation?

Mate, all threads expand indeed you did the same in adding your input so saying start another thread on common issues that do affect some council houses but not all is a bit bizarre..

I'm not your mate.

So i expanded a thread asking what might be found in a council house garden by listing stuff I've found in council house gardens? I took that to the raggedy edge eh! couldn't have gone much further without it just being an entirely different subject

Fucks sake, relax..

No one's accused you of taking anything to the raggedy edge whatever that is..

All that's been pointed out to you is that threads expand as they've always done, that your ignoring that and telling others to start separate threads is as I said a bit bizarre..

Ok, threads expand. Cool. "

"I work for my local council and almost all my overtime comes from housing (not my dept day to day) and we do a lot of house and garden clearances, I was at one today in fact.

Thought it was just me that’s offended by this thread and “no”, I don’t have a sense of humour bypass; thankfully it’s not just me!

What you’ll find in front of and behind the council house garden are the vast majority of people doing their very best to survive, raise children and go about their business with pride.

Personally, I was raised proudly in a council flat with no green, just the concrete jungle to play in, before Mum finally got to the top of a long waiting list for the house with a garden and guess what, all our neighbours were exactly the same!

Yes, you’re going to get those who have zero pride and dump whatever shit they like in the garden. But don’t judge that book by its cover; you’ll do so at your own peril!

As you were!

We need more council housing. Lots of it. The housing situation is an absolute disgrace in this country. I grew up in a council house. They were built to last unlike the new build housing built today that people are paying fortunes for. Looks like the government has found a solution though. Conscription, get a million or so killed fighting for king and a country that doesn't give a shit about them.

Yep just scanned this thread and surprised. My sister is still in a council house and has a lovely front garden. She also has three girls who grew up there, all went to university and two of which now own their own house in their 20s. The stereotyping and looking down on people is shocking. Not a sexy look.

I was once out with a local Councillor who was commenting on the state of the gardens in one street and asking what could be done about it. I pointed out that the majority no longer belonged to the Council and that there was no obligation upon the owners to do anything about the upkeep of their gardens. Nowadays many of the properties bought from the Council have simply become privately rented properties. They are of course rented out for higher rents than their Council neighbours and if the tenants claim Housing Benefit at a greater cost to you and me. In Scotland the sale of Council housing was ended years ago. I simply don't understand why it isn't done in England as well

That’s the case with my home. The council tenants bought it and rented it out, and when it wasn’t profitable me they sold it to me. I don’t mind, it’s a solid house and a great community! Kids play in the street round here and the neighbors (most of them still council tenants) are quick to lend a hand with anything that needs doing. Wonderful place to live. Big garden too, because they were built in the 30s when council tenants were provided enough garden to grow their own food - which many people in my street still do!

I'm glad you like your home it's just a shame you're likely paying higher rent than your neighbours.

I worked in social housing and homelessness for thirty years. When I started you could get a Council House within a couple of weeks albeit perhaps not in the area of your choice. There was almost no rough sleepers. By the time I retired those assessed as homeless with a statutory duty to be housed were waiting over a year for a house probably not in their area of choice. Rough sleepers are sadly everywhere. The decimation of Social Housing is a very sad affair and costs us all a great deal

"I'm gobsmacked by this thread/comments. And I thought I had a sense of humour, maybe I really don't.

"

Many of the comments in this thread have been made in jest including probably by some laughing at their own existence.

The writer Anthony Powell, famously made a comment that we are losing the basic human right to make fun of other people, whoever they are.

Let us not lose it on the Fab forum.

So why bother then. I live in a Council house and I can guarantee its better kept than some privately owned homes.

We're not all deadbeat!!

Some people should check out their own photos of the homes here before judging others.

Yes, still it's good to know that nobody here would want to meet me as I live in a council house.

"Great thread to see some people for who they really are. "

Absolutely. There are some completely humourless buggers about. Knowing them must be like walking on eggshells for fear they'll get offended, either for themselves or on somebody else's behalf.

Did you just stereotype people who spout stereotypes as being thick. You're absolutely correct.

We need a thread asking how tidy your garden is? …

"

Front garden very tidy, back garden, 4 broken fence panels are making it look messy.

I think that would be a general theme across council, rented and owned though.

That sounds accurate for me and my neighbours as our HA is notoriously slow at fixing communal boundary fencing. No front gardens here.
