About 3 feet away from the fence

How you found them in the shop when you bought them is an indication of how you store them

Eggs can just go on the side

I think it depends which country you are in and whether they have been washed? If washed (usa), they go in the fridge... If not washed (uk), they go on the side

Fridge, they keep longer never had a dodgy one even after many weeks.

It's a bit like "use by" dates, these are to get you to dispose of perfectly good food items so you have to buy more!

Just bull$hit to keep the money rolling in.

And yes as it happens I do have food and hygiene certification, for catering.

Have my chickens & leave the eggs I get from them on the side - in between the toaster & tea bag pot to be precise!

I love eggs & they never hang around for more than a week, so don't need to consider the fridge

anything in the fridge remains fresher longer and at the same temperature reducing risk of bacteria.......tomato ketchup and alike, jars of stuffand alike isnt in a fridge in the supermarket but says on label store in fridge

common sense tells me fridge , thats why fridges have egg racks inside

The main thing is to maintain a constant temperature, if you can achieve this outside the fridge that’s fine, if you can’t then pop ‘m in the fridge, they don’t need to be fridge cold but it’s an easy way of maintaining a constant temperature.

Mine go in the pantry, it’s a regular temp in there and fairly cool.

In the cupboard. You don't need to store UK eggs in the fridge.

In America you need to keep them in fridge because they strip the protective layer off them.

Fun fact.

You can tell how fresh eggs are or if they're off by putting them in a glass of water. If they lay flat on the bottom of the glass then they're fresh, if they stand up right they're still good but not as fresh. If they float then only eat them if you want to talk to god on the porcelain telephone.

In America the eggs are washed and this removes the natural layer of protection, where as over here, we just leave well alone and the natural layers provide a really good level of protection. That's why you will not see eggs in fridges in the shops.

a lack of space and the default setting of egg trays coming with most fridges, has led to this way of thinking.

A similar thing happens to root veg/tubers. Spuds, carrots and the like will keep fresher for longer if they do NOT have their muddy layer rinsed off. This pre washing will shorten their shelf life.

Save the water, just spin the eggs on a work top and tap it still: if the egg moves again, due a liquid centre, then it's fresh/not cooked.

"Do they go in the fridge or on the side for storage?

Look at how they are stored on shops...

No need to put them in the fridge at all.

If you're unsure if an egg is fresh enough to eat just pop into a bowl etc of water.

If it sinks its fine.

If it floats, its degrading and producing nitrogen gas inside the shell and should be disposed of.

In the US, commercial eggs are washed before packaging, which in addition to removing any dirt or debris, removes the protective film that is deposited on the shell during the laying process and should be refrigerated .

If you buy eggs at a market that are kept on a shelf and they’re not washed, they should be safe at cool room temperature because the film on the shell keeps them safe. Bacteria cannot get thru the protective film.

Eggshells are porous, so if you put them in the fridge the eggs will taste of the fridge air

"I put them in the fridge. Otherwise the poor fridge egg holder would have no purpose in life."

You're not supposed to put eggs on the egg holder inside the fridge door, instead you should put them in the shelf of the fridge! Otherwise leave eggs out of the fridge!

Seems to me that outside the US the industry have realised that distribution and storage is simpler and cheaper without involving refrigeration. Once they are sold the problem is transferred to the consumer anyway.

I never crack any egg without first checking that they don't float in water. I recently did this with six which had been around in the fridge for several weeks. None floated and I dried three on the drainer and put them back in the fridge and scrambled the other three.

As I don't have a fast turnover of eggs purchased, I will continue to refrigerate them. The practice obviously doesn't kill Americans.
