Get off the phone an hour before desired bedtime. That's my best tip.

I like white noise and relaxing sleepy chillout music to stop the thoughts wandering too.

If my brain is determined to have an insomnia night then it's the music earworm on repeat. I try to beat it with yoga meditation tricks but they don't work on a no sleep night. It's Mykonos by Fleet Foxes all night. Good job I love that song but even it tries my patience.

I've always suffered from this..

Taking Zinc and magnesium really helps.. As does keeping your window slightly open during the day so that your bedroom is cool and you can get cosy under your bedding.

Obviously plenty of fresh air and exercise are brilliant too.

"Go for a evening walk. "

Anxiety, worry and stress can affect how well we sleep. Luckily, there are things you can do daily to help manage your worries, like talking to someone you trust or writing in a notebook about your concerns.

If you often lie awake worrying, set aside time before bed to make a to-do list for the next day – this can be a good way to put your mind at rest.

Using techniques like reframing unhelpful thoughts might also help, which we cover in our self-help CBT techniques section along with other tips.

I had issues until I figured a few things out about good sleep:

If you use your bedroom all day long, your body will not be able to associate it with a sleeping space, but a waking space, and will not fall asleep easily.

ESPECIALLY if you sit on your bed with your laptop all day long or watch tellie, read books or wahtever you want to do on it. If you spend a lot of time on your bed during the day, your brain won't associate it as your sleeping spot.

That's the biggest issue why people can't sleep well!

Second biggest issue is, that people don't go to bed at regular times. If you don't, your body doesn't know that it's time yet for getting sleepy. It will take A LOT longer until you finally fall asleep.

Other minor issues, that keep you from sleeping are: Maybe the bed is too warm after a while, cheap mattresses and pillows tend to be very warm, so you toss and turn to not overheat over night. And this can absolutely happen in winter, too!

The opposite, too cold, is a factor, too. Especially if you have cold feet/knees you won't be comfortable to sleep and it takes you longer to fall asleep. This used to keep me a awake soooo many nights when I was out in the bush. Seriously warm everyhwere else, but my knees/feet. Once I started with hot flasks, the issue was gone and I got surprisingly good sleeps!

Another disruptor are screens: Blue light keeps you awake, hence why you shouldn't look at screens 2 hours before bedtime. Read a book, or have sex.

I live on a boat, very tiny space. I work on my laptop all day because, well, I like money and not starving to death.

Anyway. If I spend my day in bed with my laptop, I tend to sleep so very bad. Often very long, and then still feel groggy all day next day. But if I hunker down in the saloon with my laptop and go to bed at night, I sleep very quickly and very deeply.

Close your eyes, imagine each of your fingers being asleep, and each of your toes. Once they are asleep and can no longer move, the feeling of sleep spreads to your feet and hands, up your legs and arms until your body is asleep and can no longer move as it drifts of to sleep

It's a technique taught by the U S military

Give it a go

Actually no. The military technique is to tense your muscles and then purposely relax them and do that limb for limb until you fall asleep. Me personally I can't do that but the tensing and then relaxing is the key to this technique

I find that without external stimulation my brain wakes up to fill the gap - so if I'm getting tired and on the verge of sleep, and turn the light/TV off, suddenly my brain stops being sleepy. I often find myself falling asleep with the light and television on because they are tiring my brain out and allowing it to relax. By the same token, I struggle to listen to audiobooks because they send me to sleep.

Here's a totally random thing that has occasionally worked for me in the past, although I've no idea why - switch around in bed so your pillow is where your feet normally are.

Omg i love a good serial killer! Doesn't help me to sleep though!

Why? Have a good dream about all the murders…. It works brilliantly for me

Because my brain is stimulated

That’s not your brain darling

Have a (ladywank) first… obvs

Much as I love this advice, there have been times when I've hit the fourth orgasm and still not been able to sleep. If anything, I'm more awake

I used to suffer from a form of insomnia called Chronic Slow Sleep. It was debilitating. None of the usual sleep remedies worked, so Ailsa took me on a deep dive into sleep hygiene (she’s super good at research), and now I am mostly cured. I could probably write a book about insomnia cures at this point

"I've found since taking magnesium supplements I'm not having any trouble getting off to sleep.

I've tried most things before, most effective but not every time was sleep hy*nosis via utube.

Magnesium glycinate capsules are excellent for this.

Another vote for magnesium supplements, they've really helped me since perimenopause hit. That and a cool bedroom...my window is still open. "

Yeah i think having the window open would actually be good for me - and i have enough bedding to be cosy

"Go for a evening walk.

Using techniques like reframing unhelpful thoughts might also help, which we cover in our self-help CBT techniques section along with other tips."

Really good tips!

"I had issues until I figured a few things out about good sleep:

When its cold i put my electric blanket on for 10 mins to pre-warm the bed

Our sleep patterns are very easily disrupted

Modern living can mean we have distractions stimulants 24hrs a day

If you're waking at a similar time during the night chances are you've trained yourself to wake ..it can take weeks to change it back.

Whatever you do don't look at your phone, tv, stay laid down eyes closed in the dark relax trying to get back to sleep slowly over time you'll retrain your sleep cycle

Happened to me after my divorce took me months to get back to a normal sleep routine.

No screen time for at least an hour before bedtime, read a few pages of a book before sleep and use a torch to lighten your way to bed instead of switching lights on. Works well for me and I have tinnitus to cope with as well.

Actually no. The military technique is to tense your muscles and then purposely relax them and do that limb for limb until you fall asleep. Me personally I can't do that but the tensing and then relaxing is the key to this technique"

So i tense and then tell them to sleep

"I find that without external stimulation my brain wakes up to fill the gap - so if I'm getting tired and on the verge of sleep, and turn the light/TV off, suddenly my brain stops being sleepy.

No caffeine after 1400

No phone/tablet/laptop an hour before sleep.

I try a little meditation / quiet time about 30 mins before sleep.

I used to get about 6 hours a night…with waking in the night too…. My brain would randomly think of stuff and then not switch off….

But now..with little changes…. I’m getting new tween 7-8. Made a huge difference.

The cutting off from the world (no phone/work) an hour before is the key.

Good luck …. The world of google is a great place …. Just have medication as a last resort
