Grey hair on women

Around and about

Is it attractive? I'm almost 50 and blessed with gorgeous dark hair, however I'm starting to see a bit of hair tinsel. I've not dyed my hair since I tried pink highlights in my late teens so wondering if I should consider dying it now or let the tinsel shine through?

Manchester (she/her)

I'm not ready to do it yet in my late 30s, but I think what I'll probably do when I'm ready is try to transition with dye that isn't as stark against my dark hair as the tinsel is. It's what my mum has done for about 20 years (although her grey hair tends to stick out more than her non grey hair, and colouring it calms it down)

Do not do a Theresa Villiers (dyed dark).

I think you will find that many women of a certain age now appear to all have the same blonde hair colour (that really cracks me up with my Uni friends - uni being 35 years ago!)

Personally I would embrace the change, but then I am a bloke and have been grey for a while (though it always surprises me if I see myself in a mirror)

Next Door

Personally I wouldn't dye it. Once you start its hard to stop.

I was dark and my roots were salt and pepper and I was dying it about every 3 wks.

I decided to go blonde a few yrs ago and then, I would approx 5/6wks in-between.

In the summer, I had it cut into a short pixie, With shaven sides from a shoulder lenght bob. I'm now growing out the blonde as my natural grey is a beautiful white.

Hair colour is unimportant to myself, if you sexy it really doesn't matter, I mean having hair isn't important, black ladies regularly shave hair down and look beautiful kind respectful and sexy is all good x

White hair is nice ....it actually looks kinda blonde so I totally understand why you're letting the artificial colour grow out....lucky you....

I'm still naturally dark haired but when the time comes I hope my hair doesn't turn a dirty peppery grey colour....

Mine is multi shades of grey (natural)

I had been dying my hair for most of my adult life but as it grows so fast it wasn’t even 3 weeks between needing doing.

So I did the drastic pixie cut from shoulder length and let it grow out.

My hairdresser says that a couple of her clients asked for the same dye that I have to be grey and she had to tell them mine is natural.

I have various areas of different grey tones to white and some dark bits.

I don’t miss dying it.

However, it does need a lot more conditioning these days as is much drier.

I am now adopting your description of tinsel, I myself am embracing the "silver" after having dyed dark hair for as long as I can remember, it's quite some process of lightening and letting the natural find its way

I’m growing my grey out, I’d succumbed in lockdown to a temporary hair dye that didn’t quite leave my hair properly. I’m also growing it out from a shorter haircut It’s a slow process on both counts.

Somewhere else

Some young women bleach and dye their hair to get it. I would think it would depend on the hair quality and style.

It's entirely your choice. If you choose to colour it the darker you go the more upkeep is required. Highlights are an option, you can lighten your hair gradually, the grey will blend in and the upkeep is very slightly less.

I'm 67 and not ready for grey yet but it would be much easier time wise and financially if I was

My mum is a little younger than you and has been easing into it for a while. Gradually dyeing her hair lighter.

I've got enough grey that it's noticeable if I don't dye it, but I'd have to bleach it to try to blend it. I don't fuck with bleach.

I've been going lighter for years, I was brunette as a younger woman. My hairdresser uses a highlift tint as bleach is awful on my hair. She puts three colours through it in foils and touches up the roots.

There's a dye remover product that steips dye from hair. Needs to be washed out for about 20 minutes but the result is great.

Fairy or Head and Shoulders also mess with dye

I stopped dyeing it in covid. I don't miss the upkeep or the cost at all.

I'm still quite dark all over. Grey at the front. The key is a decent cut and a good hairdryer to reduce the frizz. I'd not go back now

Yes! And I'm now at cusp of working out how to transition out of dyeing ... Or maybe wait till I hit 60 or 75?!

If like me you follow a lot of Fashion and Beauty YouTubers, the "baby boomers" are claiming their age (like Helen Mirren).

Salons now have so many shades of Pewter right through to Silver tinged with some colour. Ultimately it's the condition of your hair that makes it look lush...

I just get my hair highlighted every few months instead of dyed. Less upkeep and trips to the hairdressers. She tends to blend the greys rather than cover them up.
