I'm not sure what is going on but I am not offended at the offensive...whatever that was. Michael Bublé offends me, every fucking Christmas they wheel him out. And I see Mariah Carey is being defrosted just in time for Christmas, she offends me as well. But my telly does have an 'off' button. Unlike me.

Going to assume this is because I took exception to the comments made on a Remembrance Day thread where the OP said he sometimes wishes the Germans had won and when someone asked if that meant he was pro-concentration camp, the OP said he was, but only on Sundays.

If my taking exception to the above comments makes me a "leftie", a snowflake or any other description, then yep. I'll own it.

I'm flattered if my exception-taking has so inflamed the OP that he feels the need to make an entire thread about it.

I didn’t say it to you, or about your relatives, if anybody thinks I was being serious then they deserve to be offended, if people can’t take a joke, not my fault, and if I can not be offended as a Jew and veteran then so can the none Jewish and not veterans amongst us.

Genuine question. Why is the fact that your ex military important in this context?

You will know from your own experience that there are quite a few neo nazis in the military. It doesn’t support your argument one way or the other.

I’m not trying to argue, just genuinely curious to better understand your point.

Sorry, I don’t think I asked my question in a simple enough format.

"Genuine question. Why is the fact that your ex military important in this context? "

The bit that I should have emphasised is “in this context,”.

On a Remembrance Day thread you made a “joke” about concentration camps.

You then mentioned you were a veteran in what seemed to be a shot at a justification for your post.

I was interested in why you thought it important to mention being a veteran in that context.

Thanks for joining in,

Gbat

I didn’t mention concentration camps.

And because it’s a Remembrance Day thread.

Also, if you start a post with “not to argue” then try to argue, it doesn’t necessarily portray you in a good light.

I had family die in WWII also, so are you offended on behalf of me too?

How does this work?

I didn’t say it to you, or about your relatives, if anybody thinks I was being serious then they deserve to be offended, if people can’t take a joke, not my fault, and if I can not be offended as a Jew and veteran then so can the none Jewish and not veterans amongst us.

That was my reply on the Remembrance Day thread, since you ignored it there but mentioned it here.

Stop trying to make it about you.

Such a lovely chap.

Have a great day "

Appreciate it, and you.

"I didn’t mention concentration camps."

No somebody else did and you said you only support them on Sundays.

I'm guessing that was an attempt at humour rather than a serious comment. Then you seemed to be saying that because you are a veteran this made it somehow acceptable to say. Jewish and veteran, therefore I can make holocaust jokes.

I understood the Jewish slant, but not the veteran slant.

I don't understand that argument. Perhaps on reflection you don't either?

We both know it's a Remembrance Day thread, but your military service is not relevant to THIS part of the conversation is it?

I'm guessing you aren't going to answer anyway.

Cheers,

Gbat

But ok, to simplify it for you, because you’re having difficulty apparently.

I made a joke about a war, which involved the military, on a Remembrance Day thread… which involves the military.

Being a veteran is relevant.

Unless somebody is trying to be pedantic and argue for the sake of arguing.

Even though they say things like “not to argue” in their initial post.

Clearly this is not the five minute argument:

O: I'm sorry, the five minutes is up.

M: That was never five minutes just now!!

O: I'm afraid it was.

O: I'm sorry, I'm not allowed to argue any more.

It would have been quicker if you’d answered the question the first time I asked it. Or just said you weren’t going to answer.

You think it’s okay for veterans to make holocaust jokes on a Remembrance Day post because they are veterans. You finally answered it. But I just don’t follow your logic.

Why does being a veteran make a holocaust joke any more acceptable?

Have the courage of your convictions and explain or don’t. As you know, it’s your choice!

I’ll joke about whatever the fuck I like, in a nutshell.

If it upsets you, it’s your problem, not mine.

Maybe next time just say that you want to argue about something rather than saying you don’t want to argue and then trying to arguing.

Same reason you wrote this. Attention and drama

Guess it depends if you offended them on purpose or it’s part of a normal adult conversation where you get to know people and wouldn’t upset them on purpose…

Just cos someone’s offended doesn’t make them right, but equally, being offensive on purpose just seems childish people can disagree without going out of their way to offend people- which I think happens all too often these days

Sooo it's ok for me to say anything I like, be deliberately offensive and it's everyone else's fault because they chose to take offence even if I also choose to give it.

An interesting point of view that means people may abdicate all responsibility for others sensibilities.

We should talk about it and being open and honest can only help to understand different perspectives. It's fine to have dark humour, but knowing your audience is also important in my opinion and if offence is taken, then it's easier to move on my owning up to it than doubling down.

Don’t

Care

Or at least most don’t, some will argue just for the sake of it.

Some people clearly *do* care, why do you care that they do?

Why do you care that I do?

I genuinely don't . I'm just interested, it won't impact my day in any way

Probably the wrong choice of word, I don’t care to be fair, that was kind of the whole point of the post.

Most people don’t care.

Do you reckon so? I think that most people care very much (present company excepted of course) and will avoid saying or doing something they feel might cause offence because they want people to like them. "

Surely their is a difference to liking somebody for the words that come out on here and the in person like, many things said here can be ambiguous and a negative person will always see the negative

"Sooo it's ok for me to say anything I like, be deliberately offensive and it's everyone else's fault because they chose to take offence even if I also choose to give it.

An interesting point of view that means people may abdicate all responsibility for others sensibilities.

In my opinion that's not a great way to live.

Nobody said you should be able to say anything you like, that’s out of context to what I said.

It’s also not a great way to live treading on egg shells in case you inadvertently upset somebody because everything right down to the colour green offends them.

If I offend somebody then so bit it, I do t need to tell everybody about it.

If you’re offended, you also don’t need to tell everybody about it.

We move in different circles.

Most people I know don’t tip toe around every subject and conversation.

"

Neither do most people I know but they do know when it's appropriate to express certain opinions and make certain jokes without waving their 'offence is taken not given ' card.

"Tell the entire fucking world that they’re offended by something?

Nobody gives a fuck.

The late, great Christopher Hitchens would often say: ‘I don’t care if you’re offended. Taking offence is not an argument. I’m still waiting to hear what your point is.’

I'm referring to life in general really not just here.

Some people are negative it's true and some people will deliberately say controversial things which is their right but it's also other people's right to challenge them.

All over

It is all about having respect for other people. Freedom is not about saying or doing as one pleases ignoring how it may impact on others, especially if you already know that it could possibly do so. That could easily be viewed as arrogant and irresponsible. It's not that hard to try not to offend others imo though there are times we might all do it. Then is time to say sorry and move on

How does that answer my question??

“Why must people tell the entire fucking world that they’re offended by something?”

To express how entitled and important they think they're

Well I did have a glass of wine which may have impaired my understanding of the question. Several have tried I thought but perhaps someone will come along and do better before the end of the thread, who knows.

Not at all! Maybe it's more their outrage at what ever they consider to be very offensive? Not about them at all I would say! I know myself I get triggered over what I find offensive about others than I do about myself! Have a very thick skin when it comes to me! X
