I love you all obviously. Except that one user or two.

But is it just me or does this place feel smaller with less people in the forums now?!

Feels like everyone here is starting to feel like my damn family!

Its a phase. It happens. It goes quiet for a while, then gets bigger for a while. Cycle continues and the wheel turns. You get used to regulars. Some of them go. Some stay. New ones show up.

I think most people come in here and never get responded too, realise that most of the regulars only chat to each other, their threads fall flat and that ultimately it's such a massive waste of time.

And that's all before they make a forum faux pas and get shouted at over something minor.

It's not always a welcoming place the forums.

Warks / Northants Border

When chatting to people at clubs or socials, some will often say they read the forums, but are too worried about posting because the place can be unfriendly. Especially if a minor mistake is made, or if an opinion is perceived to differ from mainstream.

An example is the couple from Bristol area who own a farm. They posted a question to see who would be interested in a nudist campsite on their farm. Unfortunately, because they are unfamiliar with the forums, they accidentally posted in the London section. Instead of their error being politely highlighted, the 'tone' of the messages was harsh.

Until such time as the unfriendly nature of some is challenged, it's going to be difficult to encourage an uplift in the forums.

Same. Most of us were like that once. I'm still around, sometimes you get ignored, sometimes you get responses. Regular or newbie, it still happens. Also for a lot of those that are here from covid boom, that was always going to be a special place in time for high forum traffic. Offline acitivies were limited.

Still plenty of new faces around. Still plenty of varied topics. The reason it's the same few that create threads is because so many others don't bother to come up with anything of their own, regardless if they fall flat. Plenty of my own go nowhere, I still put some effort in to attempt. People would rather drop in with a quick comment than create a thread.

We start threads and they crash and burn - it’s fine, we aren’t regulars, we sit on the sides mainly so don’t expect them to be bangers. However, if that happens to others who hardly post too, then you are just going to get the same posters posting so it then seems like it’s just the same friends hanging out and no one can join in or contribute.

I think people realise quicker that the forum isn’t going to the place to fish if you want to meet up. We’ve been here 3 years and met one person for play on the forums - there’s a whole world of people outside the forums.

This is all very true. Unless your views are outrageous, you're pretty much ignored to start with. However persistence is key, people can only ignore you for so long before they give in. Failing that, steal a popular name and you'll get noticed. With regards to threads, unfortunately not enough people will bother to create them so they naturally will be same same.

It's not so much the Lounge has gone that quiet as it's just currently missing a few people who tended to be consistent in creating Lounge type threads, missing for a handful of reasons I think. So we are missing certain faces we are used to seeing. The late night thing too isn't always on it seems. It's only monday and there was a lot on the past weekend too.

When people like Posh, busman, Nero, Meli et al (ie the fairly large number of good people who keep the place going) are a bit quieter it just looks comparatively empty (plenty are still here you can see). Pickle left, maybe he'll come back. JennieTV is really missed too of course. But it's not emptier though I'm sure, people are still around and the most-common thread-starters are just doing other things. It's a good time for new people I guess. And we always have Wonko when he wants to post and Brucie and Tom etc etc. pt

I can honestly say that in my 15 years on here there's been more meets arranged off the back of the forums than anywhere else on the site.

I've also met plenty of people in clubs and at socials and after chatting for a while thrown the whole 'so who are you on Fab?' question out to then be shocked (pleasantly) by the reply.

The forums are what you make them. We were all lurkers once, then first time posters getting ignored and eventually got used to the way things happen. Some stick around. Some don't for their own reasons. Some take breaks, some go UNLOS and then come back suspiciously earlier than the two week window needed to post.

It's always been the way and always will be. It'll never change.

When I was first on FAB I only used the forums and I done well and enjoyed my time. So definitely not saying the forums aren’t a great place to meet - the MLS was an amazing social to attend too.

But I think once you get out of posting regular then the forums don’t hold as much sway and there’s plenty of other places to go looking.

That’s the beauty of FAB - different things work.

Most of my threads crash and burn, I've been around a while (I'm on and off for long periods sometimes) but it still puts me off a bit, so I sympathise there. There are all kinds of reasons for it and I've seen plenty of longtimers here effectively bump their own threads (ah the subtle art of thread maintenance lol - it's worth learning I think!) pt

.

I'm slowly seeing how the fora are real extended community too (ie not just a small one as it often first appears), but I can't see people who chose not to contribute (or contribute only via PM as some do) as 'lurkers' though. It's just a term I never liked, as there is nothing really positive about it. But I know that some people do only want to read the forum not to contribute to it. And if some people are put off from posting here (maybe not hard to see at times), I wouldn't call them 'lurkers' either.

A lot of people like me if I remember, actually post something the first time they come, then just weigh up for a bit whether it's worth posting something again. I doubt it took me long as I think I'm of the mind to post regardless! Which works fine on this forum I think, because as I always say, it's not particularly given for extended conversation here.

Forum software

Due to poor 'multi-quoting' and the absence of 'auto-signing' especially, the simple forum software that Fab uses was clearly built for more 'land your own post' type of threads. The 175-post thread limit (with no extra pages) stops people from over-replying too. And of course there are no 'post likies' either - which is actually no bad thing imo, though that limits post-appreciation too. So it's very easy to get lost in the mix here.

And regarding new threads, Fab has around 100 a day, excluding the ones that are deleted for whatever reason. So new threads can easily get lost at certain times too.

Coventry

In the 10 or so years I've been on here, it's actually got a lot bigger overall.

I was working night shift years ago, and I remember seeing a count of only 3,000 on line at about 4am. At the same time now it's over 20,000.

But yes, the forum side of it remains quite small (and cliquey!!)

I do find it goes through stages like this but I think it depends on who you like too. A lot of my fave posters don't post much or are UNLOS so I'm not enjoying the forums as much lately.
