"So easy to dislike and dismiss their obvious business nous. I worked at a company that had an entrepreneur who started from nothing and created a massive business, he used influencers to peddle his stuff. Influencers are really just cheap advertisers but to get to a place where you can influence others takes a lot of hard work initially. The new entrepreneurial mindset and approach to modern marketing. " The ted moult of t'internet

"Are the influencers the issue... or the people who are influenced by them............" chicken egg, egg chicken... I'm not sure either are an issue as long as people are self aware. Just seems to be legitimising, celebrating, building infrastructure culture and environment based more upon style than substance.

"If they can make money from it why not? It tends to be the older generations that don't like it. " Possibly, though I'm not sure its about liking or disliking, more about understanding the effect on our lives of people who have presence for the sake of it and not for any particular reason nor benefit.

"How can anyone be influenced by someone who is "obsessed" with this new eye liner. It's a fucking eyeliner!!!!!!! " I think online reviews broke us a bit. We expected to be able to get good information about products other than what the people in the shop told us. But then they get gamed, same as everything else. Sasha Wears Slap is just the 2020s "cover yourself in this body spray and girls will be literally drawn to you like a vacuum". It's all just different iterations of "buy our shit"

"It's just marketing by another name. I don't see the big deal. Companies want to sell us stuff, it's another avenue to be sold stuff." unlike marketing, it's effect is right there in its name. If your kids are being influenced into eating disorders because they want to be like the other slim girls then it's not a good thing for that person.

If your kids are being influenced into eating disorders because they want to be like the other slim girls then it's not a good thing for that person. " What do you think marketing is designed to do other than influence you to buy a product or behave in a particular way? Heck, I read a book last year that suggested that marketing has changed the way our societies operate, convincing us that we're consumers rather than citizens and limiting the way we think we can engage with the world. I'm not convinced that what you're describing is materially different to wanting to be like Kate Moss et al, hero-in chic, in the 90s. Just a different version of the same phenomenon for the digital age. Which both parents and children should tackle by gaining digital literacy, not bemoaning that things weren't like this when the only adverts came on the wireless.

The 80s and 90s were full of every famous woman being stick thin and influencing girls to be the same. In the words of Kate moss, ‘nothing tastes as good as skinny feels’. Have a burger and learn about food love, you’re doing it wrong (her, not you)

"An influencer on TV is governed by the ASA,on the interweb they can say anything, make any claim about the product." This is untrue. Advertising standards still apply online and there have been numerous high profile fines and legal cases related to influencers and celebrities making false or misleading claims about products or services.

" No more strange than all kinds of celebrities in years gone by accept now they have more control and can take more money thanks to the internet and social media. Think in the past of people reviewing products and services, models, travel writers, low level journalists, amateur musicians or just faces on TV etc. The world is now their oyster. Good luck to them.
