Urgent help! Dog owners assemble

Friends dog has run off in the park chasing squirrels- not responding to calls or the whistle. Any tips on finding a dog? I’m heading there now to help search

I have one tip that is for pre running off. But otherwise, the dog will tire eventually, maybe best just to wait it out and maybe pop a post on Facebook if they are on there.

Take snacks/treats. Whatever the dog loves. And whatever you do, don’t give up. You might find the dog two or three days later.

Somebody should go round nearby houses, businesses, etc and get the word out. Leave a card or phone number with *everyone*. Dogs like people and will eventually hang out where they can find some humans.

The dog will probably turn up back at home all by itself. But you can’t count on that. Mostly you just need to go be with your friend, who will be having panic attacks right now. Do whatever they ask you to, rather than showing up full of advice.

Dog is now actually missing?

A lot of it will depend on the dog and it's personality.

Some dogs are best to just do what they are doing and they return to the place they left the owner.

Some dogs are nervous and the more people searching and shouting/calling it will cause it to panic more and even hide.

How long ago was it fed? Will it be hungry soon? Is it a food motivated dog?

The prey drive will be high on the dog at first, since it's clearly not trained enough to ignore prey, not much can be done until it tires or loses interest in the chase.

Tell them to not run around the area looking for it.

The scent will confuse it.

If they can, they should wait where the dog went missing, with food, and wait.

In towns though, this may not work as people tend to capture dogs and take them in.

We have local Facebook groups that help find runaway cats and dogs.

They reunited my daughter with her dog in a day.

Mine got out a couple times when I moved house. Someone took her to the vet who scanned the microchip and they called me. Might be worth contacting local vet?

Dog belongs to a vet so pretty certain pooch is chipped but would much rather find her in the park

Hate the idea of just waiting in hope of returning but fingers are crossed.

This is nearly as bad as my son hiding in ikea when he was three.

If it's near their home I'd make sure someone stays home. Definitely get something on Facebook with a pic of the dog. There's also a group called Drones SAR on Facebook worth contacting

Is the dog owner/vet the person who lost the dog in the park? I would have thought they would have known about training and how important 100% recall is. A dog that does not respond to recall is an out of control dog no matter if the recall is good any other time.

My hearing dog went missing the evening of the day I moved into my new home. I phoned the police, they put me onto the local dog wardens office who took all details then suggested a Facebook post and also a local lost dog group that then posts all details to every vet in the area. this was around 8:30 pm, I was well lucky got a phone call at 11:30 the same evening she'd been found literally in the middle of a very busy main road. That was the speed of Facebook. anyhow the lady brought her back to me, I offered to drive to hers but she was visiting her

Pa and was well close. I did give her a good reward and got my little girl back.

Glad they’ve been found!

Our window cleaner left our back gate open and one of my dogs got out. We were all frantic. She came to my eldest son when he was calling her, she absolutely adores him and it was like that beach scene with Bo Derek running along if Bo Derek had been a Rottweiler cross - the relief was immense!!

We did manage to get him back, thanks to a few local school kids, as well as my son and his mate.

Basically just rounded him up and cornered him.

My boy is reactive too and walk him on lead and muzzled if we are out and about but he does love a free run

For future reference, many dogs will return to the last place they saw you. So it's best to stay in that area for a while rather than running around calling for them.

Not a dog person at all ,, I am a cat man ,, but have somehow found that I "volunteered" to dog sit tomorrow ,, After reading this thread I think I will keep the dog on a lead even when we care in the house ,, I lose hats , scarves and gloves all over town I don't want to lose a dog

Hi, leave some of the owners freshly worn unwashed clothing with owners scent on it near where the dog was last seen & his or her favourite toy.... hopefully he or she will sniff these items out & will wait there.
