Nothing sexy here sorry fellas, just looking for ladies ears only.

So basically I have been on the pill for 15 years now and thinking it’s time to cut it loose. The older I’m getting I’m noticing more the effects it has on my body and mood, generally wonder if I would be a happier person without it. It works like clock work and has done its job keeping the fertilising sperm away from me but that’s the only positives I can see.

Has anyone come off the pill from long term?

Did it make you less of a raging bitch?

Did your weight or skin improve?

Was adjusting to normal periods again easy?

Is there a less hormone invasive contraception?

Thoughts please..

I've actually just gone back on the pill after a break of about 12 years, in the hope it will help my periods... not really noticed too many issues so far but then it's only my second month....

I had to come off it due to migraines.

I had the implant which personally I don't hink affected me much, others may disagree.

I have the injection now which I'm fairly sure makes me more hormonal and has made me put on weight.

Sex drive has erupted.

No difference to skin or weight

Periods sadly gone back to absolute shit

Mood no change

I do feel generally brighter & more energetic though. I can’t define it, but definitely just healthier.

I went on the pill at 16 and came off it at 40. Just went cold turkey as my GP was no help whatsoever.

My periods went back to normal straight away, no issues at all until I went into menopause.

You know your body better than anyone.

And you can always go back on it if you want to. X

I came off the pill, because I was fed up of mood swings it gave me. It also made me put weight on also. For all the it'll make you have lighter periods was all bullshit.

I use a cycle tracker so I can monitor my cycle. So when I have a hormone surge I know I'm not a psychotic bitch. And it will only last a day.

Anything with hormones in will affect you on one way or another.

My friend is a gp and refuses to prescribe the injection because it has such a bad effect on so many women’s mental state.

Try the coil, there’s a hormone free one and one with small amounts of hormones in

Due to my age I hope for menopause to kick in but so far I have still fairly regular periods so it will take years.

I feel better off the pill but it limits my fab experience as I’d rather not have sex as I’m paranoid condoms are not 100% safe.

Maybe look into mirena coil if it’s something you’d consider?

I will follow this thread closely, hope you will find some helpful advice.

I would agree with this comment in the sense that perhaps this coil could be an option?

I stopped taking the pill as it gave me acne and weight gain and over all made me very unhappy with myself and subsequently had depression.

I am not allowed the pill any more due to migraines so I have the copper coil.

The gp wants it out as she thinks that's what was making my periods so bad a while back but they've settled again now and until something else becomes available without hormones I'm sticking with this.

The mirena coil does have hormones in it but I have been told they are very localised so there won't be any weight gain/mood changes with it. I've had enough issues in the past that my head won't let me take the risk.

Honestly I just want my tubes tied now so I don't have to worry too much

I came off of it after 10 years. My moods, skin and hair improved dramatically and I lost weight. I know half the issues I had were down to the pill. It makes me a raging she devil for a start and not in a good way. I tried a couple of different ones before I abandoned it completely but none of them worked any different. I'd never go back on it. It did take time for my body and periods to adjust. My periods got slightly heavier and I gwt period pains I never used to have but I think some of that is age and having another child.

I couldn't take the pill due to migraines, I have the depo injection I love it's only once every 3 months and stops mother nature at the time of the month but.... There are some side effects and if you get them your stuck with them for 3 months until it wears off.

I've previously had the coil that made me hormonal as fuck.

Everyone’s pain tolerance is different obviously but my experience of having it fitted was pretty painless, more uncomfortable than sore. For a few hours after I did have some light bleeding and period type cramps but I took some painkillers and that eased it off.

Same again with having it removed.

I will say though, when I first had it fitted mr did say he could feel it while we were having sex but after a few times the string moved into a better position and he couldn’t feel it after that.

I have tried everything! Was on the pill all through my teens and early 20s then went onto the injection which made me bloat and hormonal, back on the pill raging hormonal pyschopath, then tried the coil...twice, both times incredibly painful, constant bleeding, made sex impossible, both times it moved positions. So now I am on nothing at all, au natural and could not be happier. My periods are regular as clockwork, and not hormonal at all.

Also absolutely forces me to use condoms all of the time!

Adjusting wasn't easy at all. I've been blessed with regular periods always and they still were but cycles shortened after being on the pill for years and it took a while to regulate again. The usual occurred. Longer and heavier. Skin is better but I don't have major issues to start with. As for weight- don't think it made a difference ? There was only one pill which made me put on weight.

As for the moods - we all know lots of women report depressive symptoms being on them, I'm not sure if pill made a difference to me (as in before or after) but I cannot use implant or coil as those made me incredibly low and nearly suicidal.

I find inserting more painful than removal. She couldn't get the right angle. A little tear during a stingy moment but nothing what would leave me traumatised. Across the board of women i know experiences varied when it comes to pain. Don't expect it but don't be surprised I guess if it happens.

Being off the pill makes me appreciate and embrace my cycle more usually. Giving in to the current mood and respecting what my body tells me during different phases. Hormones flatten that all but it's not to our advantage. And to anyone who thinks period is a weakness ... try it then mock it you twat. I got my best 5k result when running on my period.

So there is that.. the energy which is hard to define but which comes back with natural hormones. Sometimes. Not for everyone perhaps.

I stopped taking the POP pill about a week ago after taking it for a few years and got my period a couple of days ago. Usually during my time of the months I am a dragon, but I have noticed a marked improvement in my mood this time. Where I would be overly emotional and angry I have been really calm and chilled out. Maybe it's coincidence will have to see how I get on. One of the reasons I have stopped is that I want to see if it will improve my sex drive and ability to orgasm again we will see.

I am really paranoid about having sex without being on anything as obviously condoms are less reliable and I really don't want kids, and especially don't want to get pregnant from a dalliance on fab. I am thinking on giving myself a break for a couple of months and then lookin at getting the mirena coil instead but I am nervous about getting it put in as I've never had kids I heard it can be more painful

I'm on my second Mirena coil, and fitting/removal for me (your mileage may vary) was slightly more painful than a pap smear, nbd.

I came off the pill because I hated the idea of so much hormone messing up my system.

Changed on the coil with much smaller hormone level and have had no problems with it at all. I know people that have the implant and some that have the injection but I wasn't keen on either for myself

I have a tilted uterus so fitting mine wasn't the usual straight forward job. My issues came needing to have mine replaced properly (one slipped and was replaced easily).

Mine had totally embedded and couldn't be retrieved. Multiple scans and appointments. The final attempt to remove was super difficult and if had been unsuccessful would have needed the operation.

Could never check the strings either as they had totally folded up on themselves. We're intact when I was shown the removal.

Whilst on it - absolutely amazing time. Practically no periods, moderate pms and very effective birth control.

I'd personally never get another one fitted now I'm separated. I'm too concerned removal would be the same drama for me.

The only thing that has really worked for me, with no side affects, is the implant in my arm. It lasts for 3 years and I don’t get a period at all ((bliss)) !!! Having it inserted/removed is pretty straightforward and not particularly painful.

I'm on my third coil, love the lack of periods which were horrendous, & low dose hormone means I'm pretty settled in moods. The anxiety I have is from experiences & when around similar people. Fitting/ removal experiences are mixed. Had smooth insertions/removal & a crap insertion/removal. I take pain killers prior now. I'd still suffer the experience in order to have it though as hated my heavy/irregular periods.

Absolutely head for the coil. It's the best thing I did. So there is the IUD which is completely hormone free but can make your periods worse. Or the IUD - I have the mirena and took about 6 months to settle but I rarely have bleeds and I would say my moods are much more stable now. Only problem is there is around a 6 months wait most places for coils

Came off it at 33 and felt like a different person. Had been on it to help with heavy periods since I was 15. Whilst it helped with those, I always felt "different" on it...ki d of flat lined.

Felt like a different person when I came off it, sex drive improved, head felt clearer and although my periods could still be bad, overall I felt better. Fell pregnant a few months afterwards.

When I wanted to come off the pill and get my tubes tied I was about 30 years old. They said they wouldn't do it because of my age and I'm case anything happened to my son and I wanted to replace him like a hamster

Discuss with the Dr before hand they can use a numbing gel or can even do a cervical block. For me personally it was just a little uncomfortable when they applied the forceps to do the sounding but the actual coil I had no issues with. I would recommend going to someone who specialises though rather than your GP

I got sterilised last year and very pleased I did it. I have clips on my fallopian tubes. The procedure was laproscopic, in and out same day, needed a week off work (had a fairly manual job at the time) as felt sore and tired for a good few days after. Only two very small incisions- one in the belly button which isn't visible, and one 1cm incision off to the lower left that had one stitch- 10 months on it is barely visible. Wish I'd done it years ago!

It's a battle! I have been numerous times and was told they won't even consider it until after 30. I'm passed 30 now so fingers crossed it can go ahead. Really bugs me how people feel we can't make our own decisions and know our own mind.

I have been on progesterone contraception since I was 17 (mini pill and then the implant).

I have only recently come off contraception completely and I feel better than I ever have. My mood, skin and hair have improved significantly, I'm finding it easier to lose weight and my sex drive went through the fucking roof (to the point where Hubby and friends are struggling keep up, lol).

Unfortunately I think I will need to go back on something though. Hubby has had the snip but we have already had a whoopsie with a split condom with a friend.

Perhaps I should just get all my playmates to have the snip too.

I was on the pill from 16 to 45 and had the most horrendous periods. When I was 45 they discovered a medication I take can cause serious birth defects in babies and said that I had to come off the pill to get something more reliable. I've just had my second mirena coil fitted and it's the best thing ever for me. No periods in 5 years, no weight gain and no difference to my sex drive

Honestly the insertion was slightly more uncomfortable as they measure you before and that stung a bit but nothing I couldn't deal with. And just a bit crampy after again nothing taking a paracetamol couldn't knock on the head.

I came off the pill years ago as I got fed up forgetting to take it and panicking about housing another crotchgoblin. I switched to merina coil and it has been the best for me. I've had 1 now for 7 years I think and had no periods at all which is great. It is unpleasant having it changed but it lasts for 5 years so its worth it for me. I'm not moody and my skin is great and the no periods is amazing

Skin and weight are the same, sex drive is the same (I'm an ace)

Though, all my life my periods weren't ever bad. Not much pain not much blood but since being on the pill for so long then off again.

It's a nightmare. My periods make me unable to move. I change 5 times a day and need to wash because I litrally can't keep up with how much.

I don't know if my body just changed that dramatically from my 20s to 30s or its a pill thing.

Feels odd to post on this thread as a bloke, but I just thought I’d confirm this. I’ve definitely been able to feel the coil when having sex with some women who had one. Not in a bad way, at all. Just in a ‘huh, that’s the coil then’ way. It’s a little weird until you consciously think ‘oh yeah, that’s what it is’.

I came off birth control at the beginning of the year and am more myself than I have been in 15 years.. my skin is better, my periods took a couple of months to settle down to regular but I'm overall healthier, my mood is far better and my weight is slightly lower without changing anything else.

Nothing could convince me to go back onto the pill now.

I'm just going to finish the cycle, have my withdrawal bleed and then not go back on it. I'd rather finish it off so I can track future periods easier.

Well … I think it’s something that should maybe be talked about a bit more openly. I know the first time I felt one I was worried. Was I supposed to be able to feel that? Was it fitted wrong? All that sort of thing.

I stopped the POP to get pregnant with my daughter. I felt immensely better without it in all ways and so never started again after she was born. We've just used condoms for the past 6.5yrs, nothing else. I'm currently in a medically induced early menopause but you can't trust that for contraception so we still use condoms. There's reasons why I've declined trying a Morena coil. I'm awaiting a hysterectomy to get rid of the whole fucking lot.

Highly recommend the Mirena, had one fitted since 2010 without any problems whatsoever. Yes it does pinch for a few seconds when inserted and removed but that’s it then for 5 years. No periods, don’t have to think about remembering to take pills etc plus it’s super effective.

The hormones are localised so that’s not an issue and I’ve never experienced any side effects either.
