Somewhere In The Ether…

Good folks; How well do you know your immediate neighbours?

Are you the sort of person who likes to get to know them well and interact with them regularly or else, do you prefer to keep yourself and your business, more to yourself so to speak, whilst still maintaining civil relations?

Furthermore, if you are of a more social nature, do you make it a point to get to know neighbours further afield in your community?

I know them very well. In fact, 'we' have a WhatsApp group for most of the neighbours on our street, for help, advice, support, taking in packages or deliveries and general updates.

I grew up in a rural village with a large drive off the main street so never had neighbours persay,

I settled in Suburban Dublin,and i bought off the plans, so i was a bit nervous about the thought of having neighbours, but,,

both my neighbours are brilliant, im in the middle and we all get on, tools exchanged often, dinners passed over the back walls regularly, BBQs and whiskey sipping often, Gin nights by the fire pit on summer nights,,

My house and dogs looked after when im not here.

One even has a key to my front door,

Couldn't ask for better people.

I think i got very lucky.

Know my neighbours reasonably well. They are knocking on 80's door but very nice and helpful. We have our differences, mainly political and they read Daily Mail

South Side.

Yes, we all know each other. Its a rural area, so people are naturally curious. Its a good thing, as one feeds the cat when im away, another invites me to their sauna, and regular loans of tools and ladders.

The other side has moved out but we grew up together; my siblings and I, and the children next door.

I love my neighbors. One the one side we leave each other door step gifts. On the other side our kids play together. On the next street is my best friend. I feel really lucky to have such good neighbors

We know their names and get on perfectly well with both sides. Much friendlier with one side. She's a few years older than us. We get invited to her big family summer BBQs and never complain when the music goes on late in the night.

My husband has helped the lady 2 doors up with various odd jobs. She's in her 70s and seems to know everyone in the street. We know a few others, including the man who dresses up as Santa every Christmas and brings chocolate for the kids. It's an alright area really. Nice enough people on the whole.

There's 6 flats in our block and while I saybhello to all my neighbours I couldn't tell yiu a single one of their names.

I know my old neighbour's dog was called Milo and I chatted with him a lot, no idea what those neighbours were called either.

I get on with neighbours on both sides of me. One side more than the other as she's become a friend, I even went to hers for Christmas Dinner. I also know a few other people on the street.

I’m on smiling and hello terms with the neighbours next to us and the ones at the bottom of the drive and we take in parcels for them. The ones next to us going down the drive I don’t particularly like because he parks his car like an arsehole. In fact he doesn’t park it, he abandons it.

We tend to keep ourselves to ourselves generally.

Some we know better than others. Direct neighbours on good terms and kids play together. Might have a drink with but some of the others may just be a high across the street. One neighbours couple know our secret but aren't into that but we get on and cht about it after a few drinks. We are very lucky in general.

The couple opposite were lovely but they moved due to raising of service charges etc.

Next door looks through you as if you're invisible.

Any kind of community nowadays in this type of living is dead and buried.

As a kid of the 70's when we knew all our neighbours families I find it quite saddening in all honesty.

It's probably turned me into one of them now as I won't even take in a parcel for anyone as you actually get no thanks for it

Penny knows everybody by name, their kids names and could tell you what everybody's taste in cake is, I just nod and grunt and the other males and they return the same. It's a friendly street.

I have lovely neighbours, both immediate to me and all further down the road. This is my sixth house since leaving home and have been lucky enough to make good friends of neighbours at each house.

Known my neighbour close to 30 years and friendly they are, we bounce off each other as for the other side a lovely lady all I can say. Mind you most of the folk whom live in the surrounding area are lovely people in my section rest I'd say it's mixed but quiet

I have been lucky with neighbours and had and still have some excellent ones. Very friendly and there when you need them. All except one family a bit further up who the less is said the better, especially how they let their kids behave. There are also a couple of nosey ones but pretty harmless to be fair. Always good to be in good terms with you neighbours I think respecting their space and need to enjoy their homes as you like to enjoy yours. Noisy and inconsiderate neighbours who think it's OK to do whatever they and their kids want with no consideration for others are not my cup of tea.

Near Wells

Neighbours on both sides are retired and well into their seventies, if not eighties. I get on fine with both of them, one lady often brings me around home made cake and vegetables she's grown in her garden.

I do wonder what they think about the number of guys that turn up to my house sometimes. They have to park opposite in full view of the neighbours but nobodys ever mentioned it.

Our neighbours are friendly enough. Lived next door all the time we've lived here, lady and her son one side, old lady on the other, I always look out for her, she was widowed last year so I take her meals and will check in on her regularly. I baked a cake every week for her over lockdown. She is lovely, was always lovely to my boys when they were kids always bought little bits for them and always giving them money for the shop so I like to think I'm repaying the gestures

That sounds great and how people should be and look after each other and especially the elderly. I do something similar with some elderly neighbours and get their shopping too as often as I can as they can't go easily and no longer drive.

Interesting question this. Personally We have only once had decent nice neighbours, not my doing I must add, but generally as we have always managed to buy a property in a different area or county, the neighbours just have not been very friendly. We started young and bought our own house outright aged only 22. sold at a good profit and moved on we did this in all 9 times. Some neighbours didn't hold from telling us we should not afford or deserve to afford etc etc.

Also many years ago when I was working for a contractor we had contracts with the old Tower hamlets council then, Westminster council, South London, and Barnet council,, (incidentally where I met David Jason's Mum lovely lady and so very proud of him) anyhow being genuinely interested in people and social structure I always asked the older residents how they got on with their neighbours , sort of social interest information interest on my part, I visited thousands of addresses over the 14 years and at the start they would say oh my neighbours are great we went through the war together, brought our children up together shared this and that this was mainly in the old balconied council tenement buildings, at least 80% knew everyone in their block, in the newer and tower blocks it was around 50/50 as they had been rehomed from old blocks that had been condemned.

In my last year before I left that contractor to start on my own I would estimate the percentage more like 2%. I was quite friendly with a few old timers and would call socially now and then for a cuppa and a chat, and it was heartrending to hear these old timers say the didn't know anyone in their blocks now as it's all new people a lot of immigrants and a language problem, and they just could not cope with the changes. Back in the 40's 50's 60's people living in a lot of these tenements were related as then when a "child" was old enough or married the parents could go to the council and get them "on the list" and when a flat became vacant they just went to the council office and took the flat on and signed up and got the keys. The good old days, well yes for some. Any how I find neighbours mostly want to keep themselves to themselves these days so I do the same!

We know ours really well!

We are mid terrace so the house To the left is J’s parents house. The house to the right is a alcoholic we’ve known for 9 years. He’s either absolutely lovely , or kicks right off at the slightest thing, but he doesn’t give us any trouble anymore and is very polite now.

We always chat when we see each other.

To be fair we know every neighbour in our cul - de -sac , we all get on really well

Absolutely love my immediate neighbours, always popping round each others for small things or a nice catch up, my other close by neighbours we know as well but not so close with unfortunately.
