Wheelchair User Left on a Plane

A wheelchsir user literally crawled down a Ryanair plane staircase to get off after being told assistance was an hour's wait. What if there had been a fire? Surely the air stewardesses could have helped. What's going on here guys. It's all over the news

He said he couldn't wait an hour because he needed to use the toilet. I was shocked to realise there is never a wheelchair user accessible toilet on a plane.

Well there you go, he bought a ticket on a mode of transport that quite clearly was unsuitable for his needs, and now he’s complaining about it, typical

There was also the story two days ago about the Cardiff station next to the University. It is 19 years since disabled access was promised to cross the track. At present wheelchair users have to go to the next station, change trains then come back a stop.

Assistance has nothing to do with the airline, it's the responsibility of the airport operator. You get (or don't get) the same assistance whether you travel by Ryanair or Emirates.

Ryanair don't charge seat reservation fees for disabled passengers and their companions. Every other airline does. One up for Mr O'Leary.

DLR is good. Boats are good if you risk your life descending the piers (which I did last time ). Buses depends on how busy and how many people are blocking the wheelchair space. Underground generally pants. I push most places rather than get on transport.

On buses in Manchester, I've seen parents with pushchairs lose their shit when a wheelchair user wanted the space

Sit down, Kevin, that space is for them, not you.

One was due to lack of transport on arrival, seems they weren’t expecting several planes with 400 passengers to arrive on schedule at an airport, and didn’t have anyone to drive the buses

One was due to late loading of luggage, we were all on the plane, the cases were elsewhere- basically, they laid off lots of staff during the pandemic then struggled to recruit when they suddenly needed them as they want to pay minimum wage for many jobs, but many don’t want to do such demanding jobs when other options are available. On the plus side, the head of Birmingham Airport reportedly had a 6 figure payrise for the extra demands of dealing with the mess he created

Was that due to the lack of disability assistance, or general delays?

One was due to lack of transport on arrival, seems they weren’t expecting several planes with 400 passengers to arrive on schedule at an airport, and didn’t have anyone to drive the buses

One was due to late loading of luggage, we were all on the plane, the cases were elsewhere- basically, they laid off lots of staff during the pandemic then struggled to recruit when they suddenly needed them as they want to pay minimum wage for many jobs, but many don’t want to do such demanding jobs when other options are available. On the plus side, the head of Birmingham Airport reportedly had a 6 figure payrise for the extra demands of dealing with the mess he created "

Yeah, airport delays are a total ball ache in general, agreed.

It is very frustrating though, when all the rest of your flight has disembarked and you are stuck with anxious cabin crew, who can't help but also can't leave their shift till you are removed by the airport assistance people. It's also very offensive to be told you might miss the flight you arrived first at the gate for, simply because no assistance turned up. This happened to me back in July last year. I was at the gate before any other passengers or crew yet everyone else was boarded and ready to go and I was still stuck in the gate area due to no assistance. The airport were happy for me to miss it, therefore also missing a connection in Amsterdam. I only boarded thanks to the intervention of the KLM pilot.

I have a close relative in a wheelchair and it's bloody appalling the way disabled people are treated.

Wheelchair users and air flight = absolute nightmare in the UK.

I've never had a problem abroad though.

I think 3 of these stories were Gatwick, one at Manchester and the latest one was in Sweden. Ryanair seems to have a bad rep?

Assistance has nothing to do with the airline, it's the responsibility of the airport operator. You get (or don't get) the same assistance whether you travel by Ryanair or Emirates.

I know, I was saying that there are also some negative comments about Ryanair's approach to disabled passengers.

My experience with Ryanair has only been positive and as I said, they're the only budget airline not to charge disabled passengers for seat reservations. To be honest, all airlines and their staff have been fine. It's the airport operator assistance that's shite."

Jet2 don't charge for seat reservations if you have special assistance

There's another on the list! Just a shame their flights are usually far more expensive than Mr O'Leary or SleazyJet (who are now worse than RA for charging for bloody breathing and everything else!)

Downside is Ryanair mandate us wheelies sit at the back, by a window, because we get left behind in an emergency. We'll wave bye bye as everyone else whizzes down the yellow slide

My airline and yep I’m cabin crew….

We have an onboard wheelchair that fits down the aisle, and accessible toilets, well one on each plane, you can sing a cat in there!

Also it is usually the airport ground wheelchair team that are the hold up. I’ve awaited with many passengers for a wheelchair.

Often sitting with them having a chat offering a drink (water/tea)

Trust us we want them off as quick as they want off, we don’t get paid to wait and it holds up the turnaround teams.

But we do our best to make the wait as comfortable as possible

I’ve even had a captain go up the jet bridge bringing a wheelchair down to speed things up before.

It’s the old problem of demand outstrips supply, lack of staff etc

I have never, ever been on a plane with a wheelchair accessible toilet! And the airport aisle seat doesn't fit up all aisles (KLM Cityhopper is one example). Even when the seat does fit, it's incredibly difficult to get in 'em and one feels like they're being smashed against every seat arm along the way

I try to avoid needing the loo (bonus of having a ginormous capacity to wait )

The fact Ryanair make you sit against the window mean you can't exactly get out anyway.

Is yours one of the more upmarket airlines?

I’m not with a budget airline

We even on the airbus have two toilets in the middle where the dividing wall comes away so an extra large area is created… however you have a huge space with two loos in it!

We are trained to strap you in, arms crossed across your body, and pull you down the isle slowly and backwards not causing injury

Even have PTB onboard (passenger transfer boards)

My brother is a wheelchair user and I’d happily take him on a trip when he sorts his passport out!

Yeah, we can't afford upmarket

Cattle class it is for us. Most of the stress is honestly the airport assistance. Once I'm on the plane (or off it at the other end), the rest is pretty straightforward.

Tomorrow, it's trains. Wish me luck
