Portsmouth

Away from the place you've always known?

I've lived in Portsmouth nearly all my life, it's very safe and convenient, but everyone knows everyone.

I love a weekend away where I go to a place and nobody knows me, it's very liberating!

I do not recommend a small town in Devon in that case. They ALL know each other.

I and my wife moved from Durban to Johannesburg - about 350 miles.

Then we moved to Gaborone in Botswana for a year - 230 miles.

Then back to Pretoria ( 50 miles north of Johannesburgl.

Then we emigrated to the UK, and have been in Oxfordshire ever since.

I don't recommend the upheaval, but sometimes you have to.

I moved to London when I was cabin crew but had no idea where was a good place to live, the weird hours and weeks away made it really hard to get to know people and I became very lonely, very quickly. Because I was long-haul (one trip every week or so) I realised I could move back up North and drive to Heathrow. I was considering trying again when I met B so I stayed up North.

There are a lot of South Africans spread sround the globe. Half of my high school class emigrated to various places, and most of my university friends. At least 10 live within 2 hours' drive of me.

Yes I've moved around. Nobody really knows me because I have been working away more than I've been at home and when I'm home I just keep myself to myself. I lived at my previous address for years and sometimes when I went out, locals would ask where I was from and they'd be like.."no way! How come I've never seen you before "

Where I grew up is a different story. I used to mingle more and it was a small town where everyone knew everyone or knew of them. I would of thought pompey would be big enough to go un-noticed. (Well atleast for me) it's one of the things I like about feeling incognito when I'm staying in Southsea.

Moved from Yorkshire 6 years ago. No regrets at the time, was absolutely the right decision to make- I was spending all my spare time driving back and forth to see my hubby- and I love it here. But my first grandson was born 4 months ago and he is back in Yorkshire, so now I'm back to spending all my spare time driving back and forth to see him and my daughter!

Come and spend a weekend in Oxfordshire!

Until I was 35 I lived less than 10 miles from home (Camberley, Surrey) at any one time. But then I had a career change and moved to Kent.

That was a good move and I made some great friends at the new job, but never really settled.

Moved to Oxfordshire and have been quite happy here because it’s so nice but still close to home.

Temporarily moved to Cumbria for a year and was unspeakably lonely. Project came to nowt so I wasn’t unhappy to be moving back.

All moves done on my own. Settled now but would gladly move if I met the right person.

Not all that North of North London

I moved to London 16 years ago pretty much in a whim, I knew the girl I was seeing and had a few casual friends. Then a few years later when I realised london could well be the death of me and realising I missed having easy access to countryside I moved to Hertfordshire mot knowing anyone. This is the second town I've lived in Hertfordshire and I know virtually no one and like it that way

Yup, moved loads. This is the 6th country I've lived in.

The comfort of knowing a place is nice but not as much as being able to completely reinvent yourself. For instance since I moved to the North East I have been Hector Montoya, an international lumberjack consultant.

Thanks for all the responses! I think I'd still need to be near the coast, I couldn't live in land, parents lived in Lincolnshire for a while, that definitely wasn't for me. Or if I ever got the opportunity, back to New Zealand as that's about as far away as I can get!

I have and it was the best thing I ever did. I grew up in a fairly rough area. From being about 12 I was involved in petty crime. As I got older this escalated into more serious things. Its not a life I wanted anymore so moved away.

I go back occasionally as still have family in the area and occasionally will bump into one of my old 'friends'. This definitely reminds me it was the right thing to get out of there.

Yes, moved from west of Ireland to London in my early 20s, after 12 years moved back to Ireland but a town where I knew nobody. Eventually moved back to where I came from.

Loved the anonymity and the buzz of London, but once kids were born, felt the things which made it a great place when young and free made it a tough place to parent. Plus I wanted my children to grow up knowing their extended family.

Yup. I've moved quite a lot.

The biggest move was Edinburgh to Surrey and then Surrey to Fife.

Although it can be stressful, I do love that feeling of hope that comes with a fresh start x

I went to high school in a tiny little town in Arizona. Most of my ex classmates still live there, their parents still live there and many of them have never left the place, not even on holiday.

Each to their own and do what makes you happy but that is my idea of hell.

Places I've lived in no particular order? (General areas only of course).

Northants, Bucks, London, Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, Herefordshire, Surrey, Birmingham, Bristol and now Somerset.

Moving around is a natural part of life for most these days. Either due to work or family commitments.

I can't imagine staying in rhe sane place all my life and one of the things that's always struck me about America is that 1 in 6 have never left their own state and half don't own a passport.
