Having lived in some of that accommodation I can assure tou it's a very long way from hotel standard, in fact it's pretty disgusting, regularly loses hot water and heating, is generally sited out the way as to keep noise down, has issues with mould and probably should have been condemned 20 years before the last military inhabitant moved out. It will not be pleasant.

£6 million a day for a hotels ? Yikes, something has to be done , this is not sustainable and u fortunately no one ever wants this is their area. Lots of outcry about the area not being suitable /able to support the numbers but wouldn’t the base have been virtually self sustaining when it was active ? All comes down to what investment there is in the rebuilding of the base and facilities I guess ?

I mean, they could always put a decent process in place to speed up applications couldn't they? Wouldn't need so much accommodation then?

Instead of continually using immigrants as a convenient distraction from all else going on, blaming them for the countries problems, passing taxpayer cash to service provider buddies to accommodate and feed them and attempting to break international law with new legislation?

Why not just do the right thing for once and treat them as human beings instead of pawns on a chessboard to stoke division and attempt to gain votes?

That was when it was for Brits, now they will spend millions and millions bringing it up to spec and equipping it with everything you could need.

They keep trotting out this "£6 million" figure but that was actually first put out there more than a year ago. Since then around 50,000 more have arrived and the governments own figures say virtually none processed so where are they all staying for free?

Invest properly in processing, get the decisions made - some will be able to be returned to their country of origin and some will become full contributing members of society.

Yet again the tories have stripped funding and resources and are left to sort out a mess of their own making

"Plans to house asylum seekers at a historic former RAF base in Lincolnshire have been formally announced by the government. It has been rumoured for some time that RAF Scampton would be used as an asylum centre which caused uproar among the local community and wider public."

What a difference a few weeks makes. BTW Scampton the village has a population around 1,500, the same number as expected for migrants. Scampton is pretty much rural with no facilities. Will end well

Yesterday's news said it costs £150 a day per asylum seeker. They are in Britainnia hotels which cost £40 max. I appreciate there are food costs on top but someone is making a huge profit.

On the other hand, Scampton in Lincolnshire, is now redundant as a base with the exception of a few accommodation blocks that would be a suitable option, the rest is work buildings and hangars...

I believe they were figures raised in parliament discussion yesterday and widely reported. If I understand correctly the 13 billion was the figure for the last 5 years and the 6 million is the current daily cost to government. I believe the figures haven’t been disputed so I presume they’re based on public information of government spending

The page questioned the figures quoted in those publications and goes on to say that those figures weren’t correct hence the specific claim by those publications was false however ….

Let's not be pedantic on the precise figure, but we know there are around 35,000 asylum seekers in hotel accommodation. Just do some maths on accommodation, meals, benefits, social workers, legal costs. Common sense tells us this will run into many £millions per day. If we are all happy to accept this situation fine, but then it's no good moaning about underfunded NHS, schools, roads, military etc etc.

The real problem is its location. Its the old american RAF base at weathersfield in essex. Was untill 6 months ago being used by police training. Its location is about 10 miles to local main supermarkets and amenitys. Not on a bus route. How will they be expected to get to places like shops etc. I also think the local village is worried that there is nothing for them to do threre.

I'm just waiting for the WHO or some other organisation to rule that the accommodation is uninhabitable. The same accommodation so many of us veterans spent so many years living in!

Seriously though, on base military accommodation is not suitable for families. Single occupancy rooms or large scale multiple occupancy, shared ablutions, minimum insulation and power provision by today's standards.

As for the old married quarters - AFAIK on every other base that got closed it was usually sold off so I imagine that has been the case here?

Indeed, as well as the facilities/transport issue described above.

I’m sure the main problem with this plan is the same with just about every a government project recently, communication.

What exactly are they proposing, what changes are they going to make, what provisions will be in place. So much they could say to address these beforehand to get public on their side (or not depending the plan

The £13 billion figure is also wrong. If you take the £7m daily figure givin in newspapers.

These claims ignore that around £1.2 million of this cost goes towards providing ‘bridging accommodation’ for Afghan refugees who arrived in the UK via legal resettlement schemes (the government has described bridging accommodation for Afghans as “as a short -term solution to bridge the gap between arriving in the UK and moving into settled accommodation.”)

These figures are based on numbers provided to the Home Office Select Committee in October 2022.

I refuse to be swayed into villainising migrants and asylum seekers when the real criminals are in charge of the government. I can attest to the fact that the military accommodation is likely shit anyway, and the base was probably due to be shut down soon, if it hasn't been already.

This can’t be said/repeated enough. Feel free to get angry and inefficient governments or excessive spending but remember the majority of people making this trip have been through absolute hell and are just regular humans looking for safety

What really annoys me is that the military stop using these establishments, and then millions of pounds are spent making them ‘habitable’ for the migrants.

So we are saying is - the accommodation is fit an appropriate for our military to live in ….. but not migrants!!

Some of the accommodation our service people love in is disgusting … both single living, and family accommodation, but money is never available and they are not seen as a priority!

The thing is, if the Government bothered its arse to get on and process people we'd be able to return undeserving cases to their country of origin.

Ukrainian because its clear to see what's going on in there country and yes other countries too yes I know I'm saying its just getting outta hand, we are a small island compared to France so small, look how much it cost a day £6 million a day for housing in hotels, which is meant to be for tourists to bring in the monies, we have a major housing issue in this country major debt. It's the other way round, the majority are migrants looking for a better life. The number of asylum seekers from war torn countries escaping death are a minority. No one is has said uncontrolled immigration is acceptable, either on here or political party wise..

I'll be honest even as a bit of a left leaning person I'm not sure many at all from Albania has a valid case for asylum but countries where there is alongside Ukraine an armed conflict going on or the regime is oppressive then there are and will be valid cases from those..

The whole issue is being used as a deflection by this government who have by their policy of removing the means whereby safe and legal applications could be made caused the whole boats issue, they were warned it would happen and pressed on as that's what their core voters want..

It's a complete mess but it's down to the Tory government..

I know RAF Scampton was proposed. I know the camp and the area. Sounds a terrible idea. Why because simply it's in the middle of nowhere with nothing around like shops, amenities or things to do. Just a load of residential family housing in what was the old married quarters site. So dumping 100s of people next to a quiet family community in middle of no where with nothing to do sounds unfair on both the residents and the migrants. Imagine when they are free to move around all there is to move around in is quiet residential streets. Not much fun for them and not good for the ambiance and feeling of security for the neighbourhood. I am by no means insinuating these migrants are criminals or wrong do'ers just people find it very unsettling when there are groups of strangers roaming around all times of day without task or purpose. If I was being cynical I'd say the Government's plan is to try ghettoise these people in far off dumping grounds and hide them as far a way as possible from large centre's of voting population. Kind of out of sight out of mind tactics for the next elections.

I stayed in hotel in Brighton just on the border with the town centre, there was a lot of refugees staying there I would say 98% young men they mostly just sat outside on wall smoking and wolf whistling or trying get peoples attention, now is this wrong I dunno where else can they go? But all young men mid 20s plus. So my point is if where using hotels meant to be for tourists from abroad to boost UK revenue and British folk off for seaside weekend but its taken up with immigration people that says enough is enough, there use the butlins holiday camps next.

And if you read back I'm all for immigration but wow when your putting people in hotels meant for tourists to boost the UK revenue you got a serious problem. We have no room not enough housing to house people Been here all there lives or 20+ plus years but people still say let in any tom dick Harry. It's gotta be controlled surely you can see that.

Hotels are meant for tourists ? According to whom ? Where does it say that in the Good Business Guide ?

A hotel is meant for Guests.

It matters not who they are or where they come from. Only that they (or someone else) pays for the bed.

Unclaimed, unpaid beds are dead money. Beds need filling to be viable.

That's exactly the feeling I had last night watching the news, some local residents saying they agreed with using the bases, just not in that particular location. One lady was concerned about walking her dog alone in the dark, hello ??? Why would you ?? Immigrants or not.

I see no issue with using the bases but apparently its going to cost more than using hotels due to the cost of upgrading them

Who is paying this £6 million a day the government so more debt we get into so taxes go up public services cut to pay for this, can't get any revenue from tourists abroad visiting as all hotels taken up, so when your taxes go up don't moan grumble but say awwwwww I don't mind paying 25% of every pound I earn because its helping these people

There’s a lot of numbers in this and the truth is well what’s the truth? There is enough evidence in the above to work out the government have made a complete hash of this, so vote them out and get someone else in, that’s the world WE live in, some of these people coming in have nothing, have seen war, with their own eyes, what have we seen, most of us ? well there a spat on twitter a few days ago about so and so ….. exactly we have not seen hardship like they have, some of these people have seen apocalyptic scenarios right in front of them, now granted there is also some evidence to say the immigration system is letting in some people who give the impression they are here for a free ride on a comparatively better social system and health service but they are not the reason the nhs is failing, all this smacks of gross incompetence by the govt to do anything remotely humane either way, we are 7 billion people plus spinning on a rock that we are destroying and the media is doing its level best to create enough story to keep the military industrial complex running just fine and dandy while the public fight over crumbs, the right to be heard, when all that really matters is there are human beings out there trying to escape being slaughtered, just let them in for gods sake, feed them house them and before you all cry how? Well if google and Amazon paid their taxes then that’s how hospitals built roads fixed, doctors surgeries opened and the needy taken care of, but no we are trapped in the cycle of governments feeding into the wealthy, the govt aren’t in charge, they don’t make the decisions, the money makers do and until that changes we will be ever downward in the spiral, peace and love

The UK workforce is approx.1.2m short according to latest CBI report into employment numbers.

We so obviously need hundreds of thousands of people who are willing to carry out menial work, let's put these migrants to work in exchange for their keep while they go through the asylum application process.

As for using old military sites, why not?

This government has added over 100,000 refugees waiting to have their claims assessed, to the waiting list. 13 years tp do something effective about this, including staff and accommodation planning and preparation. UK citizens are decent and have seen the disgusting treatment givem on our behalf to poor people, oftem fleeing wars and degrading crises. We wouldn't want this for our own families and know they deserve common decency and respect. So mamy children have been abducted and the government doesn't care. It's obscene.

A proper plan meeds to be made. Amd all accommodation needs to be of a high standard, fit for anyone coming from traumatic backgrounds.

Yeah right.

Except most of those other countries take in far more refugees, treat them better and don't class them as subhuman, unlike many in this country and on these forums.

To be honest I really wonder why they risk their lives trying to get here given the attitude towards them shown by so many. It's almost as if despite losing homes, families, friends, their possessions and in some cases their lives......it's worth it to them.

Strange that.

There's a proposal to house some refugees in a disused open prison not far from here. Facebook is alight with outrage and 'concerned citizens' are talking about coming across 'gangs of single men' while walking their dogs, 'them' being allowed into the town, curfews etc.

And it's fake news and concerns such as this that sparked the Knowsley riots at the Suites Hotel in February, when the far-right got involved, torched a police van and assaulted a couple of key workers.

What I can't understand is.

In other countries such as Greece for example on many of the islands Cyprus and others.

Large secure camp's have been built with welfare facilities and the ability to house many people.

Do we not have the ability to do the same?

Or will the bleeding heart liberals start cleaning foul and it being inhuman?

Let's start treating the migrants as humans and create a system to process them efficiently and humanely, people who have arrived Purely for economic reasons fuck them off .

Women and children and families a priority.

Single men who have left their entire family behind sorry no admittance.

Also I have said this before.

It's about bloody time that Arab and Muslim countries started taking more of the share of the migrants not just Turkey.

These massively wealthy Arab nations could easily take care of many thousands and the cultural change would not be as much on these poor people as coming to a completely different culture.
