When did a weeks holiday from work become a weeks "leave"? What's that all about?

Known as annual leave. I guess because you don't have to use it exclusively for holiday?

I'm 51 and I literally can't recall it ever being called anything other than annual leave

It’s always been annual leave for me , but holiday or vacation. I often go on holiday whilst working still !
