Barcelona or madrid both very historic, lots of art and not too far to travel

Maybe best as a day out. Have you thought about the Roman City of Chester?

I can't comment about the art, but there's plenty of Roman history to devour.

Lyon, three rivers, Rhone, Soane and the Beaujolais!

It's got plenty of bridges, and a hill, an Eiffel tower look alike, a red square and it's the foodie capital of France.

Amsterdam is amazing. It's so so pretty! The Rijksmuseum is perfect for art lovers. I really enjoyed the touristy boat tour and they went into the history with a big helping of humour. Lots of lovely restaurants and cafes. If your daughter is old enough we discovered a bar called The Waterhole where they have live rock/indie bands every night. One night was Rockeoke- karaoke with a live band!

Athens is my place of choice, absolutely gorgeous sunsets and sunrises if you pick the right spot.

Food, entertainment, history, well it is the world's 4th oldest city, the locals are friendly and you can literally walk the whole city to take in the landmarks.

The metro system is super easy to navigate and cheap if you want to head to the coast and chill at the beach

Segrada isn't a cathedral, thats about 3 miles away in the Gothic Quarter (worth a visit, but nowhere near as jaw dropping as Mr Gaudis' little project).

But I have to agree, Barcelona is an awesome place to visit

All of everything mentioned above, I've been to almost all the European capitals and many other cities and all have a lot to offer.

A bit left field, I went to Debrecen last year (got flights for £12.99 return). There's some wonderful art, sculpture and one of the world's most beautiful library's. We got a great service from curators who were chuffed to have someone to show it to.

In the west.

Malaga is a really nice city and easy to get around and easy to get to.

Madrid and Granada are also really good. Madrid can be very cold at this time of year and upto early spring.

Heraklion on Crete is good. Knossos isn't far away, Spinalonga is a bit a way but well worth a visit. Or what about Athens!

On the opposite side, i'll chuck in not going to Sofia, Bulgaria.

Had 4 hours to kill there waiting for a flight- spent the last two of them having a long lunch as it was the most interesting part...unless you really like churches

Sine great recommendations but hard to get to for a short trip.

I’m gutted can no longer fly direct to Granada, one of my favourite places. The caves in Sacromote in the mountain by Al Hambre are now little indie bars with gypsy musicians I think the only City left in Andalusia where you get free tapas with every drink

Take decent footwear! i walked about 12 miles a day and still didn't see everything.

Unless you really crave the view, avoid the restaurants by the tourist attractions, the prices were crazily high! For example, pizza by The Pantheon was €18- same size pizza about 200m away down a side street was €4
