couple, us we him her.

Recommendations for good pubs to eat in please?

Covent garden area

Obviously most are going to pretentious and expensive but if anyone knows of any hidden gems good food, good atmosphere and dare I say not so expensive that I need to sell an internal organ to finance a lunchtime meal.

Please feel free to send us a private message.

Many thanks

Bedford

Very near Holborn station you have Shakespeare's Head Wetherspoon, and then there is another, Cross Keys, I think, near Leadenhall Market/The Shard. It's a Wetherspoon so you know what you're getting, and the prices are very reasonable.

The Porterhouse in Covent garden is awesome. 3 or 4 floors and hundreds of beers to choose from.

And the Maple Leaf, Canadian themed bar.

It's not a pub but Blacklock is a great place to eat and not silly money either. Flat Iron is also good (but not a pub).

+1 for the Porterhouse

Princess Louise is pretty quirky and only a short walk away in Holborn

I wonder how much does it cost for a pint of beer in central London now. I can remember paying £4.95p a pint years ago

Averaging about £6

London ales (pride etc) tend to be cheaper. Avoid peroni lol

There's a Vietnamese Pho restaurant that looks pretty reasonable. I've been looking for a Pho or Korean restaurant myself.

Fiver a pint doesn't seem expensive for London. I was paying over a fiver a pint in my local last night.

Don’t come to London for a cheap pub meal. You pay for quality or being a packed lunch .

Good food and Weatherspoons shouldn’t be mentioned in the same sentence.

Snobbery at its finest.

Your statement is untrue as there are plenty of pubs/ restaurants in central London that serve really good food at really good prices it just depends on whether you go to the pretentious places or not.

Both good choices, especially the Porterhouse, it’s a maze! I’d also throw in the lamb & flag, think it’s one of the oldest in London. Cross Keys is also good.

Just realised you said pub. The Greene King pub food was nice at the Canary Wharf one, and menu looks ok.

I quite like weatherspoons for quick, easy food because They do the smaller portions on most of their meals which is ideal for me.

To be fair, if I was in central london and wanted a good meal I wouldn’t eat in a pub, average / poor roasts / fish and chips for tourists ….. far better to got to one of the abundant amazing restaurants (Chinatown? - not sure if that was what was meant?

Most of the food in Weatherspoons is fried or microwaved. Buying cheap food comes at a cost to farmers and your bodies. Weatherspoons is a cost conscious business. They cut corners and you’re shovelling in crap.

If you want decent quality pub food, there are plenty of quality pubs such as : Green King, assortment of independent pubs across London.

If you come to London why on earth are you seeking a English pub. Plenty of other options in the city.

The Coal Hole, just down on The Strand is a lovely pub, I seem to remember they do a very nice pie and peas type lunch, very passable pub grub and not massively expensive

I’d recommend Waxy O'Connor's if you are literally looking for hidden gem.

There's a pie and mash place just off Carnaby Street, it's not authentic though!

We've eaten in The Wellington a few times, never had a bad meal.

End of the Strand, straight across Waterloo Bridge, not far from The Savoy.

Or keep walking up from Waterloo Bridge into Covent Garden, lots of really nice Italian restaurants just before you hit Covent Garden.

Winston
