On my way home from the STP by train. The best that is available is a chilled tuna mayo roll.

Once upon a time, not that long ago, long distance trains had restaurant cars where real chefs prepared three course meals to order with waiter service on linen tablecloths.

I almost miss British Rail.

I was watching a program the other day that was following a few heritage railways, one of which was providing a full dining experience and I do remember hearing the narator / commentator mentioning that the last full dining car service under British Rail was in 1981.

As of 2018, Great Western Railway was the only UK train operator to provide a full dining Pullman service on selected trains to the west country and Wales

The Severn Valley railway have a fancy restaurant carriage they roll out for special occasions. Looks very swish.

Ended on the East Coast Mainline when GNER went bust in 2007.

Also 50 and I do remember. My mum would make us a pack up as parents refused to pay the extortionate prices but we envied what others were having.

We moaned about BR back then but wow it’s much worse now! And I’m not talking about the strikes.

Virgin used to do a nice three course meal with wine on the computer trains from London KingsX to Newark (and beyond) and fast at 1 hour 10 from London back to the north each day, BR never had anything like that

You still do get hot food (and a menu) on GNER from Newark in 1st class. Transpennie can’t even manage a seat let alone food!

Shit service? That's privatisation cost cutting for you.

It's only really LNER 1st class that's worth while now. GWR did do Pullman dining, not sure if it's still available though. Then there's the various preserved railways around the UK offer fancy dining around the year. Or if you are feeling flush there's the VSOE around London.
