Queen lying in state

Newcastle and Gateshead

I don’t know if I should open a new one.. heck I just have

So I went to the Lying in state in Edinburgh… so glad I did!

As an aside… loads of people from the north east and Cumbria had the same idea as me as it would be easier to get up there than go down to London…

If anyone in the north or Scotland has today off I would still strongly suggest people go…

For those going in London… small bag, bottle of water, comfy shoes

But it was beautiful…

thanks for this Fabio.

Kind of undecided. But it’s a piece of history and the last chance we’ll get. And London is just up the road. So you may have tipped the scales in favour of going.

I’m glad you found it a beautiful thing.

I would like to go to Edinburgh for the lying in state as less busy etc than what it's going to be in London but unfortunately too short notice for me especially considering the distance to Edinburgh. Watched coverage of it on tv though and found it very moving, sad yet beautiful.

While I had never considered seeing her lying in state I am genuinely sad that I won't see her pass by on her way to London later this week. I'd have really liked to have seen the Royal train

Really glad you went and 5 hours really isn't too bad.

I'm wondering if the London queues will be shorter because the reported 20 to 30 hour queues may put many off so may not be as busy as expected.

This thought crossed my mind too but Princess Anne has been staying with the coffin every time it's been moved so following the convoy and surely you wouldn't do that for an empty coffin. Plus members of the Royal family will be and have been taking it in turns to stand vigil with the coffin.

I often wonder this - in reality i am assuming she is already at her final destination and this is purely the 'ceremonial presence'... I often think what if there was a terrorist attempt on the hearse.. Surely she would already be 'safe'?

Floral Tribute by Simon Armitage (Poet Laureate)

"Evening will come, however determined the late afternoon,

Limes and oaks in their last green flush, pearled in September mist.

I have conjured a lily to light these hours, a token of thanks,

Zones and auras of soft glare framing the brilliant globes.

A promise made and kept for life - that was your gift -

Because of which, here is a gift in return, glovewort to some,

Each shining bonnet guarded by stern lance-like leaves.

The country loaded its whole self into your slender hands,

Hands that can rest, now, relieved of a century's weight.

Evening has come. Rain on the black lochs and dark Munros.

Lily of the Valley, a namesake almost, a favourite flower

Interlaced with your famous bouquets, the restrained

Zeal and forceful grace of its lanterns, each inflorescence

A silent bell disguising a singular voice. A blurred new day

Breaks uncrowned on remote peaks and public parks, and

Everything turns on these luminous petals and deep roots,

This lily that thrives between spire and tree, whose brightness

Holds and glows beyond the life and border of its bloom."

I'm not sure she will have been embalmed, there's no need unless a family want to view and protocol seeks to prevent that.

A body doesn't deteriorate much in a week.

Also I suspect in London there is a royal undertaker (they have their own Coroner and doctors), dying in Scotland will have caused a few issues with that and I'm not sure they would have asked a random local firm to do it.

London news showed live footage, it's nowhere near 30 hours at the moment. The thing that slows the pace is the changing of the vigil guard every 20 minutes. Great if you're inside and get to witness that, but a sudden stop for those outside.

I have just watched London local news and the reporter said those at the back of the queue have been warned it could be up to 30 hours. I've literally just heard that reported. The queue is currently down by the national theatre.

Other reports say it could reach 30 hours. The queue will be closed if it reaches 10 miles.

It's currently around London Bridge/Golden Hind and moving steadily at about a mile an hour. That's about 3 to 4 hours of queue, with the stops every 20 minutes.

There's a live queue tracker on YouTube, if you want to experience queuing from your chair.

It's currently showing the queue as 2.6 miles.

The government website are also providing a live tracker of where the back of the queue is so you know where to head for… as of 9.30pm it’s 2.4 miles long and the nearest landmark is Southwark bridge on the southern side

"Oh god I'm dithering again. I can get a ticket on Friday night, retun Sunday night "

Perhaps read some of the threads (Twitter and other places) of people who have done it.

The queue is now about 5 miles long and takes about 9 hours. Once you reach the point where they issue the LISQ wristband you can leave the queue for food, loos, telly interviews etc. and rejoin where you were.

It's likely it will get busier at the weekend as more people travel down to London.

I haven't read anything where someone has regretted doing it, but a lot admit it was harder than they expected.

Good luck making your decision.
