Which the current climate , and people getting pay rises well some people. Me being self employed would it be unethical for me to up my rates slightly. Yes I know everyone is struggling but also so are the self employed

Are you upping your rates due to increases in materials or just because?

If people don’t like your rates they can go elsewhere or try and negotiate.

Are your current rates competitive?

I can't see how you'll survive if you don't but equally it might mean you get less work because people can't afford your rates. You're in an impossible position

I would expect self employed people to need to increase prices to cover the additional cost of living.

However, not everyone is getting pay rises. We had 2% (!) in January 2022 and there will be no further pay review until Jan 2023. We have no additional funds coming in so will have to absorb extra costs with our existing salaries and doubt very much we'll be offered anything like a decent rise in Jan 2023.

Thanks for comments. No it not for materials. I charge labour only. I will get the materials which customer pays for separately for a 10% markup for running around etc. But I usually get them at a good price on account. But yes my labour rates in general. Most work I get through recommendation. And have said to regulars that I may have to up my rates slightly. Not by much. Maybe £10 a day . Which is roughly £200 a month. Not a massive amount . But will help

I think you should pay yourself in line with the increase in living costs. You may find you get fewer jobs as a result but it leaves you with the option to offer a discount for jobs you really want to do.

I’m not struggling at moment. But want to be fair to my customers and myself

This is the issue with accelerated inflation, everyone and everything costs more. Individual pay rises or price increases will cover personal income but ultimately exacerbates the wider problem.

A recession is the natural way for this to me remedied. Sadly that causes it’s own pain

Inflation is now double digit and I don't see with the cost of everything increasing by upwards of 10% how you could continue without increasing your prices?

Personally what I'd do is increase my prices ethically, no extra profit just to retain current levels, and the fact that you asked the question suggests that you too many think that way.

You shouldn't feel guilty about this people will understand and you can't save the world if you don't save yourself first.

You need to earn a living, if costs go up you’ll always need to pass that on but equally you need to stay competitive to get the jobs or you could price yourself out of work
