Horrifically dated shows/movies

I’ve been there too many times where a film I may have enjoyed a decade ago has parts that are horribly dated be it utterly nonsensical references or outdated attitudes.Ir can take me out of the experience sometimes

Anyone else had that experience?

I've recently started watching only fools again and the language used in it is quite shocking. Same with most old comedies, what was acceptable then certainly isn't now.

I used to think Ace Ventura was hilarious, but now remember the final scene where Ace discovers he kissed a trans woman and has to wash himself in the shower for ages out of shame and disgust

I am a huge lover of friends however I have recently started rewatching them and a lot of that is actually really outdated and it doesn't age well.

I still find it very funny, but some of Little Britain is very un-PC. It was at the time, but more so now. I'm glad I bought the DVD because there wouldn't be reruns on Dave etc unfiltered or uncut

Been watching lots of Benny Hill recently and it is so wrong but so very funny. He was a very talented man and the sketches are hilarious.

How can shows not become outdated?

Going back before film and TV using Charles Dickens or Jane Austen as examples the same could be said about literature. I thy things need to be watched or read bearing their original context in mind

Watching something from the 90s and people are smoking and it’s not even the fact that they’re doing it inside; it’s the fact that I don’t know anyone who smokes. Back then I knew what brand everyone smoked.

If you smoked Malboro Red = head

And yet they keep making films/series based on Dickens/Austen/writers of that era

I think it seems old fashioned if it's within living memory and classic if it's not. That's not a criticism

I know. Wish they wouldn't. They are sooooooo fooking boring.

It's just literary snobbery.

Love Crocodile Dundee but the part with the trans woman is very transphobic and a bit of an uncomfortable watch now.

Obviously as previously mentioned, Little Britain, just, crazy looking back.

As to it being a problem, well its all relative to the context, as per usual.

You have to consider the time, the zeitgeist of the population as well as the development of other social norms.

Can it be a little jarring, certainly, however, look at it this way, we've progressed. That's a good thing, and the ability to look back and note this change, but also demonstrate it, is important too.

Is it a good thing or a bad thing, once again that depends on the individual case and the context within which it is considered.

Except Little Britain. Fuck those guys.

Friends is terrible now, they really aren’t very nice people and how they can call themselves friends after some of the things they do to each other is beyond me!

Yes I tend to rewatch from the start periodically on Netflix but as I do more and more of it sits uncomfortably with me.

Only Fools was and still is ace. People being normal. They've cut the p word and a few other bits but it was actually by and large an inclusive show.

Dated is shows populated by middle class whites entirely.

Somewhere In The Ether…

I love watching old films from the 1960’s/1970’s.

The motorways were so clear back then!

And London streets - you could actually cross the road back then; it’s almost surreal!

I am a trans woman , and I still find that scene funny tbh .. its just comical .. the whole film is comical and of its time ... when your trans you need to learn to not take everything so personally .. otherwise life is going to be very hard for you ... comedy pokes fun at all people . religion/size/race /sexuality ....

I love older stuff and to be honest I enjoy the outdated views. It’s comedy and things have changed but why can’t we have a laugh at how things were.

Remember hale and paces Yorkshire airlines sketch? I could be offended by that as I’m a Yorkshireman but I never would be because it’s just a funny piss take. How people seem to look at things these days is way better than it was but we need to appreciate a bit of piss taking too otherwise comedy will die.

Roll on the hateful messages and blocks but I will still laugh at the older stuff. Sometimes because of the lack of education, sometimes because it’s just funny.

Knowing what we know now... any episode of Top of the Pops featuring Jimmy Saville.

How did anyone not notice what was happening to those young women who were bunched around him?

That episode of The Simpsons where they befriend a gay guy and Homer worries that it will turn Bart gay... It still cracks me up, especially the scene with the steel workers, but it's views, depictions and general attitude is very outdated.

Also, many of the episodes of Friends feature some very homophobic moments
