Worst British seaside resort you’ve been to…

Jump to newest

London

We’ve got some lovely places (even if the weather is often poor) but what’s the the absolute worst you’ve been to and why?

My top 3 (in no particular order):

1. Margate - utter dive when I last went (although have heard it’s being done up). Went downhill after Benbon (sp?) brothers shut.

2. Southend - home of the Essex boys films (enough said).

3. Blackpool - have had some good nights out there but it’s full of scratters (have been told to avoid Glasgow week!)

Where are the nice ones, most seem to be pretty grotty but only to be expected I suppose when an awful lot of english folk don't seem to care what sort of a mess they leave everywhere.

Morecambe - we had caravan holidays there when I was little

Rhyl - we went on holiday there once for a change and came home early it was so shite

Wouldn't call it seaside resort...but it's by the coast - newton stewart.

It's dark, with just one main street really with nothing much happening and it rains all the time & gets battered by the irish sea.

Brit Ekland called it the worst place she's been to in her life, after filming some of "the wicker man" there.

-I actually think she's being kind.

Although I love scotland on the whole.

Without doubt it has to be Margate. I went there a couple of years ago with my wife and daughter. It'd been years since I'd been there last and remember loving it as a kid.

We were met upon leaving the station by a gang of fighting alcoholics. Nice. Walking down to the beach it was dirty and littered. So was the beach. The front was full of closed and boarded up shops. The funland theme park was enormously expensive.

I can't be arsed to write much more but, on our way home, we were treated to two junkies fighting over money.

Margate is a shithole. It gives shitholes a bad name.

Another one for Morecambe... absolute dump of a place and you even have to pay to enter parts of the kids play park.

Not a fan of Blackpool either, ripoff.

My favourite beach is actually a local one, Roker, Sunderland. Lovely beach, lots of nice little places in the seafront to get an icecream or something to eat, a couple of playparks nearby and you often see dolphins and seals.

If you mean Happy Mount Park in Morecambe, the things like the swing boats, trampolines, crazy golf etc has always been at a cost. It's local amusement providers who run these things, not the council.

Southend. Many years ago, I booked a hotel on the sea front to attend a friend's 21st birthday celebrations. When I got to the hotel, I realised it was being used as a "halfway house" for single mothers and their kids, and their kids had total control of the place - couldn't get a decent night's sleep!

If that’s the travelodge- it’s not changed. I turned up to a woman sat outside on the floor, on her phone, smoking right next to the air intake vent- with about 5 feral kids running in and out of the hotel

I’d say Blackpool hasn’t had much of a refresh - the hotels on the front all look dated and run down.

We drove through Rhyl yesterday and at least you can see they are investing and trying to update but it’s pretty soulless.

Whilst Skegness gets a lot of stick, it’s another seaside town that’s been updated quite a bit too so they are trying to move with the times.

Cleethorpes hasn’t got much there at all other than the beach.

On the flip side, we went to Llandudno yesterday and it’s seafront and pier are fantastic - the hotels on the front have all been modernised and it looks impressive - still rubbish behind but the front looks great

"On the Welsh coast, Tywyn, Fairbourne and Barmouth. All popular with brummies, all thoroughly grim.

Surrounded by stunning countryside though si not all bad"

The problem with those towns is all the bloody tourists ruin them!

Methinks many people do not appreciate the seaside towns for what they truly are.

If one wants to live the highlife then a typical seaside town in=s not the place to go.

The Georgian architecture of Margate is amazing.

Blackpool has mostly Victorian architecture, and many curios. Away from the South Prom things are nicer.

The beach at Lowestoft is wonderful sand.

Cleethorpes is being regenerated.

Great Yarmouth is indeed a shit hole

Margate (admittedly not been for a while) & Blackpool

Down my way it's perranporth - the town is creepy as fuck & the beach wouldn't make my top 50 of Cornish beaches - the place is overrated beyond belief!

The list of what it once had is extensive.

Sky tower

Illuminations

Monorail

Fairground

Indoor surfing pool

Ornamental Rock Gardens

outdoor swimming pool

boating pool

Pentre Bach model village

Floral Hall

Coliseum theatre,

All these things are now gone.

Mostly replaced with concrete.

Has the little railway around the lake at west end gone as well...?

No. It was the first tourist steam railway ever in Wales, or the UK or somewhere.

It's still chuffing away.

Round the only salt water man made lake in North Wales.

It's quite rare and one of the only jewels left in the crown of Rhyl outside of Spoons. Please don't tell the local council, they're itching to shut it down.

Also best if we don't talk about the Belgian refugees memorial gardens.

What is there…Nothing

All the buildings are eyesores covered in pigeon shit!

There’s no good shops, no good food outlets, no nice pubs

It does have a filthy stinking oil filled harbour, with no points of interest in or on it.

Not a fan of Blackpool either, ripoff.

My favourite beach is actually a local one, Roker, Sunderland. Lovely beach, lots of nice little places in the seafront to get an icecream or something to eat, a couple of playparks nearby and you often see dolphins and seals."

I prefer Seaburn now but Roker is still an amazing beach.

Another vote here for Jaywick, its like a shanty town. Rundown shacks, rubbish, flytipping, druggies, alkies, crims, they rob each other. No matter what time of day or day of the week it is, you're highly likely to get mugged or assaulted. And if you survive that then you can't drive out of there as your car will either be missing some parts or it'll be on fire or its in the sea. Its bigger neighbour Clacton (crackton) isn't much better.

It depends what you want from a seaside town.

Southend is great for things to do and places to eat.

Not great if you don't like crowds or a stony beach.

Worse for me was Skegness, for the donkey poop everywhere and lack of rides and attractions for kids.

It might be better now though as that was years ago.

I loved Leysdown as a kid bit it looks rundown now.
