Worst musician or band (that people might’ve heard of)!

In addition to my best musicians thread, let’s give a shout out to the very worst! that’s not you or your neighbours’ uncle’s cousin’s friend’s cat!

That means someone who, roughly speaking, has or has had some experience in the public eye! It could even be a group who only ever had one famously disastrous gig at the Reading Festival or someone who puts themselves out there as a great musician and is actually a totally talentless fraud!

Name and shame peeps! Gp!

Dare I suggest the infamous Dame Florence Foster Jenkins?

And yes, the film is great but she was for real! The actual recordings of her testify to her absolutely unfathomable ability to sing badly!

Its an intriguing question as its nigh on impossible for a 'talentless fraud' to be successful to a level where people have heard of them. The most glaring attempt being the infamous Milli Vanilli debacle.

However, there are ones that do sneak through occasionally so I'll nominate the band Dogstar who I saw at Glastonbury in 1999 and their USP was their bassist was Keanu Reeves.

So initially the crowd was up for them.

But they played 40 mins of the most out of key, tuneless sub-grunge that they ended up getting bottled off. They just could not play.

I would have to agree with this as most music is manufactured in a studio rather than there being any real talent. Going back slightly if you ever heard Madonna sing without any enhancement the noise was truly awful.

As I’ve mentioned in a previous thread in general for a large proportion of people listening to new music tails off in their late teens to mid 20’s (life gets in the way). So their music tastes get frozen in time so to speak…

Hence why they feel that time is their “golden decade” for music and tend to dismiss what new music is happening at present.

As music tastes are purely subjective the idea of best or worst musicians is actually a bit of a pointless exercise…. Unless they can’t play or sing out of tune….

vampire weekend..prob the worst thing ive even seen and heard..saw them at t in the park and i just stood with my mouth open, they were truely terrible and everyone around me was singing along.it was at that point i thought music had died a little..

its easy to think today that there is no good music ,and for the most part you are right..theres no money to be made in it any more, so the real talent dont bother.also there is so much music being released on a daily basis thats its imposable to find the good stuff.

Never understood why ‘The Smiths’ are regarded so highly. Apart from the song ‘How soon is now’ I think most of their output is about the singer rather than the songs. Now that he’s turned out to be a tosser, I’m now convinced I was right about them all along.

Give me James or New Order over a miserable music, that thinks it’s special.

Ever since multitrack recording was developed in the 1940’s most recorded music is manufactured…. As each individual instrument is laid separately and then the piece is built up in to a whole….. This has not changed but there are now just more tools and technology available to the producers, engineers and more importantly the artists…. So yes studio recorded music is manufactured by definition.

Well I'm no Ellie Goulding fan but...

If you go on YouTube the official video of her singing that song has 111 million views.

The next most popular clip of it has 30 million views, and the next one which is at the BBC has 2.7 million views.

The song got to number 3 in the charts and sold 1.28 million copies.

I just went on YouTube and Google quickly to get these figures but it seems a pretty popular song to me.

No they did last about 35 to 40 mins before the deluge of debris started raining on to the stage. A well aimed orange bass Reeves's bass make a loud THUNK and he just signalled to hos mates enough was enough.

Most of Hip Hop and R&B of today and Pop music. I believe since the mid 2000s only Alt Genres of music (Metal, Punk, Industrial etc) are improving while others forms of music have hit a platu and stagnated. I blame shows like X factor, BGT etc for the lack of creativity in music to be honest

As a musician myself, I find it hard to criticise anyone who is out there doing their art. They might not all be to my taste, but they've all got a talent.

I can only concur with this very correct statement.

Of course people are free to respond however they wish but I have to say it is acutely obvious from the majority of comments above that most people are mistaking acts they simply do not enjoy (again their absolute prerogative not to) with actual lack of talent. They are two completely separate things.

Hey I too cannot stand Coldplay nor U2, just to cite two examples chosen at random, but suggest either act is 'talentless' is simply incorrect. These are highly talented musicians, composers, creators and entertainers.

Such is the cut-throat 'dog eat dog' world of the music industry it is nigh on impossible for someone talentless to exist as professionals.

Whether you like them though is a whole other question... one the OP is not actually asking.

PS - the person who suggested Dogstar is bang on! Keanu Reeves was wise to sticking to acting. Now he is a shite musician!

Interesting comments - oh dear, ‘talent’ - that old chestnut. I deliberately avoided it in the thread heading. In fact, it’s a word I simply never use because I believe it simply doesn’t exist. People become good musicians through good training and dedicated practice. Then they might be noticed and someone who can enables them to have a prominent career as a performer. That’s all! Anyone can do it! This ‘talent’ concept is total BS! It’s the nearest thing a secular society comes to describing a ‘mysterious gift from God’, the alternative description of ‘talent’ which was bandies around in my childhood! No, I fucking practice hard and have a good teacher! Fuck sake! If Bach hadn’t practised hard and studied with Buxtehude, no-one would have ever heard of him and if he’d composed anything it would have been shite!

This thread is not about the talented or untalented. It’s about those con artists who are for some baffling reason have a career when their level of musicianship clearly doesn’t warrant it!

"Its an intriguing question as its nigh on impossible for a 'talentless fraud' to be successful to a level where people have heard of them.

When Milli Vanilli got caught Sting said there are loads in the music industry who don't really sing on their records.

"These days I'd say everything and everyone are awful.

I would have to agree with this as most music is manufactured in a studio rather than there being any real talent. Going back slightly if you ever heard Madonna sing without any enhancement the noise was truly awful.

Most music is manufactured in a studio. Every band uses a producer to tweak things and make it all sound better

There's tweaking and then there's manufacturing.

"

Again no...laying a track down is one thing...totally altering the sound so its nothing like whats been played or sung is manufacturing. Live performances were where you heard great music and still do at smaller venues. Sadly lip synching and click tracks are now used by some less honest bands so again it's basically a manufactured sound rather than raw talent.

Music is totally subjective so you will never get total agreement, I think people who say things like “you don’t like music” because you don’t adhere to their personal taste are the ones out of touch. I personally like rock music, new wave/punk, some other labels but I dislike Rap, Hip hop, reggae, dance, doesn’t mean it’s bad, I just don’t like it.

The Arctic Monkeys. Just come back from Leeds festival and they where the most disappointing headliner/live act I've seen in 25yrs + of watching live music.

Can I just add a second vote for Nicki Minaj - having seen her performances on YouTube: What is she about? No visible musicians, just her mouthing off and screaming verbal diarrhea into a microphone!

It’s not singing so much as screeching a torrent of abusive words at the strangely sycophantic audience!

Two honorable mentions for two legends who certainly are never always legends:

Some of Adele’s singing in concert really does nothing to impress me, when she gets going she’s a bit like a female George Esra - a massive sound that’s uncomfortable for the ears, often not quite in tune and with really dull and moany music!

Some early work of David Bowie is really depressing. There’s a YouTube vid of a young Bowie with a band and him at the piano singing. It’s truly horrendous. He comes across as having an ego the size of Jupiter and the musical ability of a deaf gnat! How he eventually knocked himself into shape as a musician I don’t know but that, and his cringeworthy Christmas duo with Bing Crosby are serious career lowlights!

Fuck me they must have been hard up for people to put through to the next round! He murdered ‘O Sole Mio’ fair and square! I wouldn’t have put him through! Awful voice - a kind of nervous sheep bleat! He holds vast tension in his shoulders so he can’t sing properly anyway - and he goes way off from the backing track! Unlike Morrisey, who has all the charm of a turd sandwich.

Despite being unable to sell out the smallest of arena setups (his ego wouldn’t let him downsize to the more sensible academy size venues), he dictated that nobody in the venue should eat meat and banned it from sale at the food stalls- the crew were also banned (we always brought in pasties as a fuck you that day).

Mate of mine was on back stage security for one show , he was ordered to face the wall whenever Moz-twat came in or out… who then complained that he didn’t open the door for the little turd, to which my mate replied ‘couldn’t see him- was too busy counting bricks in the wall as ordered’

Bohemian Rhapsody ends up in the top X songs of all time pretty frequently. Brian May is in all the top 10/20 greatest guitarists of all time and Freddie's voice was brilliant.

I understand you might not like the songs but to suggest they have/had no talent is a stretch.

"I don't know how anyone can claim Queen didn't/don't have talent.

Dull cliché rock, almost a parody of everything bad about the genre. See lots of references to their live shows, rarely see anyone post about them in the top 5 albums/songs sort of lists- so it’s all about the ‘live’ performance…something Mr Mercury has been lacking for over 30 years

I'm sure Mr Mercury would still be writing and recording music now, if he were alive

And i'm pretty sure I and many others would still be avoiding it like the plague!

Bohemian Rhapsody ends up in the top X songs of all time pretty frequently. Brian May is in all the top 10/20 greatest guitarists of all time and Freddie's voice was brilliant.

I understand you might not like the songs but to suggest they have/had no talent is a stretch.

My son listens to a lot of stuff I don't like but in the majority of cases, I can recognise there's talent behind what I'm hearing.

Where did i say 'no talent'?

i said dull, cliché, parody...you're just making stuff up now "

The thread is about the worst musician or band. Never mind...

"Dare I suggest the infamous Dame Florence Foster Jenkins?

And yes, the film is great but she was for real! The actual recordings of her testify to her absolutely unfathomable ability to sing badly!

I have an LP of hers, which was released in the late 60s. The strange thing is, she believed she was a really good opera singer! She died happy at the age of 76, still believing, bless her."

Absolutely! I have the same recording on cassette tape! With her suffering accompanist, Cosme McMoon!

The second most over rated band in history, in my opinion is Oasis. The most over rated band being The Beatles.

Queen, Madness, meatloaf... in no particular order.

Nobody can argue because everyone has their own opinion don't they. It wouldn't do for us all to like the same things.

No arguments that's a pretty decent 3 to be fair

I can listen to most stuff, but I always turn the radio down when either of those 2 are playing... I do think John lennon was brilliant though.

"Interesting comments - oh dear, ‘talent’ - that old chestnut.

I understand what you are saying about mediocre musicians who have hidden away and the angle you are trying to come from so I of totally respect that.

But to suggest 'talent' does not exist is ludicrous. Its like trying to argue love doesn't exist.

Where it comes from, how it manifests and how the hell you measure I completely agree is a non-starter. I'm certain its not 'God given' as I've been a pro musician since I was 18 and have played and worked with many talented people and often the most talented are among the repugnant and horrible twats I've had the misfortune of meeting. It's not divine!

Again you are correct it is possible to spend hours and hours honing your skill at playing your chosen instrument. Practice does not make perfect... but it helps!

But as far as creativity goes, the spark or whatever it is that creates those killer melodies or movements or riffs that resonate with so many people.

Again the point has to be made that only certain people do get the exposure that lifts them into the public psyche. And that is a whole post unto itself. But there is many examples of these driven, natural songwriting and composing creators that often turn up at band practice or whatever with their latest piece literally finished. Its done. All it needs is recording so millions and millions and millions can hear it too.

"Anyone can do it" you say. Yes, to some extent they can. But only to a certain level. Only a select few can do it at a level so far in advance of the 'norm' that they stand out. The same phenomena occurs in literature, art, sport, dare we even say politics. Anyone can run a marathon but I dare suggest that no matter how much training you and I do there is no way we are going to clock 2 Hours 2 Minutes and break the World Record. It takes a unique talent to do that.

Ok, you prefer not to call it 'talent' but - whatever name you wish to pin on it - it is most definitely there. And the ones that are heralded as the most 'talented' often (not always, never always) seem to do it the easiest.

PS - Great post by the way, fascinating subject!

"These days I'd say everything and everyone are awful.

Obviously you're not into music. "

But, that's the problem, I AM into music. Yes, I was generalising, but I was talking about the state of pop music, not all music. A recent study has confirmed that music is starting to sound the same. They studied a shit ton of popular artists, genres, albums etc. and found that it's become simpler over time. It's becoming homogenised.

Research carried out by The Medical University of Vienna in Austria studied 15 genres and 374 subgenres. They rated the music's complexity over time using values like timbre and acoustical variation. They then compared that to the genre's sales. They found that in nearly every case, as genres increase in popularity, they also become more generic. Their conclusion was that,"as music becomes increasingly formulaic in terms of instrumentation under increasing sales numbers, due to a tendency to popularize music styles with low variety and musicians with similar skills."

I remembered the general points but had to look up the details. There is no room for creativity in pop music any more. It doesn't sell. The stuff that does sell is so bland and generic it may as well be the same song played over and over again.

Was that the medical or musical university.? Either way it's interesting, sort of makes sense. X factor throat singing, melisma and auto tuned voices are the diet. We like easy beige flabby music.
