We all watch sitcoms for a bit of light hearted relief but every once in a while the bastard decide it's a good idea to hit you right in the feels.

Are there any moments in sitcoms you find particularly sad or gut wrenching that makes your heart drop?

Will’s dad always gets me. Anyone who says he can’t act just needs to watch that scene.

Jim is a grumpy old bastard. But he’s a family man . And I totally relate to the whole scenario. Reminds me of my own experiences growing up. Think this is why it’s so loved

If cartoons can be included...the scene in Futurama where Fry's dog waits outside a deli for Fry to return..through season after season ..through snow and winds..with a song playing something like "I will wait forever"...with Fry's voiceover saying " I bet he forgot me a long time ago"

Diverging away from sitcom to sketch show.

Mitchell and webb did a scene depicting sherlock Holmes with dementia, which is a dark subject to play for laughs.

Near the end Holmes has a moment of lucidity that's heart wrenching

You beat me to it. Henry I mean, but Radar as well. Can't remember, was it the helicopter, or his plane that went down? I think it was his plane, but more than happy to be corrected.

May I add:

Chandlers plea to Erica to allow them to adopt her baby “she’s a mother without a baby”

Mash - the noisy “chicken” that was actually a baby

Don't know if Bojack Horseman counts as a sitcom but that "Sarah Lynn?" as the end credits roll always gets me.

Also the episode where he goes back to his family's old house and their history plays out and you witness their lives gradually fall apart while he fixes the house up.

God, what I thought was going to be just an adult cartoon turned into one of the most beautifully written shows of the decade...

Totally agree, the wonderful writing of Aherne & Cash. My own Nana came from Manchester & so much rings true about the show to her mannerisms & sayings & false poshness lol. I cry everytime without fail on this episode, it's a heart breaker.

If we start including soaps and dramas the list becomes endless! Grey's Anatomy definitely amongst the worst for me though. Derek's death, O'Malley's death, O'Malley helping Bailey through labour, Kepner's first baby. Nah that whole TV show is just a train wreck emotionally!

The last one I can think of is the last episode of Neighbours at the street party

Susan's monologue as you spot characters new and old in the background and all the "dead" people back and having fun like Madge + Hendrix and even Finn.

I'm filling up just thinking about it being a fitting ending.

But, I’m just going through Scrubs right now and there’s a couple of scenes in there that made me feel like I had something in my eye.

Dr Cox talking to his best mate Ben who’s died.

Dr Cox again, just after he’s loses 3 transplant patients in the space of a couple of hours, and he takes it really personally.

I remember watching it when we covered the first world war in history and it really does hit the feels, apparently it wasnt meant to be as heart wrenching when they filmed it but when they watched it back with the audio and effects over it they decided to leave it as was to honor those that never made it home.

Technically not a sitcom but yeah Derek has all the feels moments. The dog episode is a killer, especially when Kev makes him one at the end. Also when he gets out the car and runs towards his dad, absolutely kills me!

That episode of Scrubs and watching him have a breakdown is gut wrenching.

I don't think Scribs gets the recognition it deserves as a program it was brilliant.

Derek and Afterlife had some real tear jerk moments. Ricky Gervais is an exceptionally empathic and compassionate writer.

I'll also say Scubs, there were some truly thought provoking and moving episodes.

Agreed, I think it’s a cracking show. Very quirky at times, but has a lot of human emotion stories in there too.

So poignant, never fails to grab me!

Along with a group of like minded ex colleagues, I've done a lot of battlefield trips to France and Belgium, where they're still finding bodies. Part of me almost wishes that they find his, and those of Baldrick, George (St Barleigh) and Darling.

I know it was fictional, but seems so in keeping with actual footage of the battles!

See Derry Girls is a "silly show for late teens", and it works cause its shit you can imagine seeing and going through as a teen and relate to it. Then it hits you with that and it's still real.

I was 8/9 when the Omagh bombing happened and the Good Friday Agreement, still with friends and family over there. Remember it well enough from that perspective.
