Not all that North of North London

If I'm walking/running/cycling on trails then I acknowledge everyone as it's a little out the way. If they have a friendly dog I'll stop and play with the dog and apparently you have to speak to the human with the dog in those situations so I reluctantly do. No dog and they only ever get a hello, no chance I'm stopping

Regularly, especially in supermarkets as they are the only places these days where I regularly bump into strangers. It's surprising how many women do respond to a smile and eye contact.

Aye, if I pass them on a walk to the park, or we’re in a queue at the Post Office (mainly old ladies )

I’m a country boy and in the village I grew up in everyone said hello it was the normal thing to do.

I remember leaving home for the first time to go to Uni and in the big city people used to keep their heads down and ignore me or look at me like I was a mad man if I said hello to anyone I passed! That was a big eye opener at the time.

Reply privatelyReply in forumReply +quote

By (user no longer on site)

Yes - I inherited this from my Father who always chatted to people he saw.

Now I live in France I do it every day - it’s expected in a small rural town.

We say Bonjour Madame/Monsieur to people when they pass in the street and if you go in a shop it’s expected to say it to the staff and cashier. If you are in a queue then it’s expected that you say it to the others queuing and also if you enter a cafe or bar then to everyone else. And of course Merci/ Bonne Journée when finished.

Even school children will greet you in the same way.

I think it’s lovely and for some people it may be the only time they speak to someone if they live alone.
