And I don't mean your fab username.

If you wanted to change your surname officially how do you go about choosing a new one?

What you pick can come across more fancy than you are or worse.

I've pondered this for ages, and I'm still stuck.

Would you go down family lines till found one you liked or be completely different so there's relation. Or just use a random name generator and be done with it?

Choose whatever you want, using whatever method you want. But go for something memorable, that people will also be able to spell. Like Roger Mee.

I changed mine a few years ago. I chose a double barreled one. One is because I think it sounds posh and I always wanted that name. The other one was my nickname so it's a bit silly. But together, they sound good.

My previous surnames were really boring so I didn't want them.

That made me giggle.

Maybe the way forward is to get someone else to choose it.

Max Power, he's the man whose name you'd love to touch

But you mustn't touch, his name sounds good in your ear

But when you say it, you mustn't fear

'Cause his name can be said by anyone.

- paper

- pen

- specific words including your old and new name

That is it...

And don’t pay anyone who claims they can do it for you!! It’s free apart from the final registration I believe

There is only a charge if you want to register it with the courts, which is not necessary for 95% of things you would want to do.

You can even change your passport without an enrolled deed poll

You do sometimes need to go via deed poll !

It’s a right pain! I changed from my old married name to current married name & kept my maiden name also

Complete ballache as the marriage cert isn’t enough to support the maiden name part

Change it to whatever your current licence plate is on your car.

Waaaaay cheaper than buying a personalised plate.

For clarification, both forms of name change are a Deed Poll

The difference is if it is enrolled or not.

Unenrolled is what I described earlier, and enrolled is when it is registered with the royal courts which involves a fee.

Some things need it enrolled, most do not. so look into it.

Enrolled isn't a huge expense though (£42.44 at time of writing)

Easy to change. Not so easy to notify all the banks, utilities providers, insurers and everything else you subscribe to..

Yes, this exactly. Sorry, I didn’t elaborate

It’s the enrolment part - that’s the bit I didn’t bother with! Utilities & bank etc are easy enough

Unenrolled can be done with 1 signature - simply put your details into freedeedpoll.org.uk and it prints all the correct legalese you need. This has been enough for me to change bank details, drivers license, passport... hasn't been rejected anywhere yet!

And for other advice on name changes have a look up gender construction kit. Great checklist of who you have to inform, ideas for names etc.

Final piece of advice.... print at least 3 of the things, else you'll be waiting months for it to come back from the DVLA, the passport office... just saves on time! I had most of my stuff done with a month this way
