"Am I the only one that gets irritated when I see a badly spelt word, or wrong use of basic language? I don't want to be a grammar nazi, but sometimes I can't help myself." Makes you wonder how humans evolve.

Fair enough if it’s illegible but if someone’s missed a coma out or a minor spelling mistake I really can’t get worked up by this. Life’s too short

"Am I the only one that gets irritated when I see a badly spelt word, or wrong use of basic language? I don't want to be a grammar nazi, but sometimes I can't help myself." Getting irritated is natural and I think anyone who cares about their education does at times. I only think it ever becomes a problem if it is acted upon in a negative way.

Not spelling correctly or using grammar does not mean someone doesn't care about their education. Nor does it mean anyone that doesn't get irritated by it doesn't care about their education. "Am I the only one that gets irritated when I see a badly spelt word, or wrong use of basic language? I don't want to be a grammar nazi, but sometimes I can't help myself." Language and spelling evolves as we’ve been told here in the past. Soon phrases like wot u 2 up 2 will be the norm.

"I dislike it, but this site is a place to let it slide." Why should we let it slide? I totally understand typos and wrong autocorrect (I get those too) as well as dyslexia. What I don't like especially are those who are able to word, spell and punctuate a decent message, but get lazy and include "how r u" in it somewhere.

Absolutely not just you, OP. Bad spelling and bad grammar both wind me up on here. I hate txt spk too, really grinds my gears! I did obsessively check over that message to make sure I didn't fall foul of either myself. That would be awkward..

I very much mean in public and on the forum - we're discouraged from picking on it and it often ends badly when people do. "I'm dyslexic and partially deaf. I was disruptive in school so had to attend an educational unit. I left school with one GCSE in visual education. As a young adult I went back into education and got a "B" in English as well as a handful of other arty ones. Got an "A" in my A level textiles which I did in 6 months. When I had my daughter I took ESOL classes to try and get my head around basic grammar. My head retains such pointless information yet certain things will not stick. Maths is a prime example of that. I actually get physical pains if I'm forced to do anything other than very basic maths. I now work in education with very young kids that have special educational needs. I see how some people struggle learning on a daily basis. Posts like this do piss me off. Especially when most of the people that are "the grammar police" are obviously on the Autistic spectrum. I understand it might be difficult for you to empathise with others but you don't have to put them down or ridicule them. The rest are just smug cunts who despite banging on about "The forums are a community" do love their self elevated status. I've had so many threads fucked up because people find it more entertaining to pick out typos and bad grammar. " I often read regarding other disrespectful issues, that it's 2022, like that means this kind of attitude should now be eradicated. You'd think by now, people would recognise that it can be a learning difficulty or due to a bad upbringing, as examples. I remember as a child, my Gran asking me to take a written note to my Uncle, she asked me to say nothing to suggest I know, and explained be struggles to read and so will I please read it to him. I did that and to this day he doesn't know. He is though, an an amazing builder, amongst other things, and a very caring, understanding Man. Personally, I find a bad attitude much more a turn off than bad grammar.

"I find it a lot more annoying when people feel the need to point out others spelling mistakes on here, especially when it's done as a put down to that person. It's not big or clever it just makes you look sad and pretty pathetic. I saw a man post on the forums quite a while ago asking for help, he struggled with writing down what he was trying to ask. A lot jumped straight on the band wagon with the smart comments about how he spelt words wrong and how he couldn't articulate what he wanted to say.All of these people thought they were funny and witty and were 'educating' this guy when in fact they were just being cockwombles. Funnily enough a lot of them post on the be kind threads as well . So no someone's spelling doesn't bother me as I understand people can have issues like dsylexia or English is not their first language .It does not mean they are uneducated like some on this thread has even suggested. Some people I know who may not be able to write things down well on paper are some of the most intelligent people I have known. " thank you JustBo xx

We had a high number of dyslexic people in my Physics A Level class. My ex partner was also almost intimidatingly intelligent and ended up becoming a software programmer for banks but he was quite severely dyslexic. I'm mildly dyslexic and often have to Google words as I'm typing. I can totally understand why those who have it more severe don't bother as it would take forever to type anything. To those who say "autocorrect exists" I'm sure we all know how imperfect that is. It also doesn't pick up grammatical errors and sometimes you spell something so badly that autocorrect draws a blank. Also if you spell something wrong enough times, sometimes your phone adds it to the suggestions .

" xx

"Am I the only one that gets irritated when I see a badly spelt word, or wrong use of basic language? I don't want to be a grammar nazi, but sometimes I can't help myself." Not everyone on here or out there is English or comes from a English speaking country. Speaking English fluently or spelling words correctly is not a tool to measure a person's intelligence.

"There are too many people who don't know the difference between to, too and two !! Also there, their and they're!! It's basic flipping english !! " I know it is. And I still struggle at 46, and passed/past. Where were wear etc. I always struggled with which (that’s another one) to use. I didn’t reach a good mark at gcse level. But to read ‘basic English’ makes me feel like I’m back at school and the smart kid is making others feel stupid.

I got straight A*s and As at GCSE apart from English where I got a B. I still struggle with words with loads of vowels in and often have no idea what order they go in. So that’s how you spell whether. . See, some people just took a little longer. But it’s the Basic English that just doesn’t stick for me. Rather than get angry over spelling, I’m getting wound up over people thinking their grasp on very good communication using good grammar and spelling as a way to make others feel less than them. I think I’m Clever enough to decipher what people tried to say. Like - I want to find it easy to read something because I am lady to think.

"If a person can grasp the use of good English, yet struggles to understand a lesser degree. Which one is the more stupid, the one that types to a lesser degree but can understand basic English, or the one that uses good English but can't understand that of a lesser degree?. Personally, I can understand/decipher both, of course there are extremes either way, but does this make me better? Am I to look down upon those that can't work it out? I'm looking at you 'Smarter than thou' types. " OP didn’t say that he looked down on people who mangle the English language, he said it irritates him. I don’t see where he says he was smarter than anyone either. In a lot of cases, my guess is that people simply can’t be arsed getting things right.
