I do wonder when you see comments like this, if people have actually met and visited with the many decent North Americans.

Like many Countries its flawed but its an amazing place if you don't have a negative bias. Everywhere can be if you see beyond populist views.

Also American sport is weird to us.

Incredibly poor social care, health care, employment rights, disgustingly low minimum wage - essentially a shit place to live unless you’re wealthy.

And now - a country that’s turned women into second class citizens - effectively removing them from the job market - good jobs at least.

Effectively a third world nation.

Hi lovely. My beef isn’t with the American citizens - not those who value people above guns and care enough about others to want a decent healthcare system and women’s rights anyway.

My beef is with an intrinsically corrupt system that is constantly perpetuated as Americans seem to be brainwashed into believing their way is best.

Hence

40 000 American citizens file for medical bankruptcy each year - something unheard of in other countries

A minimum wage that hasn’t increased in 40 years in many states - resulting in people who work full time earning so little that they have to live in tents - thousands upon thousands of them (also unheard of in other developed countries)

A judicial system warped against the poor who have to ‘plea’ if they can’t afford a decent lawyer to avoid a very hefty sentence - hence the largest prison population per capita in the world.

The lowest right to annual leave in the developed world.

Appalling maternity rights

No free medication - not even for children.

People being sent home to die because their health insurance has run out.

Little or no help towards childcare for working parents.

An aggressive police force.

Essentially the us appears to be owned by Corporations, gun lobbyists and religious extremists. The ‘average’ US citizen appears to have little or no say in how the country is run.

My biggest concern is that if the Republicans win the next election they’ll skew the voting laws etc to make it impossible for the democrats to win an election again.

From an outsider’s point of view - this outsider anyway - democracy in the US is extremely precarious right now.

The Judges who overturned Roe v Wade have made no secret of the fact that they wish to limit rights to contraception and overturn LGBTQ rights. Some schools already are.

Again - I have no beef with the average American citizen - I’m just bloody glad I don’t live there.

Rich white men sending poor, predominantly working class young men to defend their interests abroad has been the way of all civilisations in human history, I'd warrant.

What a country.

Welcoming, friendly people.

Big country made for great driving holidays.

Guns? Most people there don't own one and of those that do who aren't criminals, they're as responsible as the people that I know here who own one for shooting.

It's very sad to see how swayed people are by the negative media about that wonderful country. Spend 6 months there and you'll have a different view of the place and its people.

Of my post, you highlighted 'guns'. As you've pointed out, "3%". I'd say that rather proves the point that most American's don't own guns, wouldn't you say?

"1-Shite quality in food. 2-How dumb the average American is. 3-How loud and annoying your average American is. 4. The stupidity of the gun laws! 5-That so many of them voted for Donal Trump thinking it was a good idea!

I do wonder when you see comments like this, if people have actually met and visited with the many decent North Americans.

Like many Countries its flawed but its an amazing place if you don't have a negative bias. Everywhere can be if you see beyond populist views."

I have been to America three times. The food quality is very poor. I did meet some nice Americans and I have several American friends. But generally, it's not a great place and it is overrated. my opinions are valid even if they are wrong or even right-each to their own

Read it again. It doesn’t say only 3% of Americans own a firearm

It says 3% own 133 million firearms

For clarity it’s estimated American citizens own 265 million firearms, about 30% own one, removing under 18’s and those in retirement homes, about 60% of the rest own a firearm.

Statistics are just that; they can be utilised to fit the occasion. In your case, you've chosen to remove certain demographic of the population, which is rather odd for an entire nation. "Most American's"; when did the demographics you have listed become non-Americans?

It wasn't lost on me what you said about the 3%, which is my point. That 3% own more than half the weapons.

As I've said, statistics can be made to fit whatever opinion we choose to have.

In honesty though this thread went way off what I was expecting.

I’ve been over a good few times and enjoyed every minute of each time I’ve been there.

Only once did I have an altercation in south beach but every other person I met was absolutely brilliant, From gig venue suggestions to peaceful places, they were always happy to help. I can’t wait to get back over again hopefully further north and eventually the west coast

To be fair the majority of news we hear from America is shooting after shooting. Most of the other stuff doesn’t reach us so a lot of opinions are based on this.

Also American sport is weird to us."

You know the diversity though. I will open my door to anyone in need. It depends on people not the nation. But UK just reads what the media tells them to believe and that is set in stone in their minds.

Being a Brit who has lived here for 4 years and had 50 years of media fed information on the USA prior to that (ok I wasn’t watching the news at birth but you get the point) my views on here as a resident are much different than the image portrayed by that media.

Just as I am having to spend time correcting Americans on their media driven views on the UK all the time.

Opinions are great but more valid if real time is spent in either country not just a fortnight with Mickey every year.

Oh I miss saying fortnight!

I find it strange that there seems to be this idea that the only two options are living there or consuming the national media of an external country.

Many people have countless friends all over the globe, they travel themselves for extended periods. They consume media and knowledge from countless different sources.

But that all get lost in the assumptions of the 2 listed options.

I have family and close friends in 24 states, it may not be a personal knowledge but it is a very broad view of the country from reliable sources.

When I talk in a conversation on the states it is incredibly rare it is based on media, but rather what these people tell me.

"Nation of mongrels, pigs of the world no thought for anyone but themselves, and I'm sick of hearing about this special relationship.made a fortune out of lend and lease during war and they could have come in on either side there choice of common language was English or German!!!"

I’m sorry you feel the way you do but believe me when I say, I respect your opinion.

I however am not a mongrel, a pig or a self absorbed American, I am a human being.

My ancestors were a proud people from the Cherokee nation and they were driven off their land.

In the early 1800’s, over 100,000 native American men, women and children were forcibly marched over 1000 miles under deplorable conditions. They were also forced to live, against their will, on reservations in Oklahoma established by the Government. Their land, possessions and freedoms were taken away and many died from smallpox and starvation.

So before you say we have no history, may I suggest you read Trail of Tears: The Rise and Fall of the Cherokee Nation by John Ehle, or An American Betrayal: Cherokee Patriots and the Trail of Tears by Daniel Blake Smith. Maybe it’ll give you a better idea of just some of the history of America.

The Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Creek, and Seminole have a history and none of them had a choice. Give that some thought…..
