Autism and Safe Foods

Any other fellow autistics had a safe food that suddenly got discontinued?

I had a favourite ASDA salad, and it was literally the only thing I would eat for weeks, and now it’s gone! Ripped away from me! Or, at least it hasn’t been in any of my nearest stores for weeks.

Do you have a safe food? Even if you aren’t autistic, I think we all have safe foods!

Asda seem to be doing this a lot at the moment.

My Safe vegan spread ( im lactose free) at 90p for 50ogm has been discontinued.

It's closest replacement is £1.85 for 250gm.

I'm not impressed

I have some textural issues with food. The flip side is I have certain things that the texture of makes me super happy and some of them have been discontinued

I even messaged them on Twitter and they said ‘we don’t know what you’re talking about’ even though I sent them a picture of the tag!! Ridiculous

They have so many seasonal things it's untrue...

Thankfully my safe food is mash. I'm pretty much able to find that anywhere.

I'm autistic, food isn't one of my issues, but it's really jarring when this happens with stuff that bothers me. I'm sorry.

Waitrose recently changed the recipe of one of their premade wraps, tastes very different now and am very sad. Hoping its a bad batch but it doesn't look like it

It turned out for the best, but I was devastated when the took Monster Assault off the shelves, I was drink 3-4 cans a day.

It has since come back, but I managed to find another drink that wasn't nearly as bad to replace it in the mean time

I'm autistic too, but don't have food anxieties really. The only thing that upsets me food-wise is when a cafe changes the menu and I can't order what I planned to have when I walked in. It can really put a dampener on the rest of my day.

Steak and eggs.

Has to be grass-fed and pasture-raised though. The chucken have to be fed proper food as well and none of the GMO soy and GMO corn feed that is a cancer on the food system and my guts.

Mines not food, its cat litter. I get the ultra clumping one from Sainsburys because I can just remove the poo and pee clumps easily and there is minimal odour. They now started producing a bigger bag of supposedly ultra clumping litter but it was a lesser quality. The original size one has returned to the shelves but has been repackaged and is just the same as the new stuff.

I have house cats and am sensitive to smells. Just wished they hadn't fucked with the original litter.

I'm Autistic and massively dyslexic. Food isn't something that bothers me at all. My inability to use grammar and punctuation bothers me massively. Also My biggest concern is not understanding certain questions and social ques. It makes me feel stupid

My elder daughter is autistic and food has been a problem for years (throw in an eating disorder for good measure). Texture and taste have to be right. The issue we've had previously is that she'll find something she likes, will only want that, but then gets to a point that she's sick of it, then we have to find something else. She's much better now, with a wider variety of foods, but still doesn't like the taste or texture of meat.

I beg your pardon but I must ask about your being "massively dyslexic". Your post is not only perfect in your spelling but near perfect in grammar and punctuation also. How do you do this? Is it from practice or do you use a tool to help with it?

Not all that North of North London

I only found out I was autistic last year and have always had massive issues around food.

I hate it when something disappears or isn't available, it's crap. The milkshake shop I used to go to closed down so I just dint have milkshakes anymore

Ajd my poor partner if she wants to try somewhere new has to really coax me in and convince me it will be okay!

I feel for you. Not to the extent that's it's all I will eat. But there has always been specific food items I've had a passion for/loyalty to and a unusual over interest in exploring all the facts about product and the company that makes it.

An example of food products I had an strange attachment to that don't exist now is Chef beans and Sausage in those unusual kind of in-between size red tins.

It's only in recent years (thanks to My Girl) I realised there were reasons for some of my strange foibles and social difficulties. Not that it changes much for me, I'm just me.

I don’t grown food attachments thank god.

But I will not try certain foods and cannot be persuaded to try them. Which is a shame as I know fish and more vegetables would be good for me.

But my stupid brain will not let me. Go figure.

It's so disheartening and demotivating as a mother. My autistic teen is getting worse and worse where food is concerned - she also uses food as a control tool.

I know exactly the phases you're talking about - but am currently finding that she's limiting more and more foods rather than progressing!

I have 2 children and they are two complete ends of the spectrum in every which way! They enjoy different foods so I nearly always end up cooking a variety of different stuff so that all tastes are catered for, then use those leftovers the following days. Forget doing stuff like lasagnes, stews, casseroles, soups - anything in sauce or mixed is a no, no. It's always separates - meat, veg, carbs but she'll only eat certain ones - very, very restrictive. And there's no way she'll eat anything when visiting anywhere either. I actually had to cut a visit to family at Christmas short this year because she was throwing up, she was so grossed out (and she didn't actually spend time at the dining table)!!!

Whereas I feel so sorry for anyone - especially my child - to have those difficulties, she has my heart broken and my head wrecked (never mind all the other trials and tribulations which go hand in hand having a child with different needs)!!! Still complaining about food when I put so much effort into working with her needs . For that reason, I hate cooking with a vengeance.

To some extent. But the trouble is when your dyslexic predictive text sometimes brings up the wrong words but you assume it's right spelling for the word your trying to use. Can make you look like a right tit at time.

My phone seems to remember the words most frequently used and also what word is most likely to follow. Often after a few words i can write a sentence with minimal touching of letters on the keyboard all predictive

Tell me about it.

Also things like lose and loose. How am I meant to know which is the right one.

For me it's predictive text, with the grammarly keyboard.

Punctuation is handled by thinking about how I'd say what I'm typing. If it's a little pause for breath it's a , if it's a longer pause a .

If I have to think for a moment it's a new paragraph. It isn't fool proof, but it got me through my degree!

I have autism, I don't have safe foods as such but do like certain textures food wise.

Social interaction is where most of my problems lay.
