"One of my old girlfriends from secondary school has messaged me out of the blue, saying she's coming back to the UK to live after living in America for 22 years she just upped and left with her mum without a word to me.she has a 18 year old son now,she wants me to help her find a car etc.i don't know what to do I,what do you guys think I should do.do I trust her or not I'm not sure " I'm assuming there's been no contact in the last 22 years? Seems a tad odd that odd that someone would get in touch with an old school flame to try and source a car and whateber 'etc' may be....but it's just as odd to ask a website full of random strangers who don't know you, her or anyone else involved what to do! Go with your gut instinct. Unless you think that by helping her you may get in the good books and rekindle your old romance....in which case just crack on! A

"Find the car when she is due and she can go and pay for it. I did suggest that to her but she wasn't keen on the idea she wants me to pay for it" Just no. Hadn't seen this detail when I previously posted. But it's no different to any of those scam emails/texts with a sob story looking for some mug to chuck them some free cash. Cut contact with her immediately. I doubt she's even heading back to the UK A

"Find the car when she is due and she can go and pay for it. I did suggest that to her but she wasn't keen on the idea she wants me to pay for it" You tell her no. It’s as simple as that. Anything else and you’d be a fool.

"Find the car when she is due and she can go and pay for it. I did suggest that to her but she wasn't keen on the idea she wants me to pay for it" That sounds very dodgy. Why does she want you to pay for it? What else does she want you to pay for? Don't forget there will be the tax and insurance to cover as well.

"Find the car when she is due and she can go and pay for it. I did suggest that to her but she wasn't keen on the idea she wants me to pay for it" I wouldn’t do that for most of the people I speak to on a regular basis, never mind someone who lives 3000 miles away and just popped up after a quarter decade

It's a scam. Use your brain. A

"Find the car when she is due and she can go and pay for it. I did suggest that to her but she wasn't keen on the idea she wants me to pay for it" I think you know the answer, OP. You shouldn't buy her a car. That's a very odd request for anyone to make of a near stranger (I assume you've not been close over the last 22 years?)

"She's not your problem. Ypu owe her nothing and the whole thing sounds suss as hell. If my ex from 27 years ago contacted me out of the blue to buy her a car I'd tell her were to go. You are being scammed. What sort of sane person asks someone they've not spoken to in over 22 years to buy them a car? " When she messaged me she never asked how I was or what I've been doing at all it was all about her and her mum coming back to the UK to get medical treatment off the NHS and would I get her a car,I just didn't know if I should trust her and you guys have helped me out a great deal as I don't have anyone else to ask and imagine if I did help her id be stupid idiot as usual

Who knows what she wants. I wouldn’t get involved. Surely there are family members that can help her find a car. What for example if you find a car and she buys it and it turns out to be a wreck? Perhaps she doesn’t have all the cash. I’m always suspicious of people that get in touch after so long, merely to ask you to do something for them.

Why didn’t she have the relevant cover in America?" She won't be entitled to it and most hospital systems should hopefully flag it up, especially if she struggles to provide an address and GP details. 150% of the cost too.

"Has anyone suggested it may not be her at all and just a scam? Wife had an "old friend" contact and all nice, sounded interesting, then conversation got a little off. She flagged it with me. I said ask a question that only she knew the answer to - "what was that pub we always went to?" or "where did we actually see each other last". Never heard another word!" That's a good point.
