Question Why did football traditionally kick of at 3pm ?

"Question Why did football traditionally kick of at 3pm ? "

The reason behind the 3 pm kick-off is all to do with the Factory Act. Introduced in 1850, the law aimed to improve worker's rights. It could have never been known how it would shape the future of society. Not only would it turn football into a significant sport, but it would also dictate the time it was played

Craggy Island

The 3pm blackout, which has been in place since the 1960s, prohibits matches being shown between 2:45pm and 5:15pm in order to protect attendances throughout the football pyramid. In Uefa territories, “Article 48” dictates that on a Saturday or Sunday, there must be a period when no live football can be shown on TV.

Craggy Island

The Factory Act passed a law that stopped companies from keeping employees any later than 2 pm on a Saturday, allowing workers more recreational time. However, many Churches were concerned workers would turn to drink and spend their newfound freedom at the pub. Alternatively, churches called for workers to find another way to spend their time and encouraged them to set up football clubs. This is ironic considering how drinking is such a huge part of football.

Playing at 3 pm was considered a suitable time to give workers the chance to leave and make their way to the game. As there were few means of transport back then, most people opted to support the team that was within walking distance. As there was little else to do on a Saturday afternoon, a good portion of the local communities would be in attendance too

""And so it comes to this our final home game in the football league 115 years of league history ends not with a bang not with a fight but a whimper from the club who have now reverted to type making it near impossible for fans to gain entry .no pay on day tickets off sale 6pm last night with only 48 hrs notice given no alcohol sales within the stadium sections off the stands netted off no banners or flags allowed with body searches on entry would probably be easier to get into hmp Forrest bank .will be there at 2pm to protest and make my feelings known to the gutless clowns who have brought this about no doubt as per the last five games non of the board or any of thier hangers on will grace us with thier presance .come 3pm I will make the walk up sheepfoot lane for the last time untill they are gone from this club .50 years of joy despair elation frustration humour delight comraderie & rivalrys gone destroyed by a bunch of nobodys in 4 years . #Abdalahout #timetogoAl&Mo #saveoafc

Quote Edit Report

Feel so sorry for yourselves and others.

Boundary Park is undoubtedly the coldest football ground on the planer, but also one of the best.

Loved the atmosphere there, used to be decent beer.

You have my sympathy and best wishes for a speedy return to the 92thank you to you and others it's no longer hurts now we are just angry angry that it has come to this a proud club brought to its knees by incompetent owners and self interested hangers on meanwhile the EFL just waffle on about thier fit and proper persons test that one of the two owners failed before his brother bought it for him allowing him to take up the role of "sporting director" sack 14 mangers in four years bring in inumerable substandard players from abroad and alienate as much of the fanbase as possible .on a side note you want cold try Gayfield park Arbroath on a January Tuesday night with the wind whipping off the northsea 150 yards from the touchline ! "

Agree again.

Our Chairman isn't exactly a likeable guy, he's a PR disaster and his league chairmen don't really like him too.

But.....we're still afloat (just)....."

Boundary Park IS one of the coldest stadiums in the FL. But so is whatever Bolton Wanderers call the Reebok nowadays (it's a wind tunnel!) and Blackpool FC on a snowy Boxing Day, before they refurbished the ground, was fucking perishing

True but all you can do is concentrate on your game. They’ve got to pick their heads up from midweek and Newcastle is a tough place to go.

Personally I know the draw wasn’t ideal for either team, but I’d rather that than a loss with Thursday (for us) still to come.

All we can do is try and keep winning, the premier league is a funny old place, no game is a guaranteed winner, so much at stake.

Stranger things have happened and no team is invincible!

I’ve been Spurs way too long, always got to have that positive hope until it’s definitely not possible

That is right and what a win it was too, we won with 5-0, the last 3 games have been big wins, 5-1, 0-4 and now 5-0, it will be a close race to the finish with just 3 games more to play
