Hi, I'm just wondering & curious...Do peeps think it's considered cheating to use the in-built settings on your camera phone... i.e the white balance or cloudy camera setting.

I'm not on about photo apps just the phones camera settings...

It raises many questions about what is and isn’t cheating

Women wear make up and push-up Bras, no one bats an eye lie

I put a pair of socks down my pants to create a nice bulge and suddenly I’m the weird one

Try putting the socks down the front instead.

Yeah it's cheating really but hey ho. Zooming in or cropping is cheating. Taking 3,000 pics and only posting the 1 that looks slightly decent is cheating too.

People accept them for their wedding photos.

I think they're fine, it only gets silly when using filters that change the way you look.

I agree. A filter is no different to getting your make up done really well, and no one cares about that. So long as the photo still looks like you, it's ok. Presumably if you were going to meet someone you'd exchange "live" pics or video chat or something first, so they've had their chance to see the unfiltered you.

I see nothing wrong in playing around with lighting and angles, if your cropping out bits of yourself or obvious photoshopping then that’s different! If you are just enhancing what’s already there it’s just like make up, a push up bra or a nice pair of heels xx

I think if people are using the apps that change their face, or changing their body shape, then that is most certainly cheating, if you’re just using filters to make the overall picture look better, then no I don’t.

I occasionally put a filter on mine, I’m pretty sure people don’t expect me to come with misty edges

There’s no need to be nasty.

I’d say that Doing your hair, cropping a pic etc is just presenting yourself in the nicest way. Putting a filter on that fundamentally changes your appearance is different.

As long as someone could look at you in person and look at you in a photo and say you look pretty much the same then that’s what matters.

Yes, it’s cheating. When I go on the first meet I have to carry some amber backlights and a little blue spotlight to throw some contrast on me. It can ruin the spontaneity a little but it’s worth it

when you see photos that are clearly photoshopped it's just silly, if you're not an expert in using it, it's obvious, blurred edges/distorted lines etc I think why bother. I've noticed hip's enhanced, legs slimmed down, waist pinched in. In comparison to that, the odd soft focus/enhanced lighting is nothing.

I much prefer looking at nicely framed, tightly cropped, clean backgrounds and punchy colours... So long as the men haven't drawn on that 6 pack i have no issue with it

I sometimes desaturate mine to stay within fab guidelines for bruising etc

It depends if your a purist or not. Phones and modern cameras (phones especially) use a technique called computational photography. Where you take a snap and the phone will automatically take a very fast series of photos. The image processor then extrapolates from the pictures all the best bits using computations and algorithms, produces a single good image from what it considers imperfections, focus camera shake, white balance etc.

You can argue that it takes all the skill out becaus it is camera doing the work not the person, which it does but like the modern age, with anything you have to judge it on its own merits.

You are back to being a purist or not whether it's cheating. The real give away is the construct of the photo. With modern phones and cameras you can get such high quality images but that doesn't make it a necessarily good photograph.

I pictures that stops people in their tracks, a picture that brings the subject to life, brings the viewer into the images or makes the viewer feel like they are part or in the image, tells a story. That is down to the actual person taking the picture, not the equipment.

I have done many talks and lectures on the subject. When I sit on judging panels, look at the merit of the picture not the equipment that was used to take it.

Doesn't matter if you have the best camera in the world, whether it traditional or phone. A meh picture will simply be a very high quality meh picture.

As a photographer I don't consider it cheating, so long as the image still looks like you.

I have shot 100's of people in the past, and I always ask them how they want their pictures edited. Some just want the odd spot covering up, and some want to look 3 stone lighter and 20 years younger.

As far as i'm concerned, it's a picture of them, and I want them to feel happy about it. I've made women cry with joy before over the pictures i've taken of them, and I feel great pictures are very important to someone's self esteem.

Who wants to look awful in a picture.

So, what i'm trying to say is, if it makes you happy, do it, they are for you xxx

We change the lighting, remove items out of pics (so you aren’t looking at the background), crop, however we never ever change us…that’s our bodies as they are.

Creating an image to make yourself look sexier is not cheating - it’s projecting yourself to look more appealing.

I wouldn't say so as all that does is add a different colour to your picture. Would you say a black and white filter is cheating?

I'd only consider it strange if someone was altering their appearance so it doesn't represent the real them. You get apps now where you can give yourself bigger tits, give yourself a waist and also you see some people with huge eyes and ridiculously white teeth.

I'd never meet anyone from pictures alone.

Yes thankfully the peeps I've met or sent live Kik pics & vids to have said I look exactly like my photos. So that's good. I may use the in-built white balance setting if the lighting isn't good when taking photos.

Jeez to the peeps who commented about make-up as been a filter...I totally agree ...I know women who are unrecognisable without make-up yes true .

I don't believe in wearing a make-up mask. Anyway I know 2 people personally & their partners never saw them without make-up yes Very True . Said women would go to bed with the full make-up face on...Remove it when he was asleep & get up before he woke & apply it again...

A few around the world have also sued their wives for fraud when they eventually `caught` them without the make-up mask filter...Very True Google it...

That's a whole other debate, question is really what is the purpose of the picture? If you want to sell something whether it is an image or product you want show the image in the best light.

But on a site like this, is a photoshoped enhanced image a deception. It's the same argument as why people use old photos, when ultimately if you may be meeting an image rather than the person?

In a ball gown because that's how we roll in N. Devon

For me, colour filters, background blur, light effects.... they're all completely fine and just enhance an image of the person.

Changing your shape, your size, your face, that's something completely different.

I don't understand why anyone would completely change how they look in a photo on here unless they absolutely aren't going to meet anyone.

Surely that's just deception.

It's far too easy to over edit a photo now that it becomes an unrealistic representation of what you actually look like (those who've seen the 'fake' photo in my friends-only photo's can testify ), but a little use of lighting, good angles and tone doesn't hurt ...even if it does get you called a catfish

That is I guess, a moral or philosophical question. Spent a lifetime of, some could argue, deception and i'm very good at it.

But I think right or wrong is really todo with motive and intent. If you want to considered as genuine then why put up a false image? Are those not diametrically opposed positions.

To be trully genuine this would include any and all flaws, would it not?

Before i get set upon this is about rationale not judgement.

To be genuine would not necessarily need to point out flaws but show oneself as is.. we see a lot of ‘this is me’ type comments here with a completely distorted image. It’s very clear that it’s far from them yet people still flock to complement. It baffles me.

And where do we stand when it comes to sucking in the belly, or twisting in a certain way, and right lighting?

There’s a powerful movie quote from a film called Assassination nation, its a teen film but it did make me thing:

“All you're looking at is the nudity. But this isn't about that. This isn't about the sex or the porn or even being naked. This is about everything that goes into it. The pressure. The endless mind-fuck, the 10,000 naked selfies you took before this one, trying to get it just right. Trying to make sure the light hides your left nipple because it's slightly inverted or it's smaller. Or maybe your labia's too big. But if you pull your pelvic bone up and bend to the left slightly in a lowlight setting, then you'll be beautiful. Hashtag flawless, body confident. But it's all one big lie. You can never be, because nobody is flawless, and all it takes is one fucking asshole to remind you of that. One guy to say, "LOL," or, "She's nasty." And you're right back at square one. So, OK, maybe it is explicit or extreme, but it sure as hell looks like life to me.“

Which I see, but don’t we all do that, so what’s real? What’s fake? What’s deception?

Curating 1000 selfies , with make up on, and perfect hair, with the right lighting, right pose…could be seen as deception.

I don’t know

Just over there

It's not cheating, it's enhancing! Unless you alter body shape I don't see anything wrong! I feel a well taken pic, edited to enhance and focus shows care and attention and I enjoy seeing them. Snapchat faces however send me running! Especially if a guy has a puppy face

At the end of the day I post photos that I am happy with, filtered or unfiltered.

People can post whatever photos they like on their profile. They don't owe anything to anyone else so can't 'cheat' anyone. If they plan to meet then obviously it's a good idea to swap recent, realistic photos to avoid any awkwardness but again, that's an individual choice to make.

I’m not into filters, lighting and highlighting yes…. It makes a photo more interesting and brings out details.

We all have a preference of a side we like taken as a photo, or an angle!

I think as long as it looks like them then what’s the problem?

"There are people here that are completely unrecognisable by the photos they filter. To me that’s deception regardless of whether they meet or not. Why put any photos up of they’re not a true representation of yourself? I don’t get it.

Yes it’s deception. If people constantly put up altered images purely to get false praise there’s something inherently wrong.

Then the discussion is to why they are flocking to complement them? But i'm sure my views on fabbing and complementing are quite well known

Wasn't referring to pointing out flaws, saying being trully genuine would include them in the package, opposed to hiding them

God knows why they do.. saddens me. It enables this to become the norm and feeds the issue. It’s completely false.

We worry about how the perfect images online affect our younger generations and yet here are grown adults doing exactly that. Just to hear the words ‘you’re beautiful’ which means nothing in the context of fake pics.

It shouldn’t bother me but it grates my gears. Spent years telling my daughter to embrace herself and all her oddities. Yet social media is saying something different.

La la land

I do alter lighting in some photos and use B&W because they are more flattering.

But I also post pictures without any filters on whatsoever. I also post pictures of my cellulite, my stomach pouch so nobody can say they don't know what my body looks like. If I send a face picture to anyone, again it's minus filters and more often than not minus make up.

Skin is not supposed to look like a porcelain doll.

If you’re here to just show off your pics etc then crack on but if you’re here to meet people then yes it’s deception. I don’t have issues with lighting etc, I do have issues with changing your face. I have wasted time meeting women who have done this and I think it’s bang out of order. These days it’s so obvious that it’s not too much of an issue. It’s not even comparable to a push up bra or wearing make up! I wouldn’t go anywhere without make up on and never have so how would that not be me?! I’ve even removed most of my pics recently and replaced them because I’ve put weight on. So yes if you’re meeting people and don’t look anything like your pics then in my opinion it’s cheating/deception/time wasting.

Although some of the face pics on here are bloody hilarious with these filters .

I'm not on about photo apps just the phones camera settings..."

The settings are there for a reason, white balance may need to be changed manually if you have a mixture of lighting in the frame, such as natural light from a window and a tungsten light. Your camera may pick up the tungsten lighting and set the white balance to suit, this will cause any natural light to look very blue.

You can of course use this effect for enhancing the ambience but it does not alter the subject like a smooth skin filter would. for that reason I do not think camera settings are cheating, more taking control

Try putting the socks down the front instead. "

I have a bit of a moral dilemma about some of my older, ‘slimmer’ pictures. I like some of them and think they’re good pictures so would like to keep them up. However - I’ve also posted more recent pictures (although my phone’s knackered so the quality is poor) which clearly show the weight I’ve gained.

If I meet someone I also take great pains to point out than I’m now larger than my earlier pictures - and I’ve mentioned the weight gain on my profile too.

However - I still feel a little like I’m deceiving people by showing the old pictures - because I know most guys perve the pics and take zero notice of the text.

I like the pics though - so I’ve kept them up.

See? Dilemma! Xx

Not at all, I use a professional camera and a phone camera. The only gripe I have with phone cameras is that, occassionally, they over-expose so when you're trying to take a picture, it looks faded.

But is it considered cheating? Naah not really.

Yeah it's cheating really but hey ho. Zooming in or cropping is cheating. Taking 3,000 pics and only posting the 1 that looks slightly decent is cheating too. "

I think it’s cheating if you photoshop your body to change the shape etc, but not cheating if you use the basic filters for colour and lighting etc! I do look like my pics so there’s no deception there at all, yes my tits really are that small ! If using a simple b&w filter gives you the confidence to post your image to public, then why the heck not!

Met a few people in the past who just didn't look like their pics and it was because of the angel over anything else. Actually double checked the pictures after as well it was that far away on one person.

I’ve had a few meets where I was completely disappointed when the person I was meeting didn’t look anything like their recent photos.

It does waste people’s time and it is Very Dishonest. But that’s just my opinion.

There's no other word for it...It's a form of Cat-Fishing...They've filtered their pics so much that now their photos are actually faked outta it. These people are actually only fooling themselves...they must be sweating it when they've arranged a meet...turning up looking nothing like their photos...

& it is a form of deception also...roping someone in with heavily filtered photos.

Unfortunately have to disagree, one of my top selling pictures was taken with my phone.

One of the questions i get asked all the time is "What is the best camera to have" my answer always is "the one you have with you"

People get hung up on technology, apps, filters.

"

Yes all my pics are taken on my phone too... Buuuttttttt the camera on this phone isn't great...I had better phone cameras...I've a habit of losing my phones Or damaging them with water.

"Hi, I'm just wondering & curious...Do peeps think it's considered cheating to use the in-built settings on your camera phone... i.e the white balance or cloudy camera setting.

I'm not on about photo apps just the phones camera settings...

Very rarely use the Camera on my Phone, much prefer my Proper camera..

I have my primary work cameras but the point was a great picture is not dependent on a technology/camera or how well you can use apps or photoshop.

No way is it cheating , professional photographer would use those tools ,

Why would anyone post the ‘worst’ picture ?

If you happy with yourself ‘pic adjusted or not’ first … who cares what anyone else thinks .. then fuck the rest of them …

Maybe the ‘how old is the pic’ is issue posting one from 1991 saying it current

OMG "posting a pic from `91" wtf 30yrs old. Don't tell me they're trying to pretend it's recent

Thankfully all my pics are very very recent.

I did meet 2 Cat-Fish before who had very dated pics on profile & kept sending dated pics in DM...long story...

I've just discovered that a Female that I thought had long blonde kinky hair has short ginger hair

She wore a wig for all her photos... Is that defo cheating or just an altered ego???

I'm a little confused now at this stage...

Prestonish

Tbh I think the biggest issue currently is that a large number of people (myself included) have put weight on since the first lockdown - sometimes a significant amount - and in many cases are failing to mention it on their profile or update their photos.

As a regular club goer I’ve come across a number of men and women who are now several sizes larger than they are in their fab profile.

Ammmmmmmmmm it kinda did matter to me as it was her hair that caught my eye initially. Yes thankfully she was honest about it though
