I've been toying with the idea of emigrating for a while now and I'm just looking for a bit of inspiration.

What made you take the leap? Where'd you go? How was the process? Why did you come back?

I lived in Austria for a year. It was easy getting there when we were in the EU but I don't know what it's like now. They are very bureaucratic and their language is a bugger to learn, but it's a great place with lots to discover. Luke

Yes, for a short while I lived on the Isle of Wight, but had to leave as I’m scared of needles.

Manchester (she/her)

I moved to the UK to pursue a PhD.

It was the best mistake I've ever made. I was too young, naive and sheltered to move that far from home (Australia), and I would not recommend that then-me do such a thing. Christ.

It's been challenging, immigration is a hell beast on wheels and often expensive (now over unless I pursue citizenship).

Even with such cultural similarities it pushed me out of my comfort zone for a long time. Still occasionally surprising and it's been over ten years.

I haven't gone back.

I lived in Germany for an academic year (so 9 months ) when I was a student

Didn't really have much choice in the matter, as it was a condition of my degree course, and despite being nervous about going - as a very naive 20 year old - it was probably the best year of my life.

I sometimes regret not having moved back there permanently....

Me here. And a couple of countries on the way to here. Helped as I did it in my teens and didn’t have much choice.

Im living abroad right now lol but have lived in other countries. I'd recommend visiting anywhere first. As we know everywhere has their own ways and customs so you need to know what you want your change to be if that makes sense. From my experience anyways

Great comment and really interesting insight The UK has some really ridiculous and expensive immigration policies but it sounds like it was worth it for the life changing experience of living abroad.

Alicante, Spain. (Sometimes in Wales)

I spent a little bit more than a year in Central Asia and I've lived in Spain now since the end of last year.

So much is similar, so much is sooooo different.

But what a great experience!

Sometimes it's worth it

Sometimes it's not, but I have the choice of sucking it up or tearing my life apart. *shrug*

We came on holiday in 2004 and hated it because we were very British but then something happened with a guest we had with us so my wife myself and the then baby would fuck off out on our own and we feel in love with the area.

Came back the next month and brought a house to retire to in around 2025 but gave it bollocks and moved here in 2006 and we have been here ever since..

In a ball gown because that's how we roll in N. Devon

I split my time between here and Oklahoma for a lot of my teen years, then lived there for a couple of years.

I have no regrets because they're pointless..... but a part of me thinks I should maybe have stayed.

the abyss

I did but I was very young so it wasn't exactly my choice (parents work) but it was definitely the best couple of years of my childhood. I have always thought of emigrating but couldn't leave my parents at the age they are

Central Borders

Living "abroad" as we speak (although this is really home now). Got a job offer I couldn't refuse. Job didn't work out, but I'm still here

Also lived in Greece for a year, no reason really. Just went for a holiday and decided to stick around for a bit longer (remember the days when we could still do that) x
