I don't think we will ever find out. I don't think her parents did it, but they are the ones to blame for whatever did happen to her.

I'm assuming that we won't ever know the details, as it's now so long ago. They will be totally in league with each other, if they have any little more information on it and so would now suppress it for their own survival.

2 simple likely causes - they were negligent parents and opportunistic snatchers caught wind of the details, possibly via hotel connections.

They were involved somehow, in excess of their negligence of leaving them alone.

They have lost a child, which I know from personal experience of a death is worse than most anything else. We should predominantly let it go, leaving it to the police to progress, if anything comes to light.
