Positive Pushback

North Cork

Is there an emerging trend where people are starting to "push back" against the negative comments from the same posters who frequently jump in on threads with unnecessarily critical, condescending or contrary posts.

We are all entitled to our opinions, and the forums are an excellent place to express them, but the perpetual posturing, often followed by a raft of simpering "me too" back slapping posts, can become a tad tedious and it is refreshing to see some of the consistent nay-sayers being called out and put back in their box, for a little while at least.

Freedom of expression is a valuable asset and should never be drowned out by the echoing of empty cans.

I've said it many times, agreement can be just that. Not simpering or pandering or backslapping.

Somewhere around

Any message about encouraging respectful discussion and freedom of speech would probably work better if it didn't use comparisons to "empty cans" or suggest they should be "put back in their box." Although it is a fascinating act of gymnastics to advocate for freedom of speech while calling for censorship. 🤷🏼‍♂️

I absolutely agree.....it can be.

But when it is fairly obvious that those expressing agreement haven't even read the original or subsequent posts and are mearly supporting someone to be seen to do so, it can be a bit tiresome.

not far from

The majority of people are possibly tired of habitual negativity. You should be able to say whatever you want but it should be useful. Respectful expression is good, criticism should be constructive. There should not be an expectation of disagreement to add negativity for its own sake.

I guess if you already have the mindset that it's pandering then it might be difficult to see it as otherwise.

And likewise you should be able to call out sexism, bullying and absolute bullsh!t when you see it.

If a person doesn't like the contents of a thread just move on to the next one.

somewhere

People call others out all the time and as long as its within the rules then I don't see the problem

I usually just report offensive posts and find the mods are pretty quick to delete them and whole threads

We dont have to agree or disagree with any thread or indeed write on every thread but its real life not a disney cartoon so we dont have to like everyone either ....even for a ride
