I think there should be an option to have this disabled, at least on a post by post basis - like have a tick box you tick if you want people to private message you or something

Pointless a tick is not going to stop people.

Solution without adding more for admin to deal with.

If anyone messages just block them.

I think the OPs suggestion is something along the lines that each poster could enable or disable private messaging from their forum post, as they choose, by ticking it. It wouldn't just be to provide a visual guide to their wishes.

I agree with the suggestion. I'd disable the option by default and just click to enable it, on demand

Apologies for my ignorance, does the “reply privately” bypass any filters in place that may stop someone messaging directly otherwise?

No filters stay in place

So how’s this different to anyone messaging you anyway?

Had some pleasant conversations via the function..

Some not so much, but we just block those as they are evidently not likely to be 'our type'.

Should be optional though really as 'online' status in our opinion!
