Ok so we know time travel is possible, but if you could travel back in time what year would you choose.

Don't you mean it isn't possible? or it is possible from your perspective of reality and time. If you have achieved time travel surely this would result in a paradox making it impossible to actually travel back in time as you would have altered your reality therefore making your present reality impossible

there have been arguments that time travel is inherently paradoxical. The most famous paradox is the grandfather paradox: you travel back in time and kill your grandfather, thereby preventing your own existence.

Is Time Travel possible? Tom Weiler, and Chui Man Ho have what they call a long shot theory which in essence does not violate any of the laws of physics, however it does rely on them discovering the Higgs boson particle, which could be used to explain why particles like protons,neutrons, and electrons have mass, if this is discovered Weiler and Chui Man believe that a second particle called the Higgs singlet will be discovered at the same time, according to their theory this particle should have the ability to jump into an extra or fifth dimension where they can move backward or forward in time. All the aforementioned parodoxes would be avoided because time travel would be limited to these particles. So is time travel possible? In theory yes and it is getting closer to being a reality, I believe the real question is can man travel through time, to which the answer would be that it is highly improbable.

Actually, time travel IS possible, AND has been done!!!

Scientists took two atomic clocks, which were exactly syncronised, and put one on an around the world trip via airliners.

When they were put together again, the time on the one clock (which had been flown around the world) was slightly slower (by a few seconds) than the other, thus proving that it had "gone back" in time.

Unfortunately thats about all I remember of the experiment, I think they theorised that it was because of the direction of travel of the "slower" clock, i.e. it flew "against" the flow of time around the globe, i.e. westwards.

You may be reffering to the Hafele-Keating experiment which took place on 1971 which involved fourcesium beam atomic clocks which were flown twice around the world on a comercial airliners. Many see this experiment as a display of special relativity, to define, according to special relativity the rate of a clock is greatest according to an observer who is at rest with respect to the clock. when the clock is not at rest the clock runs slower, and the effect is porortional to the square of the velocity. But you may be talking about something else altogether.

The results were verified in an improved experiment in 1976 by the University of Maryland, this time agreeing with the relativistic predictions to a precision of about 1%.Versions of the experiment have also been done in which the only effect was gravitational and in which the only effect was kinematic.

A reenactment of the original experiment by the NPL took place in 1996 on the 25th anniversary of the original experiment, using more precise atomic clocks during a flight from London to Washington, D.C. and back again. The results were verified to a higher degree of accuracy. A time gain of 39 ± 2 ns was observed, compared to a relativistic prediction of 39,8 ns. In June 2010, NPL again repeated the experiment, this time around the globe (London - Los Angeles - Auckland - Hongkong - London). The predicted value was 246 ± 3 ns, the measured value was 230 ± 20 ns.

Nowadays such relativistic effects are, for example, routinely incorporated into the calculations used for the Global Positioning System. Because the experiment was reproduced by increasingly accurate methods, there has been a consensus among physicists since at least the 1970s that the relativistic predictions of gravitational and kinematic effects on time have been conclusively verified. Criticisms of the experiment did not address the subsequent verification of the result by more accurate methods, and have been shown to be in error.

It seems my origional times were off by a bit lol!

This post is getting a lot more scientific than I originally anticipated. The post was meant to be tongue-in-cheek and what I was asking was; that if time travel were possible what point in history (time) would you like to travel back to. There might be a sporting event that you would like see, or perhaps the birth or death of some historical figure.

My initial posting was deliberately vague. Yes we can travel forward in time, each of us do it every day but not at a particularly fast rate. There are many replies from those who obviously have an understanding of relativistic Physics and the various paradoxes associated with time travel. Hawking said that if it were possible to travel back in time then why have we never met anyone from the future? The Grandfather paradox is associated with the prime directive in that we should never meddle with things that have occurred in our past.

Newton is one of my hero's and his equations of motion have stood the pace of time. Unfortunately, has Einstein predicted, Newtons equations do not hold for bodies travelling at speed. Einstein predicted that if we were able to travel at great speeds, then the closer we travel to the speed of light then time would slow down. Of course to do this we would need a huge amount of energy.
