You shouldn't smoke around kids full stop.

smoking in cars is just as bad if not worse than using your mobile and should be banned. drop your phone in your lap while driving and you can leave it there but drop a fag in your lap and your gonna burn something and probally panic a bit.

Im a smoker and have kids. Whislt I hope they dont smoke when they are older there are other things that they could smoke ,take or use that I am much more concerned about.

Thought we were allowed freedom of choice in our society but is seems not.

When the end of the world is near bet I know who gets the blame for it....smokers

It probably would be best to not have sex in the car if you have children in the back.

Kids have no choice in the car or even in the house about smoke. Society is tasked to try and protect those who can't make proper choices themselves

There is an endless list of what you shoulnt do in the pressence of children are they all obeyed? Personaly I'd rather my child be in the pressence of a smoker than an abuser.

I wonder if the ppl who are so up for smoking in cars to be banned would feel the same way if drinking was banned in homes where children are present as children seem to be the main reason stated. I'd say a hammered parent could do more harm in a shorter time than a parent who smokes, and no I don't drink when my kids are home.

I'm on the side of a ban I'm afraid, but that's cos if using your phone, drinking or eating whilst behind the wheel is banned, why should smoking be any different?

so they should ban car radios have to take hand off wheel and eyes off road to use them ??????

you can get sort of a hands free thing for those though cant you, well a stalk on the steering column anyway, only same as using indicators then or wipers. i guess if smokers can have a friend to light up and hold the cigarette for them then that would be ok too

Being an ex smoker, ( I know, the worst kind) I was actually horrified when I smelt the stench of fags on a child who came into my works. It made me realise my kids smelt the same and I was ashamed of myself.

When you smoke you dont realise it and you can come up with the "its better than them being around X&Y" but it isnt. They stink end of.

Also the 3 kids that I smoked around used to have ENT problems. The one I had after I gave up has never been to the doctors. Coincidence??

Monmouth

I am genuinely in two minds about this debate - there were some interesting comments on last night's Question Time from Aberystwyth.

One argument was this: obviously it is a stupid and dangerous thing to do (primarily from the perpective of poisoning your kids, but also as a general distraction while driving) - but there shouldn't be yet another law banning something, as we are gradually creating a population that don't/can't think for themselves.. they can't do anything unless the government tells them what's best.

I kind of agree with this - people obviously shouldn't smoke around their kids, in cars or anywhere (one stat last night suggested that smoking in a car created 23 times more risk than other places, presumably because of the very confined environment). But shouldn't we simply have a state that educates people to the point where they know this as a matter of common sense?

Obviously that would necessitate spending money on education rather than bankers bonuses, but that's another argument

Both are abuse, as the other people/children involved are unable to prevent it, smoking or otherwise...

The bit about drinking in front of kids, is not a fault, but getting pissed is.

If I recall, there is an offence of being d*unk in charge of a minor (child), not a coal miner etc...

Just another dig at smokers, just add to list. I smoke and have kids, I dont smoke with kids in the car/house not about to start. However as said before my car I pay my taxes/fuel/insurance. Stop worrying about what ppl do in they cars more on those dont pay tax/insurance, speeding joy rides, drink/druged drives! when the gov gonna stop next no smoke in your own home even thoses who have no kids, the country is in S*** stage, rip off prices, so if they stop smoking full stop, who's gonna fill the tax gap from smokers? the system turns a blind I to the druggie injecting parents in front of kids and abusive parents!!!! In a word "Priorities" shall leave it at that or could be here all day! lol

"... I smoke and have kids, I dont smoke with kids in the car/house not about to start..."

Why don't you smoke in front of your kids or in the car?

Is it because of the reason they are proposing, maybe not all smokers and as thoughtful as you towards their children and smoking

The type of contrived response I was expecting

The police and other agencies will enforce all laws passed via Parliament or Strasbourg, if they are not on a tea break....
