So my friend had a little rant to me earlier, about this family who were talking Welsh to each other whilst sat in the reception of their GP surgery.

She said that they were totally rude for doing this and they shouldn’t be speaking Welsh in front of people who can’t.

I was flabbergasted.

I told her that we are Welsh, we live in Wales and they have every right to speak Welsh to whoever and wherever they please. It’s her problem that she can’t understand the language.

She thinks I’m biased as I’m also a Welsh speaker.

What are your thoughts?

That’s a point that I made (using China as an example). Her argument was, “but they all speak Chinese there, hardly anyone speaks Welsh here”

Not a Welsh speaker. But this sort of thing is rife. It's just idiotic bigotry that somehow has become acceptable.

Rwy’n cytuno.

I think I get where she’s coming but I don’t agree. Think it’s lovely to hear the Welsh language still being used. If I felt they were talking about me however then I may have a different view, but would still state that view to the people involved.

Love a bit of culture in a dr’s surgery me! In mine, the only culture would seem to be the ones growing on some of the people who come in!!

A friend of mine went into a cafe in West Wales a few years ago with his family. As they sat down the people on the next table switched their conversation from English to Welsh. However they didn't realise that my friends wife was a fluent Welsh speaker and she didn't tell him until they left that they were talking about him - his clothes, how scruffy he looked etc etc....

Back to the original question though, people have every right to converse in whichever language they want to and I see nothing rude or offensive in it at all.

the difference is everyone that can speak welsh can also speak english.

welsh is ok to be used to keep the language alive.its never going to be used as a main language as long as i have a hole in my bum.

Maybe, just maybe it was a private conversation and they were happy to use Welsh. I don't understand why your friend thought it worth noting.

I certainly don't have a problem with them using any language they choose.

I hardly speak any welsh I have a close

Friend who is fluent and teaches me bits, but it’s a beautiful language and those who speak it should do loud and proud I think your friend is a bit of a prick to be honest! We live in Wales people should speak the language if they want to xx

I needed to know that I wasn’t actually being biased and that people are entitled to speak in whichever language they choose!

This has actually happened to me

Two women were talking about how dolled up I was whilst shopping in town, they didn’t know that I was going on a date shortly after and that I could also speak Welsh

In the decades I lived in West Wales I never once witnessed someone change from speaking English to Welsh so that someone else couldn't understand them.

This is the sad state of affairs of the world we live in now. It seems anyone can take offence of anything. People are somehow judged based on their language, dressing sense and sometimes even accent. I get that sometimes as I'm not a native Welshman but consider Cardiff my home. Wouldn't be anywhere but here.

I'm a Welsh speaker and I think what she said is utterly ridiculous! My children speak Welsh also. I think it's so important to keep it going. Imagine we lost our language. How sad would that be xxmiss

So u should be!! I’m not welsh, but I do believe that when in ur now country.. u should speak how u wish .. I wish I could speak another language.. ur a lucky to be able too x

I do not live in Wales at the moment, although I spent three happy years near Harlech in the late 80's. Never learned much of the language, Shu Mae, borra dda, Naddolig LLawen, nos da being about the limit of my learning. But what a wonderful language to hear. I intend retiring back to Harlech eventualy and look forward to learning more.

Strange to say though I was at Harlech railway station at the time of the school train, the children (teenagers) spoke welsh to each other but swore at each other in English, very odd!

All depends if , I speak 4 different languages and when I have guests who doesn't speak the language, I would not speak a language they don't understand, because is rude . But if strangers I don't know I speak with my son as I please.

I wouldn't like to be involved in a conversation that I didn't understand.So to me depends if she was involved. I been before with my English friends to my home country. Because I knew they didn't speak it .we communicate in English.
