Looking into doing my long distance triathlon, the famous one that takes place In Pembrokeshire once a year.

First part is a swim in the sea

I've only ever splashed about in the sea not swam as such

But did swim a mile in a pool a few years ago

Any tips

Cowbridge

Tow a buoy that you can cling to when you tire, and enlist the help of a friend in a sea kayak to paddle alongside and encourage you.

I'm from that area originally and watch it every year.

Anyone who does it is insane.

Seriously though, it's an incredible event. I'm tired just watching it, so I'm not the guy to give tips.

The only thing I would say is that loads of local folks do it and they are out in the sea for months before. On the day, I hear competitors asking where exactly to swim etc - people who haven't swim there, or in the sea much at all must be at a big disadvantage.

Basically, I'm saying - if you're going to blow lots of money on the entry fee and equipment, spend some more and train on the course (all three stages) in advance if you've not done so before. It's a particularly tough course, even for that event.

When it comes to the swim, it's obviously different when there 2,000 other loons slashing around too. Be prepared to get kicked and whacked in the head and body. A lot.

It's an amazing event and many competitors say the support from the crowds is the best anywhere.

You need to do more than a mile swimming in the pool if you're training to do the iron man

You'd better up your lengths

And that's not to mention sea swimming, where it's cold

At least you're more buoyant

I've watched it a few times at various places so have some course knowledge

I'll just have to get a wetsuit and see what works

Never do sea swimming alone, always have a buddy and like a previous post try and get a friend in a kayak, get your distances up to scratch before you try the sea, get a proper tri wetsuit as this is better designed for swimming.

Join a triathlon club, they are not all super human, you will find a wide range of abilities and lots of advice.

And see if you live near an open water swimming group, sea, lake or river, as other people have said, do not do it alone especially as you are a novice.

Good luck and stay safe!
