Ok. Girlfriends brother borrowed her car & it just stop working. RAC went out to him & apparently it could be the cam belt but he's not sure. The only way for them to find out is for them to strip the engine & he said it could cost about £900 to fix. She has not got £900

Help!!

Well if the belt has gone it wont be a cheap repair prob be easyer to find a second hand engine if you mail me i can talk to u bout it as i dont know what engine is in the car

To be really honest here the car is not worth fixing and the time even on the cheap.

To get an engine at about £100 to £150 then maybe travel across the country to get it .then pay £150 to £250 and that's cheap for someone to fit it you could get a good car on eBay for £400

If your belt tensioner has broken or failed then the belt tension would be lost and the belt would of slipped off the pulleys,so the belt will unlikly be actually broken,but the effect is the same if it had snapped instead..this in most cases will likly cause engine damage in regards to " valve to piston contact " Where the effected valves become bent / fractured caused by the piston(s) clashing with the open valve(s)..To verify if that has happened to you if prefered or to fully verfiy - a compression test on each cylinder can be done before the head is removed completely - to see which cylinder/valves has suffered damage..if any have likly suffered damage - then the cylinder head will need to be removed to replace those or replace the whole head with a good second hand one from the same engine, if your lucky enough to find one - once the heads removed then it will be an oppertunity also to check for any damage to the surface of the piston(s)...

These engines are all Interference engines. So if cam belt goes it will make a mess of the whole thing. Was he driving it at speed when it let go? Or ticking over?

you'll be surprised how cheap you can pick these up so maybe look for another that needs say a wing or door thats going cheap.or. as everyone said scrap it .its just not worth the effort and could turn into a money pit.

It could be anything in all fairness, you need to get a mechanic to look at it it might not be the cam belt. I have a mate who owns a scrap yard in Swansea so can put you in touch with him for any parts but I think a second opinion is needed first mate before you panic. In all fairness £900 fitted with the engine isn't to far off the mark and what others have said if you can't fix it it might be cheaper looking for an alternative although with a new engine it could run for several more years....if that's what's needed. Pm if you want ile try and give you a few numbers to help you out

Normally I'd say just remove the oil cap and turn engine over with socket but if I remember the crank pulley is awkward to get at on them

Spin it overon the starter and see if the cam moves, saves getting too the crankshaft. I know this may do more damage, but if the belt has snapped the engines scrap anyhow so nothing too lose.

In my experience some AA breakdown guys are not the best. These have a common habbit f killing injectors so the fuel rail doesnt build enough pressure to fire the injects, so just turns over and does nothing.

As others have suggested, get it recovered to a garage for a proper diagnosis. Shame too get rid of it if its only something simple... For example a secnod hand injector could be fitted for less than £100
