Does anyone know if it's true that all our messages are screened and read by mods who are totally unregulated or monitored ?

With the huge number of messages that get sent on here. I really don't think they would have the time.

Maybe if one member has been reported a few times they may take a look

It would be more likely that they have a flag system. Certain words would flag up that they should take interest in what's being said. Anything that is illegal, not within the site rules, etc.

Considering the type of site and what people actually put on their profiles I would say that they don't monitor messages but definitely monitor the Forums

I am admin on a forum and used to be tasked with monitoring content of a company e-mail system. Truth be told I very rarely check private messages or emails as they really don't interest me. Only if there is a complaint or the message title draws attention/keywords

I think it is a flag system cause you can't send other website names

Considering that the forums are monitored and the mods haven't denied it !! I have to believe that our private messages are not as private as I thought !!!!!

It would mean that any personal info we send is viewed by strangers who may not even be covered by the data protection act as they are volunteers who are site members !!!

I'm sure we as members should be made aware of this before we go sending sensitive information I.e our real names etc via not so private messages

They are covered by the Data Protection Act, whether they know so or not.

If they don't know it how will they know what their obligations in keeping to its guidelines ?

I go by the basic rule that nothing on the internet is truly private.

While I understand the gov having the capability I'm not sure we should have people who are not authorised and random strangers looking at our " private " messages as they are private for a reason !!

Not authorised by whom? Unfortunately nowadays you have to assume that there are people that can look at anything you post online.

Besides, we authorised it...

Mod's cannot read your private messages. Admin might be able to but only then it would only be if someone reported the message to them for some reason like severe abuse for instance.

I think they have much better things to do than sit there reading hundreds of thousands of messages daily lol.

Personally if I received such a message I would hope that admin could look at it if I asked them to so they could act against the individual concerned. Otherwise I'd have no proof and admin could do nothing!

Where did we sign up for that as it's not in the small print

And anyone who has access to other people's personal information has to be trained and licences under the data protection act !!! That is not happening on here unless a mod wishes to confirm that it is ?

The Investigatory Powers Bill. Allows the government to snoop into, well everything...

So yeah, we as the public authorised it.

Yes but the mods are not big brother although they do like to think they are and we did not authorise them or are you to tell me otherwise

"Have you looked in terms and conditions"

Yes does not state that our private messages will be monitored or any mention of mods being able to check and undergone any data protection training or licensing ??

I see we still haven't had a response from a mod which must mean I'm right and they are all running around checking their requirements and obligations

In the meantime we are opening ourselves up to them via our not so private messages

It would be good if it was common knowledge then we could protect ourselves

Even wattsapp scramble their messages so no one can get access

It's probably now nothing to worry about. As this is now out in the public domain . I'm sure if the office of fair trading and data protection were to contact the site ,that their paperwork would show that all mods are trained and licensed prior to their appointment. so I can now at least feel a little safer in that knowledge , but I will be careful what I put in mine in the future !!!

Mate, I found your tinfoil hat!

Seriously, calm down. I think it's safe to say that nothing is private on an online platform.

You're being a bit dramatic, and what's so interesting about your messages that admin would want to read them anyway?

who's to say the person you're sending the messages to can be trusted ? you can't place every member under the data protection hat. if you're that worried ( or shpuld i say paranoid) about the content then don't send the messages, simples !!!

I've never had a problem sending house party details in private messages on here.

I've have, however, named another swinging site in a message once and had it not sent .. I wondered if they have a list of key words or something that automatically causes a block ...?

We have the right to choose who we wish to see our information and it's not paranoia it's our choice and if we deem fit to give it to a stranger that's our perogarituve

It's not not there for strangers otherwise it's not private

The same way as when we choose not to play with just anybody and everybody it's our choice and some of us value that

O o O oo

Half a million messages a day are sent on here, I doubt very much that Admin have the time or inclination to read through them.

If someone is reported they can access the mails between those people but that is obvious otherwise they wouldn't be able to investigate, it is only Admin who can do this, not pic/ chat or forum mods.
