What an upsetting evening I've had... Had to sign a police statement... Here's the story -

So, after going for a late night stroll (which I always do to keep me fit, roughly 4 miles), I came across a very distressed male on the Pembroke Dock / Pembroke cycle path. He was sat in the middle of the cycle path, legs crossed, arms folded, head down, rocking back and forth...

When I walked passed him, asked if he was alright... I got a nod of the head... So, leave it 10 minute's and double back on myself to see if he was still there... He was....

Being concerned for him, I again asked as I walked passed if he was ok... Again I got a nod of the head. Not convinced by his safety, I phoned 101 to report a distressed looking person. The police turned up and met me outside Pembroke school entrance. I then directed them to his direction, of which they attended... I walked on.... As I walked on, noticed a further police car and ambulance turned up....

By the time I returned to my address, there was a police car waiting for me. When I asked about the guy, they stated "thanks, Rocko for your call, he had infact self harmed BOTH WRISTS".. They then asked if I'd attend today to sign some paperwork. I did.

I would like to say, though, to the 3 people that walked straight past the guy and did and said fuck all.....

YOU SELF CENTERED, SELFISH ASSHOLES! - IF THIS IS WHAT SOME PEOPLE ARE LIKE IN THE DOCK, YOU'RE PRICKS! - THE GUY COULD HAVE DIED!!

I remember laying on the floor on the Kingsway once with another female giving first aid to a woman who had been hit by a car when waiting for paramedics whilst quite a large handful of men had just stood there looking and one actually called me to help her. It's human instinct for most people to help others, for some it obviously isn't

when I see someone upset, it bothers me..

Alright, like, generally it's not my problem.. But I'm sure the least people can do is see if they're OK.. And you're right, you never know when you'll need a hand! - good to see there's like minded people on this site! - it restores my faith in humanity!

.... Nowadays it's just self, self, self.. Fuck anyone else.. So long as they get what they want, they couldn't care less.. I'm sure it'd be different, though if they were in the shit...

I always think that whoever is in need of help is always someone's child, and as a mother if any of my babies were ever in trouble I really hope someone would help them. It's just natural instinct to me

I've worked with security and the mental health services, so could tell by his body language and overall state that something was definitely not right!

A few yrs back i mrs seen a girl on the floor and to me she looked dead while others walked passed i stopped to see if she was ok, i sent my 7 yr old son down the road (100yards) to the phone box to ring the police for help while i was checking if she was in fact alive, no soon had he run off down the road she was up on her feet screaming like a banchee and throwing punches its lucky i can handle myself and managed to pin her down to stop her hurting herself or me, when the police turned up they thought id attacked her i was just lucky an old guy stopped to help, turns out she was high on drugs

So would i stop and help now maybe, i think after that its made me alot more cautious to offer help because you dont no what your walking into, is it wrong of me to think twice about helping others in the future i dont think so its just made me aware that bad things can happen even when your trying to do good

Good on you op for helping tho sounds like the guy was lucky you walked by x

So you asked him twice if he was ok and was told yes both times. And it was only your experience and presumably training in mental health that made you call the police?

Would it be fair to assume that the other passers by had asked the same question and received the same response? And that they may have not had the benefit of your experience? And so may have assumed the guy just wanted to be left alone and may just have had a few? And may have not wanted to get involved in case the guy became violent in the middle of nowhere?

Well done for helping out but please don't write off all the others as terrible people for not taking action. It doesn't make you better than them. X

Either way, the police dealt with the guy.. I'd have rather had the police deal with the guy than myself, hence why I just walked by and verbally asked him if he was alright. Thankfully the police are better equipped to deal with any violent outburst that may have happened. On another note, what if he'd attacked other people?! - just as well I made the call, clearly they thought backup was needed as another car was called out... Swiftly followed by an ambulance.. Judging by the guy it was most certainly a mental health issue. I would have been safe, anyway, as I'm allowed to legally carry (through a license) a police standard truncheon, which I always have on me (as well as the paperwork to cover it lol) - but yea, good call on my behalf... Had he have not been picked up when he was, there would have been another loss of life.. Yea I suppose I had the advantage of knowledge regarding such situations.. I suppose it realistically boils down to your nature, though, so equally would accept why some people would be wary about approaching such an individual... I'm very confident though, that had the shoe been on the other foot, surely some people would love to have been helped in such a situation..

I once heard a thump from outside my house one evening while I was sat watching TV. I got up and looked out and an old guy was lying in the middle of the road.

As I looked for a few minutes trying to figure out what was going on, several cars drove straight past him, even though he was sat up and holding his arm out, waving to try and get help.

I went out and had to drag him to the pavement, it was a hit and run, he had a badly broken leg.

People are shits.
