How do I get rid of them? Any ideas apart from the usual scare or drinking water upside down?

Not disappearing and had them for ages now

I hate them! I've tried everything to rid of them but the seem to last for hours! Apparently going for a long walk/jog helps but I can never be arsed!

Inhale slowly hold your breath for as long as you can then exhale slowly (only through your mouth) hold your breath again and repeat a couple of time, this will put your diaphragm out of spasm and hey presto

Thanks both, gone now holding breath seemed to have worked.

I'm glad I didn't have to try jogging, I think my whole body would go into shock lol

Put on a pair of y front pants - go into the kitchen, get some Nutella, spread it over your face, get hubby to lick it off... Sorted

Next time stand up straight with your arms up out to the side take a deep breath in after your last hiccup, count to 10 and swallow 3 times. Third swallow should be hard to get down. Usually works

You girl are spot on. Hiccups are caused by having too much blood in your alcohol system

Blood blockage in the veins leading to the respiratory system is annoying... Hold breath for as long as possible (without passing out), inhale through nose and exhale through mouth in deep breaths.. Repeat for around 15-20 minutes to start with.. It will cause the blockage to become unblocked due to the amount of blood rushing to the blockage...

I know nothing about the human body, medications or procedures, btw

Hiccups are caused by irritation of the Vagus (or wandering) nerve.

Anything you can do to "distract" the nerve can work to stop hiccups.

I had them for two days once, sounds funny but in fact towards the end it was painful.

Things to try include "tickling" the inside of your ear, breath holding etc.

Google Vagus nerve for more info.

That's only the case will long term hiccups.

Short term hiccups can sometimes have no known cause but is usually the diaphragm being irritated by being over stretched

Haverfordwest

This one works every time for me. Standing up and using a bottle of water is easier than a glass of water.

Breathe out fully, pinch your nose and hold it as you take small gulps of water from the bottle. Keep drinking the water like this until you find yourself in desperate need for air, at which point you will stop drinking, take a big breath of air and find the hiccups have stopped.

It sounds like desperate measures, but it really isn't that bad.
