"I'm afraid the "nothing to hide, nothing to fear" argument doesn't work for me. The right to privacy - private communications, thoughts etc is a basic human right. Anyone who doesn't think we need privacy, please feel free to post your bank details, email credentials, change your screen names to your legal names, tell us your national insurance numbers etc. The removal of privacy is a form of control, like a modern version of the panopticon. Orwell's 1984 was meant to be a warning, not a goal. So there. " Totally agree with Mike. Anyone that believes this is solely for the good of the country is being naïve. It will be used for a plethora of tax investigation purposes, health & general insurance, etc etc. It is now all about control and limiting free will, making us believe we need what they have to offer. Does anyone seriously think that social media is unmonitored or that we need cameras on country roads????? Do nothing wrong and we have nothing to fear...rubbish. We all have skeletons, this will only allow them to dig deeper. Mike for Global Leader ![]()

"What are you on about? Bank details? do you think the government give a shit about ordinary peoples bank details or screen names, or whether they look at adult porn??? This is about paedophiles and terrorists and other very unsavoury dangerous people. Get off that human rights bus and get into the real world. I personally want them to have the right to keep us safe anyway they can " I fully agree, as someone who has served this country for over 23 years, I find it odd that people talk about the right to have freedom and privacy, yet forget was is needed to keep this country safe and free. You have human rights because others protect them, whether as part of the forces or as government security. Security isn't free, it comes at cost.

"The problem isn't what they planning to use the power for Now, it's just a small step towards using it for anything they feel like in the future... ![]() Absolutely. Giving the ability to retrospectively persecute people for what are established to be crimes after the fact (whether it is used or not) is the thin end of the wedge. You know who used to keep in depth files on "innocent" people who had nothing to hide? The Stasi and the KGB. And of course, they only used their powers to protect the people.

"Your living in a George Orwell, Joseph Stalin dream world, thin end of what wedge? If they collect all my data now and keep it for the next 50 years, as long as I keep within the law, watch a bit of adult porn, and indulge in a bit of swinging now and again, Tell me? Do you think the government will give a toss?? Your trying to protect the rights of the wrong people. " To quote George "People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf". I whole heartedly agree but you'll never please everyone n one cleverly written news article has people change there opinion For instance it was an outrage to lots that the drone strike took out the cardiff isis guy that they obviously had a lot of Intel on But if he'd of succeeded in a attack over here the outrage would of been why didn't we do something about it when we had the chance

Is that all you use the Internet and your phone for? Really? No banking, no shopping, no social stuff like Facebook and Twitter? No photos? Videos? It's about using a combination of telephone, Internet and other records and metadata to create profiles of innocent citizens. Programs like PRISM et al (not imaginary, and neither for that matter was Stalin) are used for exactly this and are happening right now. We're talking about government programs that know who you are, where you are, who your friends and family are, the contents of your conversations, your travel arrangements, what you buy and where from. Who handles that data? How is it stored? Who has access to it? What is it used for - not just now, but in the future? What happens if idiots come to power and start abusing it (please don't tell me that I'm living in a dream world - the rise of the right in 1930's Germany happened. And if that's not enough, look at the more recent rise of the right in countries like Greece). I have no problem with surveillance of individuals where there is probable cause, or justifiable, legal reasons for it. But blanket capture and storage of data of the entire nation just doesn't sit right with me. An absence of privacy destroys freedom of thought and speech. And with no free speech, any chance of effective democracy goes down the pan.

"Does the government have the money, time, people or any other resources needed to keep check on every person that uses the internet in Britain then ? Just asking like ![]() Yep. In fact our collection mechanisms are more wide ranging than those in the US (according to Mr Snowden). Google Tempora, and watch docs like Citizenfour if you want to know how bad it really is.

"Ok but who reads all this information to see who is up to no good ? Or am I just simplifying things ?" A little. It's too complicated to explain fully here, but Citizenfour is extremely accessible and explains it very well. It's an excellent starting point.

"Seriously, *they* say they're doing it for your own good and the majority of the public believe *them* and let them slowly chip away at your liberties and your right to privacy... But you don't care because they're keeping you safe and anyway these things don't affect you because you've got nothing to hide, right? But what if it is affecting you? This is the government that quietly banned a load of things in the porn industry last year: "Three banned acts were deemed life threatening: strangulation, facesitting and fisting. Other acts banned included spanking beyond a gentle level, full bondage and restraint (in conjunction with a gag and all four limbs restrained) and - bizarrely - female ejaculation." Theresa May frankly scares the crap out of me and it's not too much of a stretch to imagine that she could be the next conservative prime minister. What happens if she decides to do worse - now she's got all our information!? It is the thin end of the wedge, and plenty of people in Germany in the '30s and '40s thought they had nothing to hide or weren't doing anything wrong - until they got carted off to the concentration camps... Or what's happening in Turkey today, for example, all in the interests of 'security' - not to mention all the many cases of mistaken identity where innocent members of the public are being banged up in jail without proper recourse to justice. It's a bad thing getting worse. We can still stop it now, we don't want to get to a point where we wake up one day in a police state and realise that we can't do anything any more because we slowly gave away our freedoms to those that claimed they were protecting us..." ![]()
