Afternoon All, just wondering if you were going on a camping weekend what food would be best to take? Haven't got cooler box at the moment. Thanks Monty

If you haven't anything to keep it cool then avoid any thing which might spoil.

So no dairy and no meat.

Fruit, veg and pasta or rice or tinned stuff.

You can still make a mean pasta or chilli easily

Tins, dry pasta, pasta sauces, rice, or you can buy boil in the bag stuff from camping shops, be carefull tho, some can be expensive.

If you know a squaddie, get him to chuck you some of the "ratpack" main meals, much improved over the last 10 years or so!

Ambient temp stuffed pasta is a good choice (tortellini/ravioli etc) the stuff that doesn't need to be refrigerated. One of those little stir in sauces is just enough for one pack.

Obviously tinned stuff.

Veggies tend to keep when kept cool instead of refrigerated. You can fry/grill/griddle asparagus, sweetcorn and peppers.

If you fancy meet for your first meal freeze it so it defrosts during the first day.

porridge is the perfect camping breakfast.

Contrary to what many believe eggs do not need to be refrigerated and make a great meal.

Veggie chilli or Bolognese comes dried in packets and you just add water and heat, it can be served with pasta or rice.

The briefcase ones are really good. Easy to change the gas, no pipes to mess with and packs up small.

Well, a quick rummage in my "cupboard of wonder" has revealed British Army Ration Pack Menu B, (yes, there were different menus!) plus a box full of assorted main meals (Chicken tikka, sausage n beans, Tuna Rigatoni etc) and puddings (Treacle Sponge, Custard Sponge, Chocolate pudding.... erm, thats a sponge too... they are keen on sponges lol), all boil in the bag, and a few assorted bits n pieces..... so if you get desperate, or want to sample some "squaddie cuisine", mosey on over to the chuck wagon, erm, I mean our tent, and I'm sure we can come to a mutually beneficial arrangement lol!

People have forgotten the most important question

How are you getting to the campsite if you are in a car then the food suggestions are ok.

BUT if you are hiking to the site then the weight you are carrying is very important

There are some nice lightweight boil in the bag meals available having boiled them then the hot water makes your drinks. Fruit, chocolate and sweets are good to eat during the day while hiking but lots of liquid is important.

Either way have a great time and enjoy yourself.

Have you ever tried the "plastic ice cubes" for your drinks ?

They look like they could be fun in more ways than one
