Does anyone on here either work at or knows someone who works at a little private coal mine please. I'm after a job down there as the mine I work at is closing. Please any help would be appreciated.

There are a couple of small mines in operation as well as a few that run on and off as coal prices dictate. If you want to find contacts running small drift mines go onto welshcoalmines and join the forums. it is a more historical interest group but the guys there can point you in the direction of drift mine owners.

Its all going opencast now, best you get in the coal washing plants or get a machine ticket.

you could always try profile stone mining, but the nearest ones are forest of dean or bath ?

UNITY has closed down last year, to the best of my knowledge.

Hope you find something.

i came past Tower Colliery a couple of weeks ago and I can't remember if it was just before or just after Tower on the left hand side was a pit there with Unity on the sign. It was still producing coal but I will bow to your local knowledge. I'll keep trying tho as mining is all I've done since I left school oh and a couple of little driving jobs in the last few months while trying to get back into mining. Thank you for getting back tho much appreciated

Newport

The one they filmed coal house in, was Blaentilley no2, sadly closed, closest one now is Unity in Swansea. But that's in mothballs and maintenance only. What mine do you work in currently.

I am pretty sure there is at least one drift mine still going in the hills between Pontypool and Llanhilleth.

Not getting into politics but think miners union failing to hold a ballot of their member over strike action was called and demanding inflated wages at the time made cheaper foreign coal a better prospect. And before you say , my grandfather died down the pit and my father was a miner....... A very honourable and hard job that was a tradition in my familly.....

One person came out of the miners strike far better than before it. Comrade Arthur.

we weren't asking for more wages we were striking against the pit closure programme nothing to do with wages that's where people get it wrong. Don't believe everything you read in the gutter press.
