Think my head gasket has blown......

Yucky smoke coming from back end. Topping up water and its disappearing, and not coming out anywhere. White smoke from engine.

Haven't driven it far....

So my question is, for those in the know, any chance I can get away with the head just being skimmed and parts repaired instead of scrapping the car?

It's too old to make the repair economic. Some French cars have alloy cylinder heads that can get porus when damanged, skimming wouldn't help if that was the case.

could you try a scrappie for a cylinder head. we used to do that with some of our cars no harm in giving it a go

Kitten, really need someone to look at it, so I know exactly what it wrong. Then I can have a look about if its repairable.

Already looked on E-bay.

Fingers crossed it can be fixed, but knowing my luck, it won't be. Not had it long either

depends on any damage petrol or diesel there's a product out there wich has a money back guarantee as long as your engine/head isent cracked john the firemans near you he has a garage he could help i would but fuel would cost more good luck

the easiest way to know if the head gasket has gone is to run the engine for a few mins then pull out the dip stick. If the oil is a milky brown instead of black then that means water is getting into the oil. Usually the head gasket gone then. Sorry

bound to be some nice lad on here hun that can take a look and advise you. i know a few car sales ppl on here b ut they wouldnt know inside of a car from a train lol. hope u can sort it xx

Where did you buy it from and how long is not long? If a garage and recently you might have a case for a full refund

Ring them first thing in the morning and tell them they have sold you a dud and that you are entitled to either a free repair or a full refund. The car must last a 'reasonable' length of time. Six weeks is not reasonable in anybody's language

I've heard of it and they are meant to fine you a money back guarantee but I've never used it tho

Take the oil cap off and check for water residue. If the repair is not worth cost etc. I can collect it for scrap and pay you. Hope its not that bad though

Might be worth a try..........

Drain out radiator and fill with fresh water............

But two tins of "Wynns Radiator stop leak"

Warm up engine.....

Pour Wynns in slowly into the radiator, with engine running on tickover........

Keep topping up water from watering can.......

Keep doing this for at least 15 minutes......

Cross your fingers..........

I kept a VW Scirrocco running for 2 years with this product.......

No other product comes close to Wynns in my opinion......

Had car from Atlantic Salvage on Barry Docks, if anyone knows it.

Won't have a leg to stand on, as it was sold as seen. Just had log book and receipt from him for the cash

I'm a mechanic...basically it's not a economical repair...what I would do is to add K seal to the expansion tank and give it a drive till it reaches normal temperature....Its a temp fix but should get you over the festive season then scrap it and get another car...

there is no more "sold as seen" anymore, all to do with sale of goods act you still have the legal right not to expect a problem of this severity during the short period of time you've owned the car.

Sorry, but Trading standards were a complete waste of time when I had a problem. Bought a car from a dealer in Southampton to drive back to Wrexham. 10 miles out of Soton the rad weld holding the thing together blew out. Head gasket, cracked head, rad all needed replacing. Trading standards did absolutely nothing.

a friend of mine had an issue with 'sold as seen'. citizen advice told him that that means nothing and entitled to a refund or it fixed by the seller

Sarah, the previous advice on your rights are good and your first action should be to get in touch with Atlantic, explain that you have only had the car 6 weeks and a mechanic has said that you should go back to them with the car for repair and see what they say, Trading Standards is a very protracted affair but Atlantic might not want to allow them to get interested.

Celtic - cheers for advice. I'll ring them and see what they say and go from there.

Been quoted a reasonable £350.

But still don't know if I'm 100% right on what is wrong. No ones looked at it yet. It's still in Morrisons car park!!!!

Try asking the garage to contribute for parts to repair it dont go greedy and they might give you something ! Scrap the car and use the money towards buying another car its not worth repairing.

We used steel seal in an old audi A3 that was just showing signs of head gasket prob. Had to buy that along with high quality coolant and so.it worked.out about £50 in total but it worked a dream but our probs were mot so extensive just losing a bit of water and milk looking oil no smoke from under bonnet .

hi lass . i was called john the fireman once upon a time . I have been in the car game since a child . sold as seen is a funny point . but as you describe them Atlantic salvage . most likely its sold on a trade basis which boils down to no warranty given or implied . but try them you never know . may offer you a good deal on a different car . costs for a successful repair can varied from 200 upward dependant on what's found . I will happily look under the hood and give u an opinion . real steel is a very good product as is k seal but they are not miricle cures to all evils . john xx

Thanks everyone for all the advice and replies.

Just tried to tow it back from supermarket, got to end of my road and the rope snapped. Started it up and couldn't get it up the steep bit. So it's sat on the end of the road, parked nicely!!! Lol

Looks like it's not worth a repair, so going to scrap it

T-reg is it 8 valve or 16 valve engine the 16valves are pigs to work on best part of £400 for rebuild £75 for timming belt £80 For head set shame there goid on fuel but if its 8valve engine easy repair and alot cheaper rebuilt a few of both engines in the past trouble is cars prob worth about £700

Sold as seen dosnt exist and all trading standards will do is look at the company but a car has to be deemed fit for purpose and 6 weeks isn't. You have to give dealer a chance to repair the car and if they don't then go to small claims court. This works if you can be without a car or can afford another. Hope this helps
