Let me know why you think people are so easily offended these days .

Can’t say or do things as someone will take umbrage and have a hissy fit .

Be kind to each other though as everyone is entitled to their opinion however much it differs from yours and we all see things differently

As you know Bubbs, I have no filter. Although with regard to forum threads if I don't have anything good to say I tend to scroll on by. We are all very different with different views and opinions. Some may see me as a snotty miserable biatch and they are entitled to their opinion.. I'm just going to smile and wave 😊

Easier to give a opinion in person maybe? As it's the way it said sometimes typing it can read different got knows. All I know if I got something to say I find it hard to bite my tounge.

I've offended my fair share of folk on here, just for being me. As stated above, I've got no real filters on here, I find it best to say what you think rather than agreeing with the masses just to fit in.

Why?... Because since gen X the world and it's inhabitants have gone limp, everyone act like theyre entitled and cry foul if anyone says anything against them.

I'm not sure if people are more easily offended to be honest.

I think people are more inclined to tell people what they think, where as in the past maybe people of my age and older would just ignore it and crack on.

I don't think it's always a bad thing if I'm honest. Certain things have appear to have gotten better for some groups of people for them not tolerating things like maybe people would have previously.

Like everything there are those that can take things to the n'th degree and will literally be offended by everything on behalf of everyone and then for me that's where they lose the argument when it's gone to that level.

I think you may be Gen X, so not sure if you mean Gen Z?

Gen X were born 1965-1979.

I'm not sure if people are more offended, or whether they are just less inclined to be quiet when something questionable is said.

I pride myself on being reasonably diplomatic. I can usually see thing's from multiple view points, but am equally someone to point out if something unjust is said. Also, if asked in happy to offer guidance or advice in a respectful way.

Life is really fucking hard right now and I think people are less tolerant of bullshit. Just my opinion, appreciate others may feel differently.

Nope definitely X... kids in the 80s teens in the early 90's all before mobile phones became the norm and Internet was dial up.. Then working before the 00s,

You don't get many offended 50yr olds, they're all 40 and younger

OP, you ask a very interesting question and Blessings, you make a very interesting point.

There is a Gabo Mate phrase along the lines of 'it's one thing to say one is triggered, but to be triggered one has to be carrying ones own gunpowder around'. Perhaps a couple of factors are at play simultaneously. A generation of people are now of age who have never not known the Internet. That puts perspective in a different place. And yes, Blessings, you're totally right, life is harder now than it was 20 years ago. I'm old enough to be able to compare and compared to today, money seemed to grow on trees in the 90's.

So today, increasing numbers of people are more financially stressed and perspective is shifted to screens and ones monkey mind interaction with words on screens void of mon verbal queue. So concluding in a question rather than a proposal, if feeling offended is a function of fear, are we less self confident as a society now that perhaps 20 or 30 years ago?

I don't know the first thing about astrology and whether or not that would be a contributory factor, but looking at world events as a proxy for societal confidence, the Iraq wars were a foregone conclusion back in the day. Things don't seem so certain today. I've no answers but what I can say on account of being old, is that love, kindness and shared joy help unite and heal over time. Sending love and kindness to anyone feeling offended. I'll stop rambling now!

Ahh sorry I misunderstood, you meant those after Gen X (Millennials, Gen Z and Gen Alpha), not since GenX started. Apologies.

I think it's all about perspective and how the world has changed. Each generation has had their challenges.

This is a really interesting quote, I'd not heard it before and I kinda agree with it. I think it's fair to say everyone carries around past experiences (some of which may be trauma) that influences the way we view and react to anything and everything. Our differences make us unique but I can also see how for example my trauma can be considered the gun power and a conversation I'm offended by or take personally is the gun which I add my gunpowder to.

It could be unresolved personal trauma or a broader societal trauma that I'm holding gunpowder for which I suppose is why I need to make the decision whether to fire or maybe try and understand why the gun exists.

That got very metaphorical, hope it made sense 🤣🤣

I don't think people are easily offended more than anytime in my life. Online allows people to be more forward, rude etc. It also allows people to respond the same. When we all did things face to face, there was a physical risk of a slap if you didnt read the body language.

More people think they are entitled to have an opinion on how others live their lives without knowing what that person is going/has gone through in their personal life. Some delight in belittling others and it can cause a mob mentality in chat groups etc.

I applaud the people who can change their minds when presented with facts and truths instead of making things up or believing whispers.

Im pretty hard to offend unless its body shaming, bullying or narcissists.

You do you and I'll do me. Unless youre family, friends or fucking me you have no right to have an opinion on my life.

Thanks everyone. Some really interesting answers.

I found this online which made a lot of sense to me.

People get offended easily due to a combination of insecurity, unhealed emotional baggage, and a perceived threat to their identity or beliefs. It is often a self-protective, yet misguided, reaction stemming from low self-esteem, where individuals take things personally to avoid vulnerability. Furthermore, excessive social media consumption and a heightened focus on personal ego increase sensitivity.

I don't do social media at all and as long as the people I care about get me I'm not bothered about how many likes I get or validation from total strangers.

I guess thanks to the interwebs, we are so much more aware of the things we could be offended by.

I get mildly annoyed if someone doubts my ability due to being female, don't give a damn about sexiat jokes though.

In our house we are a "take the Mick out everything, but be kind to everyone" kind of family.

We can make a joke about the darkest of topics, but there is no place for being unkind.

This is such a big question to unpack 🤣🤣🤣 Bubbs mun! Lol!

There's definitely no black or white answer. There's a for and against, most certainly.

Basically....

I do think people hide behind screens and keyboards like a sheild these days and will nit pick at what people say.

I also think that , historically , things have been said and done that never have been called out before , when they should have been

Brilliant point. The older I get the more convinced I am that the only driver of normalisation is repetition. The most bs crazy things can happen but if they happen often enough, society normalises them. So yes, I couldn't agree more that so many things ought to have been called out as not ok historically. Tricky bit is, we can't go back in time. But we can send love and forgiveness to the future, and we can germinate that in our own behaviour on a day to day basis. Sending love to all and well done OP for starting such a hopeful and positive thread x

Social media. It entrenches views and subtly teaches us that opposing views are wrong, leading us to be offended by things we disagree with.

It also provided a degree of anonymity or distance that allows people to react in a more extreme way than they would in person.

I sound like a tin foil hat wearing lunatic here, but on balance I think the world would be a much better place without social media, it's a very dangerous medium.
