Before all death threats come through,i moved to wales to have consistent contact with my lil sets of feet, as im sure we all have that "ex" with an annoying habit.....breathing,but it was what I had to do as a father to continue to have consistent access, other than one day a month which hopefully some might agree, thats no where near enough!! Been here bout six months now and am struggling a little, well alot to build new social network as all I know, met, played etc is/was 150 miles away. Any kind words or suggestions of building networks/friends/regulars in my new found home? Answers on postcards please fabbers!!

What are your general interests in a non-swinging sense? If you have any, find a local club and join.

As an English woman who has lived in Wales for 9 years, I can honestly say I have met so many lovely genuine people, and made great friends, and had such brilliant fun. OOOOOO and I am of course now married to a Welshman, life could not be better!

But, get yourself to socials etc, you will make great friends.

You wont have a problem...they are lovely friendly people..as long as you dont come here thinking will still have an empire and the English are the master race you will get along just fine..

Been here 25 years and never had a problem...you can walk into any rugby club and have a beer when England are playing Wales and join in the good natured banter and you will be expected in a flash...standing there making wanker signs at the locals when England score is not a good idea though!!

Dont believe the myths abut the Welsh..they are smashing people.

They wont talk to you

They hate the English

They will burn your house down

And the wonderful fable about an English person walking into a shop, everyone was speaking in English..but as soon as the English person started to speak the all reverted to Welsh...I have heard that load of bollocks so many times its unreal...its always 'a friend/relative/neighbour/someone they met on holiday/some bloke down the pub..etc etc..

Always makes me laugh when us English say 'oh the welsh us you know'...really? well so does the rest of the Europe and quite a few countries in the rest of the world.. so I wouldnt worry about it too much!!

And..... of course that was asid in jest!

Bit obvious the credit crunch is hitting everybody, cos we used to be full of Welsh when the international came around. Hopefully there'll be an invasion for the Murrayfield weekend.

Time for a good swally!!

If I had a pound for every time I heard this, I'd have done very nicely. Not saying it never happens, but it's become some kind of story that people have adopted and trot out as a lazy anecdote. When you actually question the circumstances, they invariably fall apart.

The reason I mention this is that I've had monoglot Welsh people tell me this story more than once too, so it's not really just an "English" thing.

I've also been told by non-Welsh speakers (who understand that there are parts of Wales where the language is a living, breathing part of everyday life) that they were really grateful when the people they encountered immediately switched to English on realising that they were in the presence who didn't understand.

There's nice people and horrible people everywhere. Sure there's some banter at times, and less savoury things do occasionally happen, but that's idiots being idiots. I know an English friend who was attacked here for being English, but also an English guy living in Wales who was beaten up by squaddies because they thought he was Welsh!.

Find the good people - there's good and bad everywhere. I lived in England and was forever taking stick, so don't think it's all one way!

I sincerely hope you have a great time here. I have English, Brazilian, Polish, Australian and German friends living here. It's a flawed, beautiful, frustrating, stunning place, but the Wales I love extends a warm welcome to others who come here and get stuck in!

I'm sure you'll meet people - there's societies and groups for every interest going. Maybe it's a good time to take up something new - something you've always meant to try or even never considered.

Good luck/pob hwyl
